Is it genuinely that hard to be away from your family for a month?

He would've been with them over the Christmas break, and now doesn't see them for 3 weeks and has a meltdown?

The only two options are

The kids has a mental illness like depression

Or he is soft as butter

Does it matter what the problem is with Cam. The problem is with GWS and who ever is in charge of player management. How GWS got the whole situation so wrong is mind boggling.

Also, how full of shit is this guy?

His Instagram before trade week:
"LOOK HOW HAPPY I AM HANGING OUT AT THIS PUB WITH ALL MY GREAT FRIENDS AT GWS!! I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!!"

Next minute he's having a whinge during trade week and now he's taking a year off to get cuddles from mommy.

Give me a break.

Edit: What a shit moustache as well, jeez, if I was a Freo supporter I'd be thanking my lucky stars we didn't end up with this flog.

Mitch Brown wanted to leave due to homesickness a couple of years ago. Saints made a serious move, it was rejected. Backed ourselves to convince him to change his mind.

Now he's strangely happy to stay. Maybe GWS thought they could do the same. It's certainly not up to the receiving club to dictate the terms for a required player at another club.
Really? I thought it was for opportunity.

Spot on. Something must be missing at the AFL in regard to education and conditioning of these guys on what it takes to be a professional sportsperson.

For all our fascination with trying to copy the NFL, maybe the AFL should organise a junket to Europe next time to see how their soccer players deal with being regularly traded (often across continents). There must be a better way to combat homesickness

They where offered a fair deal, now they lose a player and get zilch..What did GWS expect when they traded out a bunch of players but the one player who wanted to leave they played hard ball with and forced him to stay. Piss poor player management and GWS should hang their head in shame.
Fair deal? Only to Freo supporters was it a fair deal...

Fremantle tried to get a cut price deal. GWS knew they wouldn't be able to get anything close to his worth, esp with 2 years left on his contract.

Like the Mitch Clark deal, they really only have themselves to blame.

A large difference in the US sporting environment is most people shift states to attend college giving something of a buffer before heading out and in some instances the living environment of some players allows an opportunity to make millions and move their families out..... Hey, Lebron James shifted back to Cleveland (not homesick but wanted back) so yeah.

I just don't understand when players do this. I moved across the country away from my family for work at his age. There were times when I missed my family and wanted to talk to them, and for those situations there's this thing called the telephone.....
This may come as a shock to you, but everyone is different.

I thought it was more homesickness than opportunity. Either way, doesn't change the premise that you can change a contracted player's mind - it's a gamble obviously and GWS' gamble didn't pay off so far.

Now we get him for nothing.Well played Freo.

The Carlton four are nowhere in the same league as McCarthy, and they got something of value for Treloar. As others have stated in this thread, maybe Freo should've offered fair value for McCarthy - obviously GWS thought two late first round picks wasn't enough to get it done.

I think our offer was very similiar to the Treloar deal and frankly Treloar has shown alot more than McCarthy who didn't do much at all in the backend of 2015.

They offered 2 second rounders in a shit draft

He's had half a good year in his career.

He could yet be the next Jack Anthony or Andrew McDougall.

If he had 2/3 good years, sure, but the exposed form simply isn't there.

And in doing so are going to receive something way way lower than what was offered now

Benefit of hindsight. If GWS could convince McCarthy to stay on and become a future star for them we'd be making threads in five years time stating they were geniuses for rejecting that offer.

Sounds highly unlikely from most reports that you offered anything approaching the Treloar deal.

Bloke is contracted, deal with it IMO.

Looking forward to GWS not letting him go again this year, with him contracted for 2017 as well.

Indefinite leave and he has gone back to Freo. I assume this means he stops training and is replaced by a Rookie.

He doesnt just slot straight back in to the team when he decides to play again.

So has Buddy left Sydney? Was he replaced by a rookie? He was on indefinite leave as well. Do you even know what it means?

Umm lets not let the facts get in the way. He had his missus and was happy on Perth but tired of being overlooked for selection. Saints offered good money and job security.
Eagles were only going to allow a trade if they got a replacement as they are entitled to with a contracted player.

I honestly think GWS just wanted to send a message to the rest of their list because Cam's best interests were never considered.

Again, if any contracted employee went to their employer and said "I hate it here, i'm going home to be with my family. I know we have a contract, and I can't start working for another employer while this contract exists, but keep paying me while I sit on the couch and surf for a year" they wouldn't be indulged. Why should an employee of the AFL be treated any different?
Incorrect with the real business world situation. The employee just needs to give notice and normally a month at the worst. If the employer doesn't let them go before that month is up they will get paid while sitting around doing nothing (as they don't give a s**t anymore). Then the employee is free to start a job elsewhere.

KPPs (especially young KPFs who have actually shown something) are worth far more than a midfielder. Especially with GWS who has Patton recovering from a knee (and still very young) and need support for Cameron.

Look how much the Dogs are paying Tom Boyd, for example.

It wasn't that long ago McCarthy agreed to a contract extension, seems he didn't have a problem being away from his family then...
