If the AFL is going to pay a substantial amount of money for an act to appear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with people expecting a quality performance from that act.

And that's essentially what this discussion boils down to.
So everyone's sooking about what the AFL spends their money on ?...or are they sooking about what the AFL spends THEIR money on ??

Just be thankful they didn't follow the NRL's lead and got ( UGH ) ESKIMO JOE...who i think played LAST years GF....and the one before that....and the one..

Eskimo Joe are a good band, currently much better than Meatloaf

Rumored to be pulling out due to the weather. Was just reported on Channel 10.

Bloody hell. Toughen up mate. We've paid big bucks for you to come.

Having said that I can't wait to find out what Plan B is if he doesn't go on.
God i wish plan B was put in place.

Just searched through some live performances on youtube, and it appears that Meatloaf has been ordinary live for a long time. All of his 2010/2011 performances were as bad as yesterday. Back in 1998, you can see signs of his voice going, and even in 1987 when he was only 40, he improvised some of his notes.

Seems that he has never been a studio perfect live performer vocally and that the music and the performance overcomes that. Just goes to show how brilliantly engineered the Bat Out of Hell album was. There were clips of a live performance at the time of release but they didn't really do video clips back then so that live performance was probably the engineered studio piece because it was flawless and powerful.

I'm feeling really sorry for the guy because this is his bread and butter. I'm not sure whether I feel sorry for the backups and the band as they know he has lost it, but are they supporting him or using him for a paycheck?

I could have told you that. I saw him last time he was here, he was shithouse and there were people streaming out mid way through. I sent an email to the promoter saying we should all be refunded.

To think he's back. All those saying he will be better in his concert when he knows the venue, set up, arrangement etc. Wrong. I've seen nothing to suggest that is true. Pity, because I saw him do a 25 minute version of Paradise by the Dashboard Light which inlcuded costume changes at the Old Lion back in the day, it has alway stayed with me. Altho' it could be argued he's always been a little upstaged by his strong female singer.

Yesterday's performance just reminded me of this clip.

Maybe he just needed Gary Busey there to really fire up.

Oh i'm sorry...i hadn't heard that Eskimo Joe had the 5th highest selling album of all time......

Do you understand the word "currently"?

And if you don't want to discuss the pre-match, why are you in the thread which exists solely to discuss the pre-match?

Absolutely the AFL should be accountable for the money it spends.

It is both the AFL's money and the fans' money we are talking about, as the AFL pockets the takings from the Grand Final.

If the AFL wants to (purportedly) spend $500,000 on a musical act for the Grand Final, the fans have every right to expect it to be money well spent.

And yesterday it wasn't.

Now that's a different issue, that comes down to musical taste. When it comes to taste it wouldn't matter who performed, you wouldn't make everyone happy.

The issue is the quality of the performance on the day. Despite Loaf's enormous past success, his performance was sub-par. No question about it.

the sad thing about the whole thing that it was so obvious that his performance was gonna be shit, seriously what were they thinking?

Eskimo Joe was our pre-match entertainment for the Geelong vs Hawthorn QF, they performed 3 songs pre-game and then their new song at halftime IIRC.

NRL gets them for their GF and only get 1 son, their new one which most wouldn't know.

That's without mentioning they got Kelly Clarkson all the way out here for 1 song and that too was her new song which hardly anyone would have known. She always sings live though and sings well, so that was a plus.

Meat was pretty funny yesterday, but when you consider he getting >$300k for that 12 min performance, the AFL has to have rocks in their head not to know that he was likely to perform like that.

Surely the first qualification for a Grand Final entertainer is that they can still sing!

As much as I like(d) a re-run of INXS, Noiseworks, Barnesy, Chisel, Farnham....they are DONE, and it's time to put them out to pasture.

As others have said, Paul Kelly would be sensational if he was singing a 4 song set of Leaps and Bounds, To Her Door, Dumb Things, How To Make Gravy. (Plus he loves AFL, lives in Melbourne, and is a Crows supporter!)

AFL - make Paul Kelly an offer for 2012 GF now, before he plans his tours for next year.

If the AFL want to move away from baby-boomer rock, some other options could be You Am I, Tex Perkins/Cruel Sea, Something For Kate. The Presets would be a bit different, but would put on a great live show.

Maybe the AFL could run a poll on their website until April for example asking who people want to see perform Grand FInal Day? Then the top 5 acts nominated, would form the basis for their search for Grand Final entertainment?

Come on everybody, I want The Loaf back every year.

Haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Absolute gold. :D:thumbsu:

Well now that we know what we are going to get, it would be funny.

We should get William Hung out here and the two of them can do 'She Bangs' as a duet.
