Where does everyone see you Matty playing?

HF: Shane Edwards Tyrone Vickery Chris Knights
F: Matthew McDonough Jack Riewoldt Jake King

???
Both Matty & O'Hanlon 2 years away from being Regular Richmond Players they will be 21/22 and would have 3 years of preseaons work in them

HF: Shane Edwards - Tyrone Vickery - Brett O'Hanlon
F: Matt McDonough - Jack Riewoldt - Liam McBean

Wouldn't mind seeing McDonough at the feet of Riewoldt!

I agree with STW that King might have retired by the time McDonough is ready for 22 games of AFL. Might be Arnott parked in the other pocket by then

Man, in a couple of years there are going to be some tough decisions having to be made. All these players coming to their peak, not to mention this years and next years draftees who may surprise like Vlas this year, and limited spots.

Really the only one I can see as a definite retirement who is a regular is Tuck. Newman and King may still be around if they are playing good footy. Who knows?

Don't write off Helbig yet either. He's clearly a class above VFL. If he were actually played in the midfield at AFL level he may surprise. Probably some way off that happening, which is not a bad thing at all.

Honestly, he hasn't shown ths at VFL at a consistent level..........maybe the odd good game. McDonough has shown this level consistently for about 8 weeks now.

As I said in my post I really like helbig and poor kid hasn't caught a break injury wise with his feet etc but McDonough is flying and easily ahead at this stage.

Whats with all the Mc's? McBean, McGuane, McDonut, might aswell call us McRichmond!

Helbig plays in the back pocket for Richmond to build up the defensive side of his game you would think.

So pumped to see this kid play AFL. Sounds like he is killing the VFL.

How good is it? So many young players dominating VFL - McBean, Arnott, Helbig, McDonough, Darrou all killing it and all so young. Wouldn't have expected them to be doing so well at VFL level for another two years.

What's his defensive pressure like? FJ said last year that is an area he might need to work on. If he is decent in this area, probably get a game up forward either in the pocket or half forward and get some stints running through the middle at stages.

Given he is a clever user of the ball, would be a handy option as a sub (starting to get a few of those!)

Must be pretty good these days, his tackling game has been praised by Clarke.

Why on earth does Nahas start ahead of him?

Probably because we wouldn't play a first gamer in finals (or a two gamer) and if we need cover for King/Edwards/White during the finals then we will be bringing Nahas in, so we need him to play tomorrow.

Looks the goods so far, especially for a later pick. He doesn't need to be flogged in the seniors yet like we have with so many youngsters in the past. Let him and Mcbean both work on their games and body's over the pre-season and see if they can force there way into the 22 next year. Terrific problem to have :thumbsu:

Really really disappointed in the coaching panel skipping over the emergencies for Nahas. Shows a lack of faith in the kids which is such a shame when you consider the efforts of Arnott, Vlastuin and Ellis this year especially compared to Nahas' 5 non performances at senior level. Really damaging to a kids a confidence, its more like saying your close but i dont trust you.

I have never doubted Hardwick as a coach before, despite everybody's complaints about his match day performance but this is making me start to doubt him. Its just a shocking decision.

I can understand that everyone is excited by the new junior in McDonough, but this is plain rubbish.

Nahas has been playing better than McDonough at VFL level. That's why he was chosen. Nothing about trust or faith. I'd be disappointed in Hardwick if he chose the worse performing player.

Also, Nahas is the next in line after Edwards. He is the logical replacement. McDonough has been dominating in the VFL because of his exploits in the midfield, not in the forward line. If he was to play tomorrow, we'd be silly to make him a first choice midfielder, as he has been playing at VFL. Nahas will be far more beneficial in Edwards position than McDonough will be.

Why pick him as an emergency then and overlook him for a guy you don't have down? Obviously they knew shed hamstring was tight so put Nahas as an emergency and don't overlook a kid who is named as an emergency. Not to mention Nahas has been playing half back? Makes it a bit null and void to say McDonough hasn't been playing forward.

From my own personal experience when i was 18 i was playing seniors at HF/CHF and playing well, got injured 2 weeks before finals and got named Emergency for our prelim. Our CHF went down that week and i expected to come up, instead the coach picked a back pocket from the twos who had been in and out of the side all year and put our best player who was also injured to CHF. I was shattered and lost faith in the coach, who apologised for not playing me at the b&f but was worried about my lack of experience.

It just reeks of a lack of faith, make no mistake had Nahas been named an Emergency i'd be thinking it was the wrong move by the selection committee but at least i would understand it but reaching outside your selected emergencies is a massive mistake IMO.

Just like Astbury and Griffiths. Both were Forwards in their junior days and I've rarely seen them up there when they get AFL gigs. Obviously a teaching tactic by the development team and Dimma.

Nahas is a good VFL player but fails to deliver at AFL standard, by your logic he's not the logical replacement either as Nahas has been playing off half-back for Coburg not up front... We can afford to see what this kid can do and we should do it before the end of the year.
