Just found this old gem and couldn't help dig up the meatloaf thread.

That would be cool, but there are so many other younger Aussie bands around that would not only blow Meatloaf out of the water but give AC/DC a run for their money. And do it for a helluva lot less. Something like that would be awesome for the band's exposure and help enrich the already great modern music scene in Australia. I'd like to see them try bands like Ball Park Music, Little Red, Hungry Kids of Hungary, San Cisco, The Jungle Giants, Tame Impala, The Temper Trap, Architecture in Helsinki etc.
So much talent to showcase to the country.

Wow. Hardly going to pump everyone in the crowd up before the game.

It's probably off topic and a matter of the music board, but none of those bands deserve to be in the same sentence as AC/DC, or even Meat Loaf's grand final performance.

There is only one that is worthy from the shores of Australia.

But if it ain't AC/DC of Barnesy, Australia doesn't really care much for it's rock 'n' roll music. It's a big facade.

So is this where we all name obscure shitty Indy bands that only have a small underground following just so we can try and come across a bit cooler because of our music cred?

Lame

No. It's about having having people who are creating good quality, current and relevant music over has-beens or bogan anthems.

^^^ spot on. There is so much young talent atm that would do a fantastic job come grand final day yet the AFL keeps geeting these old has beens. Not saying lionel richie wasnt good but ever band you just mentioned would have done just as well if not better for a lot cheaper to.

It's not going to work if hardly any among the crowd know the words, or even the tune.

I don't think it matters. Quality is what matters.

Regardless, 4 of those above bands have had ARIA nominations so they shouldn't be nobodies unless you're largely ignorant to Australian music.

Aren't the ARIAs a bit like the Grammys, i.e. lacking in credibility? Besides, you wouldn't expect everyone at a concert to know who e.g. Dane Swan is. They've got to cater to the lowest common denominator with the entertainment, or at least attempt to.

They are criticised mainly for being largely superficial rather then genuinely based on merits. But that gives further weight to the fact that these bands are still considered to be marketable enough to warrant nomination.

I don't think you have to. I don't think Lionel Richie was catering to the lowest common denominator. He may be famous and his songs well known, but I very much doubt the majority of fans could really care less about him.

At least most of the bands above appeal to both genders and produce quality music. That's more then can be said of Guy Sebastian and the Ten Tenors in 2004 or Christine Anu and the Australian Idols in 2003.

I don't know any blokes that remotely enjoy the above artists.

Ultimately this is all moot because it's not going to happen...

No there isn't. In fact there isn't much yourng or older talent that could do the job.

The job is to cater for a massively wide audiance both in Australia and overseas. Personaly I don't that job should exist but that's another issue. The job is not to entertain a small section of the 100k at the ground and a small % of the Australian TV audiance that is into music. Nor is it to showcase Australian talent to Australia or the world. It is to enhance the entertainment package for as many of potential TV audiance as possible.

Someone like ACDC fits the bill IMO. They put on a consistent quality and are very well know in Australia and overseas. As a bonus they are Australian - or at least some of them are sort of Australian and people overseas see the as an Australian band.

The ARIAs are irrelevant and based on which band can suck the most **** and know the right people in the industry. The awful bands mentioned a couple of posts ago that grace the jjj airwaves ride a wave of mediocrity and spit out souless tunes pandering to a distracted and white-washed demographic. (see this overdone Hitler meme for an accurate account of JJJ and the 'Downfall' of Australian Music

The AFL pre-grand final entertainment will never be good - I would personally rather it scrapped and on the with the game. However that seems unlikely, but arguing over what bands would be best to put on is surely akin to arguing over which sharp instrument would be best to pierce our genitals with.

"I'm afraid that Meat Loaf has been taken unwell so he's unable to join us for the end of the show".

I'm so glad I have no daughters...

Geeeeeeeeezusssss.
He can sure do a fine impersonation of a Water Buffalo giving birth.
Yeah that'd secure my vote...for the other bloke.

Cant believe somebody got that close to it, yet didnt put it out of its misery.

Geez, it's depressing to see him these days. He was an incredible singer back in the day, particularly paired with Steinman's lyrics. I left his Melbourne concert early a few years back because he was so awful, and can't imagine how he's still going today.
