Richie Benaud often remarks in his comments (yes I know he doesn't do the footy) that one should always think of what ones opponents would least like to do. It has been remarked by opposition officials that Medhurst is one of their chief concerns going into matches. I dare say that if opposition coaches don't have to structure their backline with regards to medhurst then the resulting match ups would make it harder on all our forwards.

This means he should play. Another dilemma is whether Medhurst would react positively to being dropped or not. I think that if either we get to a no finals stage or other youngsters demand a game only then should he be dropped.

We won't trade him (or Polak)unless the coach thinks that his attitude is unchangable whilst at Freo. And given that he hasn't been dropped, I'd say that he's been doing most of what's been asked of him, apart from kicking a decent haul.

And given that we've got a decent backline (when not injured), a decent midfield with some quick youngsters getting some experience and we've finally settled on a forward line structure that seems to work... why would we bother with a high profile trade for a Wells (who we would never get, anyway) or Corey? The cost would be far too high. Lets get some early picks (but not too early!) and plan for some decent replacements that will be needed in 3-4 years time.

The problem with Medhurst is that he is a small full forward, and not your typical crumbing forward pocket. Playing McPharlin and Pavlich together in the forward line has made Medhursts job harder, not easier. There's less space for him to lead and to play his natural game, where as in the past with mediocre tall forwards like Croad and Simmonds we were able to structure up inside 50 leaving space for Medhurst. Mark Williams at the hawks is in the same situation. With his pace they are able to isolate him inside 50 and he kicks plenty of goals, but when Franklin and Roughead develop he will probably struggle. Tall forwards win you a lot more games than small forwards, so someone like Medhurst is always going to be inconsistent at a club with a plethora of quality talls.

The fact that he hasn't re-signed is an interesting situation. Prior to the 2001 draft several interstate clubs were interested in recruiting him but he implied that if he was drafted interstate he would consider staying in the WAFL. The AFL spoke to him but found that it wasn't draft tampering. Maybe that situation has changed, I don't know. Maybe he is ready for a fresh start in a different city. Maybe he wants to prove his worth to the Fremantle Football Club and doesn't want to be distracted during the season. Only time will tell.

It be a shame and a backward move for us if he was traded, the Wiz cant last forever. So what is he is worth seriously if he asks to be traded ?

If you use the ottens precedent (a player having shown alot of star potential - never quite getting there) then probably around 2 top 16 picks and probably argue top 10 in Medders case or the equivalent.

I would be very surprised if any club offered you two top picks like that in fact noone would. Medhurst is in a different category to ottens and does not command the same market value As an ottens or a nathan thompson which at end of the season there is always a club crying out for an experienced KPP.. just my thoughts

More like the Vardy precedent, champ, two first-rounders is a serious case of over-rating. Clubs generally trade big for big bodies.

For reference, 2001:Three-way Club Exchange. Daniel Schell from Fremantle to Adelaide, Peter Vardy from Adelaide to Melbourne, Round Four Selection (currently number 57) from Melbourne to Fremantle.

By coincidence I think that was the trade that allowed us to take Medhurst in the draft.

Not that I would trade him, but at best an early second rounder I'd say.

Geez, that reference seems a bit harsh Blocker. Paul Medhurst, Daniel Schell and Peter Vardy. Pick the 40 goal a year forward from that three. Vardy was useful but he fronted Adelaide in an era when they had a pretty good team.

I can't think of any reference points off the top of my head but he's worth a top 10 pick. Just because a few of you trolls on Bigfooty don't like his last few games doesn't mean he can't play. As I said before its more indicative of the tendency to underrate the good small forwards.

Ok - I have been laid up with a bad back for a few days (sympathy both requested and required) and have watched half a dozen games while sitting there with not much else to do... and yes, Medhurst has been down of recent weeks, but prior to the break - who wasn't?? In the first part of the seaosn he was playing very good footy. Kicked a fair few himself, set up LOTS of goals and played a bit up the ground. Trading medhurst would be a big mistake methinks.

I agree IP, if we trade him we'll be copping it sometime next year for how stupid we were to do so. Major mistake.

I agree trading Medhurst would be a big mistake, his role has changed this year he is no longer the go to player as we now have Pav & MaPharlap, all we we need is 40 - 50 goals a year each from Farmer & Medders and the others will do the rest.
IP hope your bad back gets better before Sunday so you can jump out of your seat and cheer every time Medders kicks one.
BTW how did you get a bad back, pulling onions & carrots, on second thoughts you do not need to respond to that ;)

Gee, I hope you're OK IP.

First off, for the record, we are mad if we trade Medhurst. Can play and tough to match up on. Personally, I don't believe we are thinking anything like that, and trade-talk about him and Polak is just mischief-making by the media. I believe we will delist a minimum this year, and try and trade marginals without success.

Secondly, I offered up an actual trade that occurred that I believe has more relevance than comparing Medhurst's trade value to Ottens, to highlight that two first rounders is patently ridiculous. Vardy played in a similar style to Medhurst and was worth around 40 goals per year to a side uninjured. I could have pointed out that Farmer came our way for pick 17 ( I think) in 2001. That would be a reasonable rule of thumb.

Thirdly, my hypothetical suggested Medhurst trade value was early second rounder. I reckon that is fair. There is not a club going round that would offer a top ten pick for Medhurst. Honestly. Ask yourself if you would use pick ten in the draft on a player like Medhurst. Or ask yourself if any club has ever (recently- who knows with those pre-95 drafts) taken a player like Medhurst in the top ten. It doesn't happen. For a reason.

Agreed, We would be mad to trade Medhurst. He is of higher value to us than a 2nd round pick which as blocker so succinctly points out is probably what we would get.

P.S. Hope your back feels better IP.

I think Blocker has covered most of the angles, basicly Farmer and Medhurst are playing new roles. Farmer seems to have adapted to a crumbing, hard tackling, team oriented game. Meddie is still learning his role, converting from a "goal hungry" instinctive player.

There is definitely a place in our best 22 for Meddie.

I think IP's back is suffering from 2 weeks of bombardment from the anklebiters. My head suffered a similar bombardment.

I agree about being worth a top 10. If we could get pick 19 for Koops, I reckon we could get around about pick 10 for Medders

There is no way in any mans world any club would EVER trade a top 10 selection for Medhurst.

Yeah, the Tigers parted with picks 6 and 20 for Nathan Brown, and the Weagles with Pick 10 for Daniel Chick. Anyway, it's all hypothetical. He won't be going anywhere is my tip.

Commiserations to IP on the bad back. They're no laughing matter. I just hope the club gets David Mundy around there quick smart for a get-well visit. :D

Before I get accused of talking complete crap. I wasnt advocating trading Medders and said it would be a bad move. I dont know if he'll want to go, more than likely trying to up his ante and get a few more $$.

P.S. Hope your getting better IP.

Daniel Kerr, right?

Seriouly Ex - you used to be fun and reasonably respectful. Now you just want to throw in one-liners that just stick the boots in. Problem is you're not a very good troll. Perhaps you're just too nice.

I know - my husband pointed out that last night that I might not be able to go on Sunday... :( I am sure I will make a miraculous recovery by around midday, jump up at one of those medders goals, do myself an injury as I skewer myself on the flipped up seat, and not be able to walk for another week.

And no - the carrots and onions were my parents' generation.... ;)

Thanks to you all - now that's enough. I'm feeling a little uncomfortable with all this attention.... It must be remembered that I am a shy and unassuming person.

Actually if you're sending anyone - make it Pav. McPharlin or Mundy as the back-ups. ;)

Early second round pick is on the money I think. Nick Davis has struggled at Sydney, but was a high calibre player in a similar mould to Medhurst when he left the pies for pick 23 (which became 21 when the blues lost their picks).
