Yet they have the worst midfield in the top 8 or 9

Maybe not the model to follow

They're pretty much the only model we have of a team that's been rebuilt without concessions, father-sons or NGA kids.

Sure they shat the bed in the finals as an inexperienced team, but their model did take them to the top of the ladder from the bottom...

Who have Hawthorn picked up with concessions outside of Dear?

"Pretty much the only"

Hawthorn make two.

A comparison of their rebuild vs Adelaide's would be interesting. They've certainly drafted and traded for more punchable faces than Adelaide...

Hawks are on another level completely in terms of how they've done it.

Their best player wasn't even the highest pick in a mid season draft. And their All Australian 70 goal fwd is about 80 years old and was basically retired

I honestly can’t get over it. The resemblance between the two (Barassi and Mitchell) is just uncanny 🤣

Tom might have received and imbibed in a supply from his former teammate Willie before that interview methinks!
Don’t think you normally drink that stuff. Maybe I used to do it wrong.

Thats not what Peter Bell said this morning on ABC

Said a relationship breakdown at Freo and then we jumped

Id much rather believe your version, shows some aggression to go get what we need

Don’t believe Bell end for a second. Why do you think the “relationship broke down”?

Also refused to acknowledge the “other opportunity” he was taking was with WCE in the press release.

He was saying he thinks Freo have stuffed up and couldn't talk up Merriman any more. Just said he didn't think he would leave for money knowing him well

I haven’t listened to this but suspect Bell is trying to dress it up a bit.

My mail for this one is pretty good and we just gave him a better deal than Freo; there really isn’t much else to it.

He was going to go to GWS because their deal was also better than Freo’s but then we stepped in with an offer and as he always wanted to stay in WA he took it.

I've said this a couple of times now, but we can't follow the Adelaide model. They traded in their best two players with significant unders for a combination of go-home factors, and that they both went to another level once coming back to Adelaide. They got lucky with Dawson in particular, handing over only a future first from the then raining premiers for him (about which the swans were pretty publicly pissed, and as a side note that pick wound up with Hawthorn who took Weddle, so...anyway off track).

This left them with plenty of draft picks to take other good players. Rachele and Soligo were taken in the same year they traded in Dawnson, and Michalanney the same year as Rankine.

In addition to that, they also had a number of decent senior players still hanging around (Tex, Smith, Laird) and a number of reasonable mid-aged role players (O'Brien, Milera, Hinge) who have plugged gaps and allowed them to go with only the best of the kids.

For us, we not only have NO decent senior players (Cripps was...fine, Kelly and Hunt fell in a hole, Yeo failed to launch, and Sheed and Gov were wiped out), only a couple of mid-aged players and most of the older "role players" are really just holding places until we can find someone younger to come along and replace them (Cole, cough Owies, even Duggan is probably in this category unfortunately).

As for trading in a couple of super stars, we missed Warner this year, and is there anyone else from WA that fits the bill? And even if we talked someone into coming, what's the odds we'd trade them for unders? I'd like to think the new trading regime will be less of a push-over than the previous one, but the odds of us finding someone that's about to become a super star, playing interstate but really keen to come home to the point we can stare down their current club for a pick in the late teens? Unlikely.

We're stuck with the draft...and that leaves us with the Hawthorn "model"...whatever that is? (Draft better than North?)

Actually, because I was bored, here's the list of every player drafted out of WA who will have been at their current club between 3 and 6 years at the end of next season (assuming that we're not getting anyone good this year...)

Note that I've left off anyone who has not played a senior game, or has already been de-listed (might have missed some from this year in that category), as the aim is to spot which of these guys could come in and be in our top 2-3 players on the list:

3 years: Dan Curtin, Koltyn Tholstrup, Lance Collard, Joe Fonti, Lawson Humphries

4 years: Jedd Busslinger, Ed Allan, Darcy Jones, Jed Adams, Kaleb Smith, Steely Green, Robert Hansen, Jack Buller

5 years: Angus Sheldrick, Jacob van Rooyen, Jeese Motlop, Corey Warner, James Tunstill, Arthur Jones, Taj Woewodin, Nic Martin, Wade Derksen

6 Years: Logan McDonals, Shannon Neal, Jack Carroll

That's it.

Of those, only Curtin and maaabye Sheldrick look to be capable of reaching a "top 2-3" player level, and both are on long contracts.

All of which is to say that we really can't "do a crows" and bring "back home" a couple of great players for (relatively) cheap because there's no-one out there to bring back who's out of contract and looking to walk in the next year or two.
