Ashley McIntosh has been named to return from injury for Sunday's clash with the Swans at the SCG. Youngster Kasey Green
is also in line for his first game for 2001.
McIntosh has missed several weeks with a thigh injury, and the fact that he
has been named on the bench with three still to be omitted from the team
indicates that he may not in fact make the trip to Sydney. Eagles coach Ken
Judge indicated earlier in the week that McIntosh would probably play in the
WAFL before returning to full duties.
For Green, it is a chance to extend on the six games he played in his debut
year in 2000.
The Eagles biggest problem remains their lack of scoring power. They have
averaged just 76 points per game this year, which is simply not enough.
Troy Wilson can probably be relied on to kick three or four, and Phil Matera at
least a couple, but they need some more contributors. Rookie Daniel Kerr, who
has been one of the Eagles most consistent performers this year, has been
named in the forward line in an attempt to find another goal scoring option. Kerr
has kicked just four goals this year, but his commitment to the ball and
willingness to have a go makes it a worthy experiment.
Most eyes will be on the midfield duel between Ben Cousins and the Swans
Brownlow Medallist Paul Kelly. Kelly has been restricted by injury this year,
and Cousins, with youth on his side, should be able to come out on top in that
battle. Unfortunately, all too often this year Cousins has won the battle but the
Eagles have lost the war.
Ken Judge will be one person hoping for a match-winning performance from
Cousins, or indeed form anyone. A speculation grows that his position as
coach won't survive much past the end of the season, Judge needs some wins
more than anything.
The Record: West Coast have played Sydney 23 times. The Swans are one of
just four teams with a better than 50% record against the Eagles, having won
12 times. In Round Two this year, Sydney held off a fast finishing Eagles by 15
points.
