Anyone got the three proposed jumpers or the theme song youtubed?
This is the only one I know of:

Apart from the bastardisation factor (obviously), it's not a bad jumper. Similar in a way to the Brisbane Lions jumper that we have all mourned the loss of. Put another way, if this was a jumper in your local footy league, it would be one of the better ones.

The pre-season (or away) jumper was almost identical. Can't find a picture of it, but from memory, take away the gold cuffs and trim on the yoke and put the Hawk on a 45 degree angle, so it is running parallel to the edge of the yoke and that's the alternate jumper.

there's a great irony that the AFL thought merging north and fitzroy would create a "super club" too strong for the AFL but melbourne and hawthorn would be OK. i guess they were banking on losing a lot of fans of both clubs forever as a result of the damage caused by the merger.

... and to think the Melbourne FC members voted in favour of the merger. Idiots then, idiots now!

Idiots now?

I was 6 years old at the time so I could have hardly voted but it was definitely an embarrassing moment for our club :(

So was Alan Jeans.

To be fair, there's a few North greats that wanted us to die up north.

I was actually re-reading some of the old stuff about the Hawks/Melbourne merger the other day.

Everyone forget how deeply involved Crown was in it. Crown was lined up as the naming sponsor. Essentially they would have been the Crown Casino Melbourne Hawks.

Kennett and Lloyd Williams were the Hawthorn side, Stockdale the Melbourne, getting all together.

They would have pushed for plenty of MCG games, Friday nights, and used the side basically as marketing tool for CRown.

Re: Melbourne Hawks Song

The merged teams song goes:

We're the mighty Melbourne Hawks
We play each game and we play to win
Watch us, we play with a grin
Every heart beats true, for the gold red and blue
As we sing this song for you (Whadda we sing - presumably!)
One for all and all for one
Two will make you stronger
Keep your eye on the mighty Melbourne Hawks

.
Anyone else suspect this song may well have been written by those two American guys from the Commonwealth Bank ads?

I know that with this merger the whole drafting process of every club would have been different, but it would really interesting to see how well they would have gone.

Purely hypothetical but I would think they would have been a very strong club. Support would have been good.

Support would have been good.

I reckon about half of both sets of supporters would have just stopped following AFL, to be honest.

I was at Camberwell Civic centre the night the merger was voted down. It was a great night for the club and signified a rebirth. With all the passion shown that night, I knew the club would survive. 12 years later we won a premiership and got 50,000 members. Who would have believed it possible back then?
To be fair to Melbourne, most of their votes in favour were proxies arranged by the AFL in dirty deals behind the scenes. I would like to see Melbourne reconnect with their supporter base and revive their fortunes, for the sake of the competiton, (just not too well).

Funny how in 97, Hawks and Dees finished bottom 2 :o

as i recall. the hawks and the dee's were struggling in 96. when they met in round 8 of that year. the hawks had 1 win and a draw and the dee's had 1 win i believe. the hawks won the game and went on to play finals and the dee's well i don't need to tell you what happened to tham that year

Re: Melbourne Hawks Song

Found this in my old Footy record from the North Melbourne v. Geelong Qualifying Final 1996.

The merged teams song goes:

We're the mighty Melbourne Hawks
We play each game and we play to win
Watch us, we play with a grin
Every heart beats true, for the gold red and blue
As we sing this song for you (Whadda we sing - presumably!)
One for all and all for one
Two will make you stronger
Keep your eye on the mighty Melbourne Hawks

God! They even had the Crimmins-Truscott Trophy for the club champion award.
In my memory it was:

We're the Melbourne Hawks
We're the high-flying Hawks

We're the mighty Melbourne Hawks
We play each game and we play to win
Watch us, we play with a grin
Every heart beats true, for the gold red and blue
As we sing this song to you
One for all and all for one
Two to make us stronger
Keep your eye on the mighty Melbourne Hawks

But I only heard it once. The 3rd last and second last lines were to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy. The rest was to the tune of The Grand Old Flag.

Having not actually heard the song, I would have thought every line apart from the sixth, seventh and last would have been to Hawthorn's tune, seeing as most of those lines are nearly word-for-word the Hawthorn club song and others fit in perfectly in place of the original words e.g. "Two will make you stronger" in place of "Is the way we play at Hawthorn"

From memory, the 'super club' argument was only referring to on the field.

You have to remember that North were dominant in that era. yes, they were yet to win a flag at that stage, but they were clearly heading towards being contenders, if not clear favourites for a number of years.

The other clubs baulked at the thought of topping up our list with the best Fitzroy had to offer, as well as all the other concessions being thrown at us.

Whereas Melbourne and Hawthorn were both terrible and posed no threat.

The clubs wern't afraid of a North/Fitzroy club dominating off field.

Wow. Talk about a super bump.

This must have been one of my first posts and I've been here for over 8 years now!
