Well GWS and their hard line has turned to shit. Blind Freddy could see he wasn't happy there and this would happen. I notice in their presser they are concerned for his welfare .Where was the concern 5 months ago. Stupid decision to force him to stay. Gws should have accepted a deal.

God forbid a club is actually holding someone to a contract.

I don't really blame McCarthy in this, though - I blame Colin Young.

I'm trying to find some sympathy for him as he must be going through quite a struggle to be this adamant that he wants to go home. But I mean, indefinite leave for missing his family? Hes been back in Sydney for what, a month? I mean, I hope he sorts it out and goes back and plays some great footy for the Giants this year, then asks to be traded again, but he really hasn't gone about this well, if his intentions really are just to get out of GWS.

Fire sale on GWS players. Excellent condition. Reluctant sale but hey ... no offer refused.

All very well for recipient clubs to be judgmental. He signed an extension so it makes his sudden homesickness look a little odd.

Is Tomlinson walking out too?

Not directed at McCarthy, but the AFL seems to have the most homesick professional sports players on the planet. Every other major code in the world (Soccer, Cricket, Basketball, NFL etc) moving away from home to play professionally is the absolute norm and homesickness never seems to be an issue.

They would've if you'd offered something approaching his value. You didn't.

They where offered a fair deal, now they lose a player and get zilch..What did GWS expect when they traded out a bunch of players but the one player who wanted to leave they played hard ball with and forced him to stay. Piss poor player management and GWS should hang their head in shame.

That's a good way to make him feel good about being involved in the club......

Good for culture too for the club to treat a close friend of many of their employees like trash more then they already have.

Again, if any contracted employee went to their employer and said "I hate it here, i'm going home to be with my family. I know we have a contract, and I can't start working for another employer while this contract exists, but keep paying me while I sit on the couch and surf for a year" they wouldn't be indulged. Why should an employee of the AFL be treated any different?

Which makes his contract extension strange. Sounds to me like his motives have changed. Get your head turned because someone says you can have your cake and eat it too. He had a good year and was suddenly in demand.

Stupid post is stupid.
The contract extension was two years ago. As McCarthy has been saying for 9 months now, he needs to be out of GWS. His player manager told the club that it wasn't because of an offer from Fremantle. Fremantle said the offer wasn't a big one. It had nothing to do with being in demand. Surely this now proves it.

GWS ignored McCarthy's situation, preferring to make an example of the player, and is now one player short on their roster. They didn't manage him properly last year. Any thing they tried this year was too little too late.

This is quite clearly a move coming from Colin Young. Being a Freo supporter I would love to have him at the club but I really don't like the way that he, or if it is his manager are going about it. There is the right way and the wrong way to do things and he signed a two year contract with GWS so they were quite within their rights to reject any offers for him. In saying this it does seem like GWS should have taken the offer from Freo as his market value will drop remarkably this season you would assume. I can really see the AFL or the AFL players association intervening in the next trade period if GWS refuse to do a deal though.

I do feel for McCarthy for being homesick but I also get where GWS are coming from.

Any sensible employer would let a disgruntled employee leave and get the best deal possible for the company. GWS preferred the tough t***ies route and have got burnt.

because if you back out of a contract you can start work somewhere else the next day

yup.

They trade out a bunch of other promising players for a bag of chips yet two first round picks aren't good enough for Mccarthy. Really stupid stuff by GWS.

Mitch Brown wanted to leave due to homesickness a couple of years ago. Saints made a serious move, it was rejected. Backed ourselves to convince him to change his mind.

Now he's strangely happy to stay. Maybe GWS thought they could do the same. It's certainly not up to the receiving club to dictate the terms for a required player at another club.

Spot on. Something must be missing at the AFL in regard to education and conditioning of these guys on what it takes to be a professional sportsperson.

The Carlton four are nowhere in the same league as McCarthy, and they got something of value for Treloar. As others have stated in this thread, maybe Freo should've offered fair value for McCarthy - obviously GWS thought two late first round picks wasn't enough to get it done.

Bloke had one decent year so they were measured in an offer, clearly if this drags out the offer now could be considered more favourable at the time. Freo have been bent over the coals earlier with guys wanting to leave and getting under value - most clubs operate this way, James Aish comes to mind just recently.

And in doing so are going to receive something way way lower than what was offered now
