MCMANAMAN SET FOR MAN CITY SWITCH
Friday 29th August 2003

Steve McManaman is set to become a Manchester City player this weekend after Real Madrid released him from the remainder of his contract.
The former England midfielder, who had a year left on his Bernabeu deal, will sign a two-year contract with City if he passes a medical.

The 31-year-old will become Kevin Keegan's second signing in little more than 24 hours following the arrival of £2.5million Claudio Reyna from Sunderland.

City chairman John Wardle said: "We are delighted with the move for Steve as this shows our intent to continue to drive forward.

"By bringing in players of the calibre of McManaman and Claudio Reyna, whose signing we completed today, we are showing a real ambition to progress."

McManaman will link up with his long-time friend and former Liverpool team-mate Robbie Fowler at the City of Manchester Stadium.

In other transfers John Alieu Carew has gone from Valencia to Roma and Stephane Dalmat is close to signing on loan with Boro. Makelele is just awaiying a medical at Chelsea

Lucky I didn't use my "I'm glad we got Reyna 'cause at least that means we won't get stuck with McMan" quote yesterday. :D

I think we had the debate a few months ago, I'll sit on the fence on this signing, my big concern is that it will block the progress of Wright-Phillips who is having a great start to the season.

As it stands:

Out - Jensen, Schmeichel, Haaland, Murphy, Whitley, Nash, Horlock, Ritchie, Goater, Foe (RIP), Bernarbia, Howey, Mettomo, Vuouso (on loan), Shuker (on loan) - £2.15 million (approx)

In - Sinclair, Bosvelt, Sibierksi, Reyna, Tarnat, McManaman, Seaman - £5.7 million (approx)

Definately a stronger squad, and without spending a heap. I'm certainly happy with the off-season, 3 points against the Arse and my optimism levels will be sky high. :D

Not a 100% sure about these signings. Both have plenty of talent no doubt & as long as they're fit they should prove useful.

I too worry how this affects the likes of Barton & Wright-Phillips, time will tell.

Don't worry about Wright-Phillips and Barton, because with are going to have a hetic scedule with European football there will be constant rotations around the midfield and both players will get there fair go.

It will be also be good for both these up and coming stars to play with the quality of McManaman and Renya, to futher develop there own games.

Considering Keegan known pleasure in spending money I too was surpirsed at the amount he outlayed, especially considering that we are in Europe.

With the increase in seating at The City of Manchester Stadium (15,000 increase) the coffers will definitely be much stronger for some buying in January.
