No Carlton commentators or boundary riders on fox or free to air? Is that not a give away to start with? Every other club has a representative during games and we have to be stuck watching our home games against teams like the bombers with Tim Watson in the commentary box and Andrew welsh on the boundary?!

This preseason, nothing but negativity towards Carlton. This is the time of the year where every side deserves a pump up yet we've got dunstall today saying our only two good youngsters are Weitering and Cripps.

Not one mention today of the fact that we've got Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, docherty, Kruezer, casboult, Byrne, Phillips and wright out of the side, yet we hear about the outs the saints have? Last week the commentators couldn't stop talking about Melbourne's outs either.

This negativity has flow on effects on memberships and club stability, it even affects us at trade time when we lose quality players for unders.

Absolute joke.

Have to agree. This game at our home ground you would think would have a Carlton flavour about it. Yet nothing. The worst thing you can become as a footy is irrelevant. Ask Melbourne. Sadly we are just a footnote to most media outlets.

It will just make the success that comes after this rebuild so much sweeter but at the moment we have to cop it on the chin.

Our performances for a long time havent exactly screamed "Respect our club".

Granted we haven't exactly been a powerhouse..
But why does a club like Melbourne get so much respect in the media?

I see your point but I wouldn't call it an agenda against Carlton I'd think it is more these commentators not really knowing the ins and outs of the carlton list like we do. Let's be honest we haven't really been a thrilling team to watch over the past 5 years and have turned over more than half our list in the past 2. For a commentator who is studying the contenders rather than the collection of kids who are yet to prove themselves, we are irrelevant....as sad as it is.

Sam Lane and Andy Maher have been busy with the AFLW coverage. Granted, we are a bit barren for commentators given we're part of the old big 4, but you need to remember that we were the club of the silvertails in our big eras, so hopefully it's a good thing that we don't have a plethora of supporters who have become pseudo-intellectuals in the sporting domain.

I don't think Dunstall was harsh on youngsters at all, just described it as a learning experience, and he did make clear mention that he felt 5 of Carlton's best 6 were missing today in a discussion with Brad Johnson on the coverage. They followed that up with that we need to find more difference makers beyond those names, and that's a fair call.

With how much we were turning it over when we sprung counter-attacks and then left ourselves (both through positioning and poor recognition) completely exposed over the top, there wasn't a lot to write home about. If more players were buying each other space, only for someone to kick a scrubber, I think they would have been much more positive, as opposed to somewhat positive.

Bruce really didn't get much of a rev up despite kicking 7, and that was reflected in how many glit-edged opportunities he was given. Anyway, I'll go do my match review over in the match review thread.

Also, I have to get this in:

A lot of good young talent and look to finally be on the cusp of some form of on-field success. In a few years we may be in the same boat.

Docherty Weitering Byrne

I don't see a huge difference. Keeping in mind Melbourne only won three more games than us last year.

They did mention the outs today. They said "add Simmo, Docherty, Kreuzer etc etc to this side and it would feel very different".
After I put this thread up they mentioned it. Almost a bit of a backtrack on the pasting the commentary gave us leading up to that point

Some of Dunstall's points were ok in terms of the analysis he is about 80% right. I was just glad (VERY GLAD) that Dwayne Russell wasn't commentating. That guy is wall to wall negativity and FAKE NEWS when it comes to Carlton.

What I would like to see in commentary is discussion on where players are put on the ground. Rowe was playing what percentage as a forward? or was it just in the ruck? Weitering only last 10 minutes of the match in the forward line? I would have to watch the footage again to work it out, but as commentators I want analysis of where players are on the ground and why they are playing there.

These guys just don't provide anything close to the analysis needed. Dunstall at least tries in part. Sandy Roberts is a good straight man, but shouldn't be straying too far from his role. The other guys shouldn't be in commentary - Dwayne Russell included.

And sorry to say but "DAL" Dal Santo may be a cheery addition to the commentary, but he adds nothing but more generality and banality. At the beginning of the game he said Princes Park is like a "good old country ground"? WTF? What country grounds hold 25,000 people?

Certainly agree we have some comparable young talent, though Melbourne would be looking to play finals this year, we certainly won't be. Naturally a team like that is destined to have more buzz about it.

Behind closed doors we would be looking at playing finals, make no mistake.

If we made that known to the media, could you imagine the shit-storm which would be circling the club from that point on?

I'm not sure making finals would be our main focus right now.

Only the most optimistic Carlton supporter would think we have a chance of making the 8 this year and the media would certainly feel the same way. I definitely think the media have more respect for Carlton in that we appear to be approaching our rebuild the right way (Bolts, going to the draft, bringing in the likes of Marchbank etc) rather than going for a quick fix.

Frankly, to slightly echo Chism, I'm not too phased if they're pumping us up, talking shit about us or saying nothing at all, but it will certainly make it all the more sweeter when we finally bring it all together

Last year when we were on our win streak, every game and every time we were mentioned in the media, a huge point was made about how our list is older than people think.

When we rebuild and play 7 blokes who have 0 afl games beyween them today, we get criticised for how far off we are.

When we were a finals team we were copping criticism left right and centre about not being a good finals team.

There is a definite agenda

Agree about most of what you have said but they did state we had 5 out of our best 6 out and actually named those guys. This was late in the 3rd

Yep, but this was after I put the thread up. Almost seemed like they backtracked on the excessive criticism in the first half.

They almost had an apologetic tone in the second half, which justifies this thread.

FFS, what have we done that warrants a lot of positive media commentary ??

We have been a basketcase for over 20-years yet you think the journos should be in raptures over us ??

You earn respect and there are plenty of other clubs who have done the hard years to earn theirs, we have to do the same so let's STFU with all this 'woe is me' sooking up, its nothing short of pathetic.

Any chance you can reply to someone with a little less hostility?
