People forget that Marvel is the only ground that is litterally one train ride accessible to most Victorians. It is where every VLine service terminates and where all country train services depart from, and every metropolitan train passes by it as part of the city loop. It was never seriously designed for car accessibility or usage.

Even the MCG (the self-declared peoples ground) can't lay that claim. For anybody who lives in the West of Melbourne or regional Victoria, there's a change over at Southern Cross Station to get to and from the G.

Ooo yeah, and it's not cheap anywhere in Melbourne, thank you very much Wilson Parking. Dumb fact for the day ... The man who owns Wilson Parking has the company HQ in the British Virgin Islands and interestingly they aren't listed on the Stock Exchange either.

Open up unused afl members and mcc members for less well attended matches and see the attendances grow. Zero cost option

Accor Stadium already do that with a permanent members area on level 4 in the Western Stand and parts of level 1 and 6 in the same stand are also members areas during high demand events like Origin, Socceroos Internationals and the NRL Grand Final. Would be a very good idea for like level 4 of the MCC and also the AFL members area once the Southern Stand is rebuilt

By all means make the MCG the number one ground in Australia, but covering the rail-yards might not be a bad idea and redevelop the Richmond station while your at it! Make the whole area a sporting and entertainment mecca!

With the area above the tracks, they should put a pub there like the Camfield outside of Optus Stadium so there's somewhere to go close by for drinks and food before and/or after an event at the G or even at Olympic Park or the Tennis precinct

Yes, they could place eateries and pubs all along the walkway above the railyards on the way to the MCG, Tennis Centre and AAMI? Create something that can be used all year round? Maybe even a rail stop just at the MCG for use on Gamedays? The only drawback is the lack of imagination? If not, go for it!

They can put whatever whizz bang novelties they like, even for a sell out game if people have the choice between the back of level 4 and home on TV (live) plenty will go for the TV

Looks like as a MCC member you have to book for every game this year (No walk up) That will help in bigger games like those

This is only the case for big games - in the first five rounds these matches are melbourne bulldogs, Richmond Carlton and Melbourne Essendon. All other games still allow walk ups.

Don’t dare put a roof on the joint.

Cover the train lines and go deeper over Burton avenue to increase hospitality areas.
That said, cover the train lines at marvel too and rang solves the congestion problem too.

Cover Burton Avenue right down to a redeveloped Richmond Station.

Easy done.

Look I agree the roof is a terrible idea, we have to remember it’s also a cricket stadium and I am not sure where the ICC would land on that

If they want to spend big money they should make all the train lines there under ground. Build a roof over the top of it. Keep most of it as open land but they could also sell some off for hospitality and retail

The cost of roofing over the rail lines is not cheap and to simply put a park over it would not justify the cost. Take Federation Square as a case in point. It was originally budgeted in 1998 at $162 million. The final cost was $500 million and it went two years over time in construction.

If you are going to roof over those rail lines it needs to be accompanied with something that will value add to the site such as apartments and a hotel.

What ... before you start bulking it out as they've done at Marvel? You are right, it is a balancing act. I like "The Victorian's" suggestions above too. The big driver is cost and viability of what covers the rail lines. After all your suggestions and ideas have been proposed and fallen through on at least three occasions that I can recall over the last 30 years.

I even think that the paved concourses surrounding the outside of the MCG would benefit from being covered over with some translucent roofing. It would provide shelter from the prevailing elements for patrons when waiting to get into the ground and cover for merchants selling food and other merchandise from vans and pop up sites outside the ground.

Maybe being a sport lover I am bias, but parkland opening up over the tram and train lines joining the entire sporting and entertainment hub of Melbourne together is a worthwhile investment.

If we genuinely want to be the sporting capital of the world, combining that area all up into a sporting Mecca will bring more events.

Another Olympics, or dare I say it the biggest show in the world the FIFA World Cup.
