Some of you may have read about a maxi yacht that went down off Port Kembla last weekend

http://www.smh.com.au/national/she-was-my-first-mate-my-soul-mate-20091017-h22j.html

I knew one of the victims (good mate of her sister). While both of the victims were demi-yacting celebrities, they were unknown to most Australians. Yet both families were expected to front the media and give them some tasty video bites for the nightly news.

This is not an isolated incident involving unknown Australians. Is it just me, or do you find this intrusion pretty offensive?

Seems people are being conditioned to believe this is the done thing.

I could just imagine the approach used - 'tribute.. etc etc' I recall seeing the interview with the wife and thinking 'WTF, why is she doing this?'

If you hit someone up at a vulnerable moment and tell them they'd be honouring a loved one, they might just fall for it. Whatever the case, the journalist won't die wondering.

In a similar vein, the zoom-ins of grieving Samoans at their church services following the tsunami were horrendous. You can just imagine the vision editors back at the station high-fiving each other at how "poignant" and "moving" it will look on the 6pm news.

I'd like to add.

90% of the reporting in various forms of commercial media on all aspects of the aftermath of Black Saturday was a ****ing disgrace. News crews and reporters running around Kinglake and Marysville and Yea, **** me get a bit of perspective.

Special mention to the one and only.
Karl Stefanovic: This lady here who doesn't want to be on camera, I know, they've just had a reunion. She was worried about her friend and, are you OK?

Woman: I don't want to be on camera.

Karl Stefanovic: No, you don't want to be on camera. I understand that completely, but it's a great story. I'm not going to show you but it's a great story...

My brother in law, who is an infamous ex poster, who most of you would know, had the misfortune of losing two ex employees, and close friends, in a car crash just before christmas.
To give the story some kick the two poor, elderly unfortunates were killed by their own grandson in a head on crash on an isolated WA outback road.
Even though my brother in law had left the organisation nearly a year prior he was inundated by the media, (don't know how they found him), who were quite persistent in getting some "background" and a "comment" from the poor guy, who was already devastated by the tragedy.
Neeedless to say they were given a short and quick piss off. But some of them pestered for at least 3 calls before getting a don't argue in no uncertain terms.
Plain and simple, the media are scum.

Noticed the OP's thing more recently with relatives of car crash victims i.e. standing on their front lawn and chatting the day after it happens.
It should be added people are a lot more media hungry - they love cameras and notebooks these days.

Its a self perpetuating cycle.
