MCG or Dome?

Assuming results go to plan, there'll be two finals in Melbourne first week.

Not sure how the new agreement works. Will both games be played at the MCG or will TD get one as well?

Reason i ask is that it'll be pretty rough if we have to play Melbourne on their ground. If we are destined to play Melbourne at the G, what incentive have we got to win this weekend?

Surely you've got to reward the team that finishes higher.

If the 1997 finals series taught us anything, it was that this is not the case.

I forsee us playing Melbourne at the G in our future. At least they play at the same time we do next weekend.

Have Geelong got any plans to build another stand and get the ground up to say 30,000. And if so, would you then ask the AFL for a real "home" final if eligible.

Mind you, losing the standing room area would be a real loss.

Don't know, but if ground capacity is the AFL's reason for denying us finals and maximising crowds is their main motivation, surely all finals should be played at the MCG.

Increasing the ground to accommodate more people still won't get us a home final at Skilled because it's a home state final you earn. That's why it's crap when WA teams, SA teams and Bris get a home state final and real home ground advantage.

Go CATS!!

yeah I agree with what you are saying here phat but we can't let what ground we play at bother us imo. I mean, if we can't beat melb at the mcg, where the premiership is decided, well then we don't deserve to progress into the second week. simple as that.

Of course mate, just seems to be totally at odds with Andy D's constant bleating recently about how equality, fairness and the integrity of the game are paramount.

I have no idea if one will be played (assuming kangas and geelong finish 5-6 of course) at the dome or not.

But if they did, surely the kangas, who finished higher and have the dome as their melb home ground get preference.

If they build anything else I think the standing room would stay and they would rebuild a few of the older stands around the ground. The one next to the Hickey springs to mind

Logically, yes, but i dare say the reason North will be at the dome will be purely economic.

Spot on. My sentiments exactly. Geelong are the only team in the AFL that if eligible still has to play a 'home' final AWAY. Go figure. Would love to see SS upgraded to about 30 - 35K and play finals down here. What do your reckon Brian/Frank??

Yeah.

The only way I can see us getting the dome would be if drew the winner of port/freo and kangas got the dees. Don't know if that's possible, if it is it makes the thread a moot point anyway I guess.

Wouldn't the most likely scenario be Kangas hosting at the G (1st elimination final) and Geelong at the Dome (2nd elimination final) based on AFL past scheduling?

From afl.com - the league is no longer required to schedule a game at the Dome, and as part of the new MCG deal, promised the MCC more finals overall, including weeks one and two.

Would help the AFL with its 'banking system' to have two elimination finals at the MCG this year, on the chance that interstate teams finish 1, 2, 5 and 6 next year.

Prepare for a 'home' final against the Demons at the MCG, boys.

The original agreement between the AFL and the Telstra Dome stated that a 2nd Victorian Final in Week 1 will be played at the Docklands. That contract no longer exists.

However, the AFL can still schedule games there if they want to.

I would think that if Geelong happen to play Melbourne first week, it would be at the MCG. But if we play Fremantle in Melbourne, it might be at the Telstra Dome.

The new agreement should effectively mean that there will be almost no finals at TD anymore...and YAY for it.
Anytime a Victorian team has a home final, it will be played at the MCG to help the MCC's banking system, at least that's what I would assume.
There might be a chance for the odd final to be played at TD, but I think that would only happen if there were 3 or 4 Victorian teams finishing, in any of the following positions;1,2,5,6.

I'm wrapped...I love the MCG, I don't care who's home ground it is, and anything to have more games/finals played there is a good thing, IMO.

Since 97 , the system has changed , we 2 played Roos 7 and lost, we then lost our ranking and went to Crow land
2
KP could have a capacity 40,000 and we still would not get a final. Too many contracts with too many powerbrokers
3
Id say who ever plays the non Vic side will play at the Dome
