I disagree in this case Ironmonger. Twenty two blokes were selected last weekend. Be they high picks, or low picks, or (in the case of Essendon) backup picks way out of left field, the expectation is effort - win, lose, draw, A grader or D grader - effort.

The effort was not there from many in relation to this specific game. There seemed to be players selected who seemed like they did not care as to the result in that first half specifically. Otherwise their effort to the challenge would have been evident, regardless of the scoreboard. Let's remember, the scoreboard read 0-0 at the start of the match.

Some of these articles in the last few days are hardly outlining in-depth tactical analysis. But what they are providing is a burning spotlight the basic premise of providing effort to the contest. That spotlight is required, and even though we may not like the journalistic style of some of these guys, I'm quite happy for the basics of that spotlight that we are getting at the moment. It's thoroughly deserved.
Strangely enough, I agree with everything you're saying. It's mostly the sweeping conclusions drawn by Whiting and before him Hamilton that I object to; you're totally right that there needs to be a spotlight.

That line about the effort not being there for this specific game is instructive. The analysis floating around just isn't consistent with the team's performance two week ago against Sydney, so it seems mad to throw up Rich's contract extension, signed in March, as a reason for his supposed poor form.

Fitzroy side of the family.
I reckon hell will freeze over before we get genuine analysis rather than sweeping conclusions from Hammo and Whiting. They are up against some constraints - the top three being limited wordspace (especially in QLD print), the need to say something controversial or glowing to keep that wordspace, limited in-depth tactical knowledge of the game it seems, and limited journalistic ability :)

But in the words of the old Lord of the Flies scenario, they do have the conch.

really good breakdown, though we should be looking at some of those players in terms of what we paid for them.

Robinson- came from free as a delisted agent, what we have achieved with him is quite ridiculoius

Christensen (drafted at pick 40, btw he was due to go in the first round but fell cause of his size and no outstanding attributes), we paid pick 21 for him and at this stage probably not performing to that standard

We really drop off when we look beyond these guys, normally guys at this level are the 2nd tier players behind the bonafide stars of a team which we dont really have at the moment besides Beams
I really think we got a steal with Bundy at 21. He has been one of our stronger players this year and, while he drops his knee, always puts his head over the footy. His finishing in front of goal is one of the only things that is letting him down. Considering he has only just turned 24, he will be huge for us.

Strange to see Christensen called out in the media tbh. He, along with Zorko and Robinson have given their all every week.
Yeah I thought Bundy actually played fairly well against the Pies. Seemed one of the few who were cracking in and genuinely trying to change our fortunes. Browny singled him and Richy out. I think Browny should have focused his attention on the likes of Hanley and Bell over Bundy.

Agree with Bundy playing okay this year. Biggest let down for mine on the weekend was Bell
Agreed. He ran around in circles looking almost disinterested. All his disposals were just rushed clangers forward even when he had time and space. One highlight of his season so far has been his tackling. Being a bigger body he has always made them stick and inflicted some pain at times along with it which has been a welcome sight for Lions fans considering so many of our players over the past 3 or so years consistently slip tackles(A by product of having a young team with smaller bodies I suppose). In saying all this something that has really disappointed me in Tommy Bell the past 2 weeks against both Port and Collingwood is that his tackles have all of a sudden stopped sticking. The opposition have been brushing him aside with ease. If he puts in a similar performance against the Demons this weekend akin to the past 2 weeks he needs to be dropped imo. Hopefully the coaches have out him on warning and he comes out against the Demons with a point to prove.

I'd be putting up every single article on the wall in one of the meeting rooms or the gym tbh. Lots of players don't read the media these days but they need to know exactly whats being said about them and shouldn't be cushioned from it.
Have to disagree here. Making players read their own bad press is about as outdated as coaches balling them out in front of their teammates. I think players are encouraged to ignore the press these days and for good reason given the quality (or rather lack of it) of current football journalism. Pretty hard to then turn around and give it credence which would be the only justification for waving it in their face.
But more importantly, if we have to resort to that type of tactic to get players to self analyse their own poor performance (and I personally don't believe we do), then we have a serious problem Houston.

On the FB Coaches wrap an interesting point has come up. Apparently we only trained 1x 35mins on the track last week, and this week they will increase it too 90mins. That seems exceptionally low and especially for a developing team that generally has awful skills

My boyhood idol, Mickey Conlan is on Open Mike tomorrow night.

Have had the pleasure of getting to know Mick in recent years in and around Brighton where I live and he looks even more like a tank now as he did in his prime.

For those unfamiliar with Mickey Conlan, he was a 200+ game half forward for Fitzroy wearing the #12 throughout the 80's and recently the CEO of AFLQ and close to being appointed CEO of the Brisbane Lions in place of Greg Swann.
My favourite also!

And I think you could add a need to maintain relationships in a small environment and especially in the case of Whiting, placate his employer who is, after all, the AFL who woyldnt want anything too controversial or in-depth. This was raised on Media Watch a few years ago when the AFL first started producing their own media. I don't think Whiting has been particularly bad in his work or anything but you do have to question how hard he (and his AFL 'journalist' colleagues) would ever be prepared to go. In Vic it's at least balanced out by dozens of other blokes doing the rounds. In QLD he's about 25% of the AFL media.

This seems to be the problem with this group.

They can't take tough feedback, and they can't be coddled.

What does one do?

....say good boys, it's all about participation rather than results!:mad:

..this is the product we reap from mamby pambying kids, not encouraging them to be competitive (no 1st, 2nd, 3rds in lots of jnr sports) not giving them a get in there and have a go attitude, keep trying, never give up, a work ethic, an appreciation for what they have instead of taking it for granted thinking it's a god given right. Being told they are good at something when they are not..

....home truths, but then again they could get offended and hurt their feelings.

I could go on. Suffice to say I also believe they should read and hear everything written or said this week.

He is the biggest one way runner in the team. Defensively when the ball is not in his area he is walking or slow jogging. The defensive midfield work of our team is a major problem for us and Christensen is a big part of the problem. IMO he needs a big kick up the arse.

Bundy seems to need the immediacy of the inside contest to stay motivated. He is a beast when the ball or opponent are in his immediate proximity.

Gets lost when he's in space and we turn it over. Needs to work harder and get to more contests. It's fixable.

Just listened to Greg Swann on SEN yesterday afternoon.

http://www.sen.com.au/audio#tE4ekZMS5z7QEtPt.97

He sounds very deflated and seemed very hesitant when answering some tough questions about the club and footy in Queensland.

As well as Leppa, it is probably the first time Greg has questioned his own actions about the direction of the club. I personally believe he has done a great job compared to our last basket case of a CEO. He has been a terrific spokesperson, always happy to chat with SEN, AFL and other media consistently to keep us relevant in this environment.

But once again, this relates back to a lot of talk about our club and little action on the field.

That is how he sounded, he sounded very tired of having to pump up our situation when all we seem to do is deflate it at least once a fortnight with a terrible on-field performance.
