I'm guessing the rest of you saw that moment towards Bat Out of Hell where he was singing, but no sound came through. Was that lip-syncing? Or a temporary microphone issue? It just seems to me that if they had decided to lip-sync, they would have chosen a better recording.

Im in the UK, and we saw it.

...And also for those elsewhere.... on the live feed when 10 must have gone to the break.... we heard anthony hudson say.... ".... Demetrio (I can't spell it) should lose his job over that".... before they muted the mic's again.
That's awesome, Demetriou should lose his job anyway. He's so out of touch.

Haha, damn wish we had heard that.

Why cant the AFL get a recent band or musician instead of the oldies?

Was it true that Pink offered to perform in the replay last year for 200k and was knocked back?
Outstanding decision if so. Lionel became legend as a result.

Issue for me is they go for rock type performers. It's not the right choice imo. Need someone who can sing, someone who gets the fans out of the chairs and just creates a fairly relaxing and fun atmosphere. Lionel did that perfectly.

Agree on the first point, you'd have thought the AFL could have investigated in advance who can carry a performance live and who can't.

I disagree on the other point though, I think the problem is that his voice is shot. It happens to singers his age.

I went to see Chicago this time last year and the bloke in the band who sings the ballads Peter Cetera used to sing (Jason Scheff) had exactly the same problem (although he is quite a bit younger than Loaf). His voice sounded shot too.

I went to Countdown 2, and Graham Bonnet's voice was shot. Really struggled to hit his notes .... BUT he was in tune even if he was cracking on the higher or longer notes. If Meatloaf's voice cracked and he went off on the high notes or just sounded croaky or different, all good. He seems to have lost the tempo and tune of his own songs though.

Perhaps it is health and he made a conscious decision not to try to sing as he used to so went for this forceful spoken word type singing. I'm just saying, he changed everything and probably sounded worse in doing so.

He does have softer parts of his songs, whereby he didn't need to yell his lyrics out of tune, but nothing gelled with anything.

I'm not a critic usually. I too own Meatloaf albums and regularly listen to his stuff. Someone is giving him bad advice though OR he changed it up too much being in a huge stadium, instead of a smaller venue.

Record profits, biggest league in Australia, massive viewership and that is the shit the AFL serves up. Why don't they go after big names that aren't 80 years old and suck ass.
They can certainly go after the older singers, they just need to pick the ones who can still sing - they do exist, as we found with Lionel last year. I don't see the point of having an older singer if his/her voice is gone and they can't hit the notes they used to be able to. It's cringeworthy (and sad) hearing them trying to compensate, as we just found out with Loaf.

Correct. That's why you would never book Jimmy Barnes for such a gig either. Some guys age better than others of course, John Farnham is declining too, but he could still easily nail a 15 minute hit-parade. The guys who yell are the ones who age the worst.

All they need is Mike Brady singing "That one day in september" and all his other footy songs .... that would get the crowd singing and in the mood for footy!!
