and no we don't have to take the overseas ideas of shuffling round the grand final like they do in the US.
we can always do as we want to and keep it to one place and maybe that is unique to a few countries but it
also says that we don't pander to individual clubs either.

So no Sydney don't have first right to a home Grand Final... Nor WA or Free.. Or even those imbeciles Adelaide, etc... lol.

these things are so easy...
Excuse me? Well done champ bloody good comment.

NSW & Qld have 4 AFL clubs.

WA & SA have 4, Tas nil.

Whats a footy state then?, & whats not?
What's a footy state?, being a Collingwood supporter thought you'd know. I'll explain. A footy state is a state where Australian Football is traditionally the most popular spectator sport and most would label them as Vic, WA, SA and Tas add NT.

Sure there are 4 clubs north of the Murray but only 1 has a big supporter base - Brisbane used to when they were dominating but once they dropped off so did the attendances. I'd argue the same would be for Sydney once and if they drop off - the bandwagon will be emptied. Only few are rusted on like us from the "footy states" - and you'd argue they're expats from Vic who used to support South and Fitzroy. The bulk of those supporters only support those teams when they're going well - it's not an interest in the game so much.

For example, The storm have a successful NRL team but you wouldn't say that the public has a thirst for rugby league in traditional footy states - it's good we have a team full of Queenslanders, NSWelshman and kiwis representing Victoria and doing well but meh - not much interest for the game or the league itself. This would be the mindset of the majority of "supporters" of those teams North of the Murray. "We have a team in their game and if we can beat them then sweet, if we lose I'm turning off".

All that leads back to the thread discussion and in part answers the questions as to why the GF is staying.

  • We all know where the bulk of the market is.
  • Not mentioned above it's obvious that the MCC had an influence in this decision.

The explanation elsewhere in this thread, and no
I wont do either.
You won't do what? Or is that it won't do?

Either way there's the reality and what you want to be the reality, so if you don't want to move on then don't. No skin off my nose or anyone else's.

Amateur move by an amateur competition. Aside from the obvious inequities, who the hell knows what is going to happen over 40 years? The AFL already got into an unsustainable position by doing this sort of a deal for home finals and had to find a way out.

And the notion that you need a 100,000+ seat ground for the GF is preposterous. The NFL is a vastly bigger spectacle and commercial enterprise than the AFL and they routinely hold superbowls in stadiums with less than 70,000 capacity.

I'm not sure what gives the AFL, supposedly a National Competition, the right to strike a deal with the Victorian Government that so obviously disadvantages non-Victorian clubs and States. In the long term, AFL is in a battle with other codes, and this is the kind of narrow-minded thinking that gives a free kick to the competition.

I wish people would stop comparing it to NFL. That's a completely different beast. How many people get into the Superbowl for less than $400 through their membership? In the AFL it's about 80k. Can you get into NFL games during the year for $30? We still have a game for the people, they don't.

That's a nice fact you've pulled out of your arse there. The NFLs minimum required capacity for Superbowls is 70k - see https://www.si.com/nfl/audibles/2014/06/09/super-bowl-2018-requirements-minnesota-vikings

The median of all Super Bowl attendances ever is approximately 74k. Do you know what the capacity of the MCG is, bar the MCC section?
A bit under 78k
https://www.mcc.org.au/_/media/files/mcc/my-mcc-membership/mcc032-membership-flyer-2017_hr.pdf?la=en (see "The MCC Reserve has a capacity of more than 22,000").
Get close to those marks and we can talk.

I hope those arguing that the GF be moved around would also support a GF in Geelong.
Likewise I guess the interstaters will be insisting the grand final be played at Etihad if they are the lower ranked team and have to play one of the Etihad tenants in the granny.

Somehow I think they won't be so strident about oval size and home ground advantage all of a sudden. More like want a better chance of getting a ticket at the bigger ground.

It really would not have been hard for one of the other state governments to have approached the afl and said "we want to build a huge stadium for the future but to make the $ work we need you to let us host the granny every now and then". Hell if it was in Sydney or Brisbane probably the afl would have been all over it like a rash. Remember their aim is to cripple the rugby codes and especially soccer. The long game is afl dominant over the whole country.

Instead, political machinations in Sydney see the only other big stadium in the country get half torn down and WA/SA lack any sense of vision (and in the case of WA, money) and instead build little boutique stadiums.

I don't hear many geelong fans demanding the granny be at kp, especially when half the seats would go to opposition supporters.

If non victorian forces suggested a non MCG grand final and Gil even listened rather than laughed I bet they couldn't believe their luck.

Meanwhile Gil lusts after a night grand final but it appears beyond his capability to deliver even that 'small' change.

This discussion is such a non event its not funny
