Player development eh Simmo?

He does make a few comments that stick in the craw.
Tbh has a lot to do with the draft age.

In any year 1/3 of the clubs have no intention of winning the flag and are building for 5 years time. Raise the draft age and stop bringing children into a men’s league.

The AFL would never go for this out of fear of losing kids to other codes or professions.

Many 18/19 year olds aren't going to want to play for peanuts in state or development leagues just for an outside chance of making a list when they are at the age where they could be learning a trade, starting uni or similar. Plus the multi-talented kids who will go into rugby or basketball for a quicker paycheck.

The West is 90% written by AI. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets to 100% in the next 12 months.
Ill have you know it is much harder than it looks. But yeah once they work their way around the co-Pilots moral compass it will be 100% AI...

Write a 300 word newspaper article for the West Australian newspaper about what a useless footballer Harley Reid is using inflammatory social media quotes from dickhead nuffies from the Fremantle Dockers.

I can’t help with that. Writing a defamatory or inflammatory article—especially one targeting a specific individual like Harley Reid—is not appropriate or responsible, even in a satirical or humorous context. It’s important to treat all individuals, including public figures, with respect and fairness.
However, if you're interested in a light-hearted, fictional sports rivalry piece or a fun take on AFL banter between West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers fans, I’d be happy to help write something entertaining and cheeky that stays respectful. Would you like to go in that direction?

This has merit, but I can't see it as the AFL fears other codes/sports taking talent
Big (like huge) EU soccer clubs take 12 year olds in to developmental schools (with jobs for parents etc)
College Basketball is probably a big threat and there are AU kids in College Football Scholarships (its megger bigger than the AFL)

It’d be good if you could stash later draft picks and didn’t have to bring them onto the list straight away, like the NBA does.

Some 18 year old draftees are ready to play straight away - imagine making Harley wait another year - but some are years away. If you could draft the rights to those players but then delay bringing them onto the senior list, you could then have the choice to bring them into the reserves setup and develop them there, or if they’re Victorian or South Australian let them stay home and play VFL/SANFL for a year or two. Either way, leave the AFL list spots for players who are actually a chance of playing AFL.

I’d never thought of holding the rights to someone. I quite like that. I’d only ever thought of either raising the age or limiting the number of unders 20s on your list. Would have to be a limit you can hold someone for.

ziad Plague I understand where you’re coming from, but I actually don’t think you’d lose that many, kids love footy. Australian Football is engrained in our culture. There’d also be Higher salaries to draftees.

State footy would also be better and so would the rep footy.

Schoey seems to be warming to the club again. Has said a couple of things this week. One that he's been into the club twice in a week or so for retirements and he's feeling the love or something like that. Secondly on an unrelated question pretty much teed off at Cornes over the Reid rhetoric and drew a bit of a line in the sand.

Admittedly I have avoided his stuff for the last month or so but tuned in to see how he thought we'd go against Pies and then to hear the review. Maybe he's been gradually warming to us again for a while or noticed the drop off in clicks but it's great to hear he's back in the club, reminiscing positively and enjoying it all once more.

How much of that was Simmo related? Had a falling out after he was dropped repeatedly then retired and all the covid stuff. Was clear he was pretty dirty at the club. Maybe with the turn over of staff he's letting go of his grudge a bit.

Quite possibly some, but he did have a weekly segment with Simmo as part of the clubs own media, got Simmo on his podcast and working with Simmo now at Fox. Maybe the disgruntlement has cooled over time by being forced to work with him. Maybe it was some higher ups or AFL in general he was grumpy with.

Lots of maybes. He just strikes me as a dude that doesn't take an L. Always hated getting dropped and took it personally. Hated not getting a lap of honour and took it personally (funnily enough came up again today as it was queried whether Gov and Sheed would be doing one this weekend)

The thing he was most pissed off about(based on his complaining) was that he didn't get a lap of honour when he retired.

Of course, that was during COVID, so they couldn't do it but he said some acknowledgement for him and a few others, such as Masten, would've been nice after COVID ended.

Said the club's been trying to get the past players involved a lot more recently though. I think under the last couple of years of Nisbett the club didn't make any effort.

$1m++ sign on at 18 may sway a few. But it's what the AFL worry about not what I loose sleep over.

Could be a result of some of past players passing away recently, perhaps the club is trying to improve their involvement with the overall welfare of the club?

Schofield, Masten AND Jetta never got laps. Apparently two or three years ago when Schofield brought that up with the club the club responded with a 'too much time has passed now' and 'no one will remember' that was from Schofield's words, I can't remember what episode of BackChat that was from but I remember watching him saying that clear as day.

So I don't really blame him if he's pissy at the club at the moment if that's how they're gonna treat three of the clubs most recent premiership players.

Even so, it's 7 years ago.

Time to move on I would've thought.
Assuming that is the case.

Started before that when Pyke took over. Was a real focus to get the past players in and integrate them more with the current crop to forge a real sense of identity and tradition.

Sumich was the first one to not get a lap, i thought at the time that was piss poor, nothings changed since.
Some players get to do a lap at the G/F, I don't know what the criteria is for that.
