Both Mcartney and Springsteen have played the superbowl in the past decade, I know it's not the same thing, but surely these kind of events must have a certain appeal to performers.

much different. playing at the superbowl is massive publicity. go have a look at the wikipedia site which lists the acts who have played the AFL grand final. vanessa amorossi in 2001, natalie bassingthwaite, guy sebastian, christine anu, rolf harris, daryl somers... the list goes on, and olivia newton john is probably the biggest name

I think we have differing definitions of "good voice". Believe me, I'd listen to Lennon, Dylan, etc over Meatloaf any day. But it's not their voice that made them stand out, it's how they used it. Meatloaf didn't get the best out of his voice, but boy did he have one.

And Jeff Buckley is massively overrated. Paper thin, sickly sweet voice. No character, and the most superficial of emotional undertones. Pretty much pitch perfect, sure, but I've never felt anything but my skin crawling when listening to him. At least Meatloaf can blow you away with the sheer power of his voice.

thats half my point. i agree meatloaf can sing, but he doesnt have an all encompassing voice as an instrument like the others. lennons voice can send shivers down a spine, meatloaf just makes someone think 'wow, that guys hitting some massive notes.

jeff buckley paper thin? wow, you need to listen to more of his catalogue. the guy could sing nearly any genre. listen to the massive scream 45 or so seconds out from the end of 'grace' or his live version of 'eternal life' or any of the led zeppelin songs he covered live... as did only one and a half albums his best stuff is mostly from live shows

having said that, i do understand buckley isnt everyones idea of a great singer. the beauty of music is, i guess, that we can all have a different opinion

I know, I'm thinking that the AFL should look at acts that aren't quite superbowl calibre yet and play the "you want to play the superbowl one day? This wouldn't look bad on your resume" angle. It might not work, but it couldn't hurt to try.

Meatloaf? FFS who on earth was responsible for giving that has been the gig?
Get the feeling that Vlad might have been the culprit.

I guess his music doesn't fit the demographic of the BigFooty poster (Male, Age 18-45) His superbowl performance was the only performance in Superbowl history to rate higher than the actual match itself, the guy was walking ratings.

He was 43 during this performance, his last official one actually in 2002, and he was bloody brilliant, the crowd is in the palm of his hand. Genius.

Whether you like Madonna or not the spectacle of half time entertainment at the Superbowl made the AFL's efforts last year look even worse. Whilst they would have a far larger budget to use surely we can do this better? We are not a Victorian suburban comp anymore.

Having the Superbowl at night certainly makes it easier to make it a visual spectacular but what would be suggestions to improve the joke that is the AFL grand final half time entertainment?

Madonna was brilliant.

But that doesnt mean we need Grand Final entertainment at half time.

The footy is plenty enough entertainment in itself. Half time is for food drink and talk.

Just get some decent relevant younger performers pregame, give them a 25 minute set, do the National Anthem and be done with it.

Madonna was almost as bad as Meatloaf at least the Loaf was live Madonna was lip syncing (and doing it poorly) almost fell over whilst dancing and had to rely on new younger talent to try an stay relevant. Check the ESPN poll on her performance

To enable the half time show at the SB the NFL has to extend the half time break out to 36mins up from the usual 12 mins. If we tried to do something similar we would see players suffering muscle tears due to cooling down too much over that long of a break. Let's just stick with the classics a performer doing Waltzing Matilda, One Day in September and the Holy Grail before the game then the anthem an into it

How long before we get a night GF? It's gotta happen one day. Eventually the AFL will need to come up with something new to keep guaranteeing mega-TV rights. A night GF with a half-time spectacular like Madonna put on (WOW:eek::eek:) would put the AFL on the world stage like never before.
