Building a roof over the G is a complete waste of money. What they should do instead is build a closed roof boutique stadium above the G, therefore acting as both a roof and a new stadium for when they knock down Etihad. The rail can then be sunk underneath both the G and new sky stadium consolidating both stadiums in one floor plan. A much wiser use of tax payers dollars.

And build the whole thing on wheels so when an interstate team deserves a home grand final Gil can simply drive the stadium there.

That would mean roads across the country need to be widened, making my proposal untenable. Costs would just balloon out.
Hang on.... new stadium - travel interstate --- balloon?
I think you may be onto something!

I'm on board. Imagine 70,000 Tiger ferals going apeshit at the umpires at a closed roof mcg

Would be delicious

Put a roof on made up of LED lights on the ground-side and set them to sky blue to resemble the sky. They could even advertise up there or mimic the sky and have certain lights switch to white to resemble clouds

:drunk:
Not just LED's.

Fill the sky with Dave Warner signature OLED's so it becomes one electronic big scoreboard.

A giant Nescafe tin will do it....

The beauty of this design is when we need to knock it down we simply half fill the G with water & then chuck in a shitload of aluminium foil & caustic soda.

Job done!

World class in the 70's?
Apart from the Ponsford (that only had 2 rows of seats on the bottom deck of the public section - the rest was standing) the other stands were at least 20 years old. Northern 1950's, Southern Stand 1930's. MCC Members 1920's. No ramps to the top and had was like climbing Everest to reach the top.
Most of the outer was standing room and all the seats were timber benches (look out in a final if you got a fat arse next to you) and no corporate facilities (not that I get to do Corporate very often).
The internal walkways were narrow and a crush always developed after a game.
The ground itself was like a bog in the middle of winter and that often carried into the finals.
Was certainly iconic but not World Class in the 70's.

As for looking dated these days? Are you serious? The stands there now were opened in 1992 & 2006 and several internal renovations have been carried out in the Southern in recent years.

90s then. I'm saying it's nowhere near the best in the world. It does not compare to the top stadiums in Europe and China.

This is what a 21st century stadium looks like.

Are we following the example of Minnesota? Obsessed with building a roofed stadium - they did.

The Twins Dome!

Aha - they've already knocked it down and returned outdoors because the roof stifled the atmosphere.
Lolwut.... Already knocked it down? According to the link you've posted the roof was there since 1982 before the whole stadium was demolished in 2014. Hardly a case of 'already knocked it down' And the Vikings new stadium has a fixed roof anyway, on the same location as the old stadium.

Why in the world does the MCG need a roof? Do we want Etihad 2.0?

The players hate Etihad because the turf grows so slowly and is in shit condition.
The coaches hate Etihad because players get injuries all the time
The fans hate Etihad because it is so f***ing freezing even when it's 26*C outside, it feels more like 26*F.

Yes and no-one wants the MCG to look like a bloody Coffee Tin.

The MCG doesn't need a roof (period)

One of the most stupidest ideas ever.

People that want the MCG to have a roof also want a night grand final and Trump to be president.

The worst kind of people!
Orange tans for all

Like I said, the Northern Stand was completed in 2006 to bring the MCG into line.
21st century stadiums might look sexy, but history knocks it out every time.
And the G has about 180 years worth of it.
It's what happens on the field that is important, not that you have free wi-fi at a stadium.
Iconic is more important than looks.
Besides, this is not ugly.

I don't think this would be possible. Just imagine how big a spoon you'd need to pry the roof open.
