just wondering if anyone can provide some info on how Daniel McConnell is going - used to live close to him and seen him play a fair bit.... also interested in opinions of him from some WCE fans...

as you may already no, he is currently completing year 12. and as a result, he is on a modified training program. he is playing seniors for east perth (one of the strongest WAFL sides) which is a strong effort considering he is still 17, and able to play 2 more years of colts. i'd estimate he's averaging around 10 possesions playing all over the ground and while he hasnt been setting the world alight i think the club would be pleased with the way he is progressing. certainly not out of his depth. i dont expect him to play AFL this year. this is just a development year and the club wont rush him.

i didnt see it but he got best on ground in his first hit out for east perth (a practice match) where he got around 30 touches and a goal - from memory.

I wouldn't be surprised if they gave him a game before the end of the year if his form deserves it.

I would. Worsfold likes to give his talls time to develop, let their bodies mature before they get battered. I imagine he'd also be more likely to give Hansen and Beeck a run ahead of McConnell, even if just to see if they're worth keeping on for another year.

Maybe I am wrong but I don't really see McConnell as a key position player. I think he is more a 190cm utility. We don't seem to mind playing Beau Waters who is about the same age as McConnell. Even then, Worsfold didn't mind playing Staker in his rookie season, did he? In any event I don't see him playing more than 2-3 games but it depends on our injuries and how our season is going.

As for Hansen and Beeck, I think they are both injured.

Agree

I also don't see McConnell as a KPP, not unless he grows a few more centimetres, which, I guess, is quite possible as he's only 17.
Beeck is back playing - he played for the Royals last weekend.

McConnell is in yr 12, (at my sis's school...he even dressed up as a penguin at the fancy-dress river cruise... just a pointless bit of info there) and they have 3 exam periods throughout the year and a lot of homework/study to make sure they do well ect. Exams are in May/June, Mid sept and nov so I don't think he'd play during may/june if he was going to play.

Waters isn't at school as far as I know. He's the same age as me, and I think SA has the same grades as we do, someone told me Butler was finishing yr 12 off this year because he did half of it last year.

D Mac was great in the second intraclub though!

thanks guys - that's pretty much was what I was thinking anyway b4 he went to the club. Needs some time to develop, but is very young and will definitely benefit with having worsfold as a coach. by the by - I have great respect for your club - even though I am a bomber - I reckon you guys don't get enough recognition - great club, with a super coach and genuine superstars !! if only you were in Victoria !! hehe !! :D

No he is not a rake, by comparison:

McConnell 190 cm 83 kg
Hunter 190 cm 81 kg
Embley 190 cm 88 kg

Good size, he will put some more weight on and in time, and he will be similar to Embley

I know waters has finished school, i dunno bout butler.

But the eagles do tend to let the guys still in school finish the school year before playing them in the seniors. But by the sounds of it hes playing well at east perth, so he'll probly play the year out there and then next year they'll think about the senior team
Hes at churchlands isnt he?? I guy i work with is in year 12 there, but he didnt know who he was

You sure that the correct info? If so he would be bigger than Hunter? Which I just cant imagine. Im sure I saw him once and immediatly tagged him as a project that we wouldnt see for a least 2 years?

Yes I double checked. I quote two additional sources than the AFL 2004 Offical stats book.

1. The Eagle Eye 190 cm and 83 kg.

2. The AFL draft camp profile on him 190 cm and 83 kg.

Would suggest that the figures are true.
