They need to know that if they break the law that there will be consequences. Break the law = lose your freedom. We need to make jail a less comfortable place for these offenders as well. The bottom line is that jail is not a great deterrence for these criminals. A lot of them look forward to going back to jail. I am all for rehabilitation in jail, so long as the broader environment in there isn't cushy. It needs to be uncomfortable, not have foxtel, pay tv, and better facilities than 90% of Australian's have access to.
This must be why Port Arthur is considered one the most successful gaols in Australian history.

Cousin of mine is a detective in Dandenong, says the Islander kids are rippers, individually. They get fingered for a crime, he pulls them out of school and asks "was it you who stole this car?"

"yes"

"what about the Audi from last week?"

"nah, that was me mate such and such."

"anything else?"

"yeah, we did a B&E last week at such and such address."

He then takes the kid home to mum, who is demonstrably upset. Para phrasing etc but he maintains these kids have good hearts and will turn out to be solid citizens when they grow up and get jobs.

Then the Catholics would start fighting the Protestants again
Yeah...........no they wouldn't .I agree deport them and their families immediately they belong in the 3rd world not here .They are nothing like previous migrants these are uncivilised and nothing good can come out of having them here. They are AFRICAN males who are generations away from being able to live and behave accordingly in a Western country shouldn't be our problem .

Youth unemployment a massive taboo in Victoria (and potentially australia). Areas like Hume (North west) dandenong and many country areas have rates of above 25% youth unemployment. Could easily correlate issues like ice usage and crime to unemployment and overall job prospects.

Easily is the word. Most kids suffering disadvantage don't become druggies, thugs and thieves. It's very often those where parental guidance has been found wanting.

if there is 25-50% no jobs its a bit of a pickle is it not?

Fills me with confidence

It's highly unsatisfactory. I'm just unconvinced by the woe is me argument that thuggery, theft, general unsociable behaviour is attributable solely to lack of job opportunities. The reality is that most people in that terrible predicament don't resort to thuggery, theft and unsociable behaviour. There's more to it than that. Poor parenting being a significant one.

and there we have it.. those who aren't involved in direct bad arse things aren't going to say a bad word but those who have the strong end of the stick are
saying it is all something else.

Why don't you come out and say what is what rather than just wiping the camera screen occasionally and telling 'nice, bland stories' about people.

It is always a bit of this and a bit of that and never the twain shall meet.

agendas abound and those in the 'real' know are just swiping the camera screen until they get what they want.

The current system does not work.

And it won't get better by just taking away even more elements of perceived freedom.

These are their formative years... putting them somewhere, where they can meet and learn from others with more experience in areas of crime is idiotic.

I've not seen any stats on it, but I'm pretty sure that the majority of first time child crims, will become recidivists for the rest of their life.

The current system helps set them on the path. It doesn't help them at all.

Even adults treat police like shit, because they know they are generally safe from harm.

All we are currently doing, is taking kids off the street and turning them into society resenting adults.

And it isn't about the kids having computer games, or pay per view or whatever... A lot of the time, it's because they feel safe, and maybe even cared for, while incarcerated.
They are someone, and they mean something.

Suddenly they are released back into the real world... and they are meant to just re adjust?
Adults have serious difficulties doing it, why would it be different for kids, especially during a time that shapes you as an adult?

It isn't about beating them, it's about education and support.

This isn't wishy washy bs. Anyone that claims that it's too easy for a kid in prison, has a limited understanding of what it's really like.

Even some kids will tell you, "prison is great". But that's because they are only thinking about certain aspects... and have forgotten about all of the crying, the fear, having to ask just to use the toilet, and the total anger and frustration at not being free.

They probably just remember the three good meals a day, shelter, and care from people employed to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Tldr: Prison sucks. Don't claim it's too easy on the kids.

Heh. More Crime x 3.

My Brother and his mate were in CI and RDC. Both writers.

WCA, DMA, PFK, CI, 3174 etc. Melbournes nascent Hip Hop scene. Those were the days.

Turned into the rave scene, then heaps of them ODd on gear in the late 90s smack epidemic.

They did let the convicts out, gave them guns, told them to slaughter the blacks and then locked them back up when there was none left to kill. That makes it up there with the best.

Not exclusively no.

Back in the day, most low level street gangs were white (PFK, 3174, Dandy boys, Frankston boys etc) and the occasional Vietnamese gang, with the Bikies above them, and the Italian heavy hiters and certain 'elements' of VICPOL calling the shots from up above.

VICPOL has been largely purged of the worst elements, and the Italians have been quiet lately (however I note the recent slaying overnight that tells me something is going on). The Vietnamese elements have died down, and the bikies have been getting targetted heavily as a result, so its not surprsing (particularly having regards to the meth epidemic, new migrant groups being introduced and the recent recession) that street level gangs are starting to flourish again.

Was PFK a gang or just a graffiti crew from the Frankston line?

I know a lot of the original guys are boobheads/drug ****ed nowadays. Still pissfarting around Frankston.

Peaked at 16/17 most of those types.

Bit of both. Some pretty serious stabbings and a murder at Seaford was the worst of it.

A lot got swept up in the Smack surge in the mid-late 90's and/or progressed beyond street crime into harder stuff and got locked up. North Frankston/ the Pines has a lot of Somali wanna-be gangsters now from what Im hearing. The Pines has always been home to some pretty rough crew though. Ex Naval turned Housing commission houses and estates. Always been at the lower end of the socio-economic scale. Through golf links you wind up in Karringal which is slightly better.

You know it mate. Smack just ruined shit. I joined the Army in 95 to get away from it (the writing was on the wall by that point). Came back to Melbourne in 99 and everyone was a freaking junkie. Went from being all about art and music and going all city in the 80's to total shit a decade later.

That said, I almost miss the Smack days. At least those guys only every got involved in property crime and kept to themselves. This Meth epidemic is an order of magnitude worse.
