McVeigh - Next EFC Captain?

Probably depends on how long Lloyd carries on for.

If not him, I would think in two or three years time Stanton will more than likely be considerred in the top bracket of mid's and be ready.

Houli would be another who has an opportunity over the next few years to step up and as a 21 / 22 yo take the leadership.

You would have to think that Watson has one foot in the door given that he is the youngest in the leadership group.

I'd agree with that.

By the time Lloydy's moving on from the position, Watson will be around that prime 26-27 age and, if he develops as I expect, he'll probably be playing fairly decent football.

Well he could captain a premiership, possibly.
forgive me i was still quite young back in 1990
cant really remember many captains before Bomber thompson
lloyd maybe 3 years left as skipper
then 1 as playing no longer skipper to assist jobe with the role.

:D All good mate, the 1990 grand final is one of my earliest football memories...

In a house full of "step-relo's", whom I hated. Who all supported Collingwood...

Man it was shattering...

But hey, the heart is still with this great club. Always will be.

I'm not a big fan of McVeigh as the captain, although if Lloyd wasn't around he may well be the best choice. In terms of younger players, I don't see Monfries as being a captain, not sure what he has done for everyone to think he could be... Also, Stanton is too much of a seagull (hopefully this will change this season).

I like the idea of Watson as I think that he has the potential to be a great director of the midfield, and if he can do that, then why not the entire side.

I think it's his unwavering courage and commitment that have people touting him as captaincy material.

He probably hasn't yet delivered on the potential that he showed in his first twenty odd games, but his courage and commitment couldn't be questioned.

No oe has mentioned Hille. I guess we can assume he has done his dash after filling in as captain a couple of years back.

that's a big call. Maybe he should truly cement himself in the 22 first ?

Well i didn't mean next week ... By the time the #18 is passed on i would be very very surprised if J Nash is not in the first 22. And at that point of his career would make a great captain.

Jobe is a very popular choice and from memory Jobe finished last year in the two's ... However i understand why people would choice him because his talent is undeniable. ;)

Glad you agree.
Winders for Captain when Lloydy retires.

I mentioned this in a different thread yesterday, but its more on this topic:

I hadn't really heard Jobe talk before Saturday night, but was very impressed with his half time chat on channel 10. He was confident, well spoken, knowledgeable & showed a lot more personality than our current skipper. He can definitely tick the media box on the future captain application form.

Interesting, I would think that Ryder would be a more realistic option than Monfries. I mean Monfries shows flashes of brilliance but is far too inconsistent for my liking. When he actually keeps his intensity and hunger for the football for 3-4 quarters, then he'll get my nod (If there isn't already players overtaking him for the captaincy position)

Ryder seems like a natural born leader, not so much verbal, but in his actions and how he goes about his Football week in week out.
He sets the example that most Footballers should aspire.

My thought on the captaincy? if Winderlich keeps improving like he did last year then i can't see why he shouldn't get it. His gut running is phenomonal, he's a good kick on most occasions and leads by example.
People may not agree with me, prefering Stanton or players like that but i really believe that Winderlich can put a strong case forward if he continues to play like he did all last season.

Depends when they are willing to let Lloyd relinquish the captaincy. If it happens soon then McVeigh for me, if it happens in 3-4 years then get a younger bloke. Monfries perhaps. I dont think Ryder is captaincy material.

IMHO, McVeigh would be a better captain than Lloyd right now. Can anyone name the other great FF captains of recent times?? McVeigh's really matured and I love his intensity and hardness, and is good to have your skipper in the thick of it. I'd be thrilled if McVeigh was given a crack in the next year or two.

Ryder has shown very little leadership skills IMO, and his intensity just isn't there to be the main man. He's very young, a gun and I love him, but he's a long way from captain material.

I'd have to say Jobe after that. A lot to like about him as a footballer, a person and a leader.

Lloyd is not making any impact as captain with "on field performances". When chips are down he is not saying "follow the leader" guys and seting an example. (It's hard to do that playing at full forward).

However, I think McVeigh and to a lesser extent Hille are the ones who have been sparking our come backs in games this year and most of last year.

So start of next year; McVeigh to Captain and Hille as Vice-Captain. (Wouldn't mind someone young either, however they have to be someone who sets the example and displays courage every single time they run out).
