Luke Darcy (Re Lions on talking footy) "They were the best team in the competition 7 or 8 years ago".
Either Darcy isn't that good at maths or he is a very bad judge of football talent.

Brown and Chris Scott make a few comments on us from last night.

One other thing was Buckley saying he had no sympathy for Leppitsch before or after the game on Saturday, considering all that Collingwood had been through. Chris Scott diplomatically called him on that last week he said he felt for Hardwick.
The bitterness is strong in this one. Its great. Believe he not only felt for Harwick but was going to reach out to him for a chat.

just watched AFL 360 on line, i think buckleys response was taken out of context. he was asked- 10 minutes into that 2nd quarter did you feel sorry for leppitsch? he said no. you wouldn't expect him to be feeling sorry for an opposition coach during a game surely. a bit later chris scott said we all can have empathy like bucks did for hardwick a day or 2 later and buckley nodded in agreement.

i didn't get the impression that buckley was dancing on leppas grave, you have to be ruthless during a game.

My boyhood idol, Mickey Conlan is on Open Mike tomorrow night.

Have had the pleasure of getting to know Mick in recent years in and around Brighton where I live and he looks even more like a tank now as he did in his prime.

For those unfamiliar with Mickey Conlan, he was a 200+ game half forward for Fitzroy wearing the #12 throughout the 80's and recently the CEO of AFLQ and close to being appointed CEO of the Brisbane Lions in place of Greg Swann.
The Tank. I still remember 86 as a young fella watching Conlan bang the ball thru from the boundary to win us the game against the Bombers. Only thing he did all day but what a kick. Loved watching the Winners as i lived up North and seeing goal of the day and often it was Micky. Look forward to the interview. I see Gary Pert is on the Winners Re booted. So we might get another Fitzroy game.

just listened to greg swan on SEN, a few points he has raised.

he said- looks like we could have a couple of debutants this weekend. rhys matheison + ??
we will look at hurley, apparently richmond have made a 5 year offer.
we are definitely not going after cloke. we are concentrating on getting experienced key defenders.

he mentioned we are a young group again. i wish the club would stop bringing up this excuse, the pies were younger than us on the weekend.

Copping it in SEN and RSN this morning. Think its what we need.
It was the most shallow and ill informed discussion I have heard. Still banging on about losing players, but since the go home 5 we average no more than any other club. They argue against a retention allowance, that's fine but remove it from every other expansion club as well.
Sure the club is not without fault for the position it is in but don't sit in a radio studio in Melbourne and pontificate about how football should be run in a rugby league state.
I honestly believe they would be happier if it went back to being a suburban competition between Melbourne clubs.
They also keep on about how the profitable clubs prop up ones like ours. Don't they understand without the tv rights that the AFL gets, more clubs would be in trouble? The current rights are contingent on having teams in non traditional states.

Yeah, even as a Melbournite I think you're right. Thing is we had that and look what happened.
When an interstate club does badly they are classed as inept. When they do well they are seen as being pampered. Lose/lose.

Yeah I agree. Hats off to Swan for doing the rounds and putting himself out there but the injury alibi is tiresome. Our injury list is actually good in comparison to previous years.

Something else is definitely wrong...but playing kids at key posts doesn't help. It's not so bad when they are mids, but when you have Schache as the main key forward and Andrews (currently injured) as our CHB - well it is a reason, but probably not an excuse for the effort on Saturday night.

We need our best 22 out there most weeks to be competitive - and those need to be switched on for us to compete.
