This is probably the first time this idea could be suggested because the Etihad Stadium contract has been torn up. I think there were a few clauses in that contract that guaranteed them (by law) that other stadiums won't be roofed or expanded.

With the imminent closure of Hazelwood, they could replace the lights on the towers with turbine blades and the roof could be covered in solar panels. They could also have water catchment initiatives for when it rains, which such a coverage area for collection, it could make the desal plant even more redundant.

Sure, build a roof. As long as when it's retracted, (99% of the time) it retracts over whats there. Somehow being totally or almost unseen when open. A closing trigger would be a drenching forecast, not light showers.

Not sure of the Etihad roof closing policy. Hadn't Brad demanded it be closed during every north game to give his side an advantage? Well the G's policy would be far different. Closing only during extreme weather. Cricket may require a different approach but frankly, I couldn't give 2 shits about it.

The MCC is its own organisation. How would a contract with the AFL effect or even guarantee that?
