Anybody here signed up to Meetup.com and gone along to any events?

I have and I wish I had found the site years ago.

Meetup is like the opposite of facebook: It's about building genuine social networks.

As in, you put aside time in your day to meet and talk with real-life people.

Maybe even befriend them. As in, become actual friends. Not people who just write 'happy birthday' on somebody's 'wall' when their website tells them that it is that person's birthday.

A novel concept in this day and age.

Over to you etc.

Considered it but saw that a lot of it was marketing related and/or related to niche interests.

And those groups that were general seemed to be organising quite large events rather than 3-10 person meets which I'd be far more comfortable with.

Would be good to hear a firsthand account of it, especially considering I've realised I dislike quite a lot of my current friends haha.

I think my friends flatmate used this, due to the fact she recently moved to Melbourne from Perth.

She has met a few weirdos, but on the whole I think it's been a positive experience for her, she has made lots of friends from it.

Tell your friend to come outside, I have some dead roses for her.

Yeah i joined up to that site about a month ago and signed up to a couple of Mountain Biking groups and it's been a positive experience so far. Only joined the one event and the people were brilliant.

Someone did tell me there can be quite a few weirdos on the site, although i can't remember specifically what he said. I guess it depends on what type of groups you join.

It's been like this for some time, most of the stuff that is no longer around on this board went to the Limbo Club.

Back on topic, utilised this site when I moved to Sydney from Perth and made quite a few good friends, and got to visit some very underrated places and a few fun piss ups. One of my worst drunken antics was involved with a meetup event.

Expect to meet predominantly overseas expats with a sprinkling of interstaters. if you are lucky you may meet one or two locals.. they are usually the types that need to 're-build' their networks because their other friends have moved on from the social scene due to family, moving etc.

Is it just me or has the General Discussion board gone to shit?
Don't be a sook now.

......but explain yourself, wassup?
anyone wanna meet up with me?
Yes would love to but instead of meeting up in a pub somewhere lets just do a day hike or something. Maybe go camping or play Jenga on a fault line somewhere.

We don't need alcohol to break the ice.

The best date I've been on was when I suggested taking kayaks out into the middle of Jerusalem creek marina at 11pm at night. Floating around out there together in the dark silence, hearing nothing but the waves and seeing nothing but the stars and lights along the bank was incredible
