Re: Melbourne Hawks Song

Don't have the figures handy but the old stab at Melbourne supporters for the merger vote from hawks supporters is a bit rich. Percentage wise history will show we had a greater percentage voting in favour yet the difference in real terms was only a couple of thousand. Many many hawks supporters voted in favour and many Melbourne supporters were locked out of the vote.

But thank god this didn't happen. What a shocking song.

Not surprising melbourne got a strong yes vote. In hindsight it would have been a real coup for them, taking over a powerhouse with temporary bad luck.

The equivalent of harvey norman getting control of IBM

I don't completely blame Melbourne supporters for voting yes. In essence the merger would have made them financially viable forever, got them off the bottom and added a wealth of gun players to their list, but at the cost of:

- Adding Gold to their jumpers trim and a small Hawks logo (which would have disappeared after a few years)
- Changing their mascot from demons to Hawks
- Altering the club song

Hawthorn had everything to lose out of this merger and despite the fact that the 'Save Hawthorn' campaign had little money and administrative support, they rallied our supporters to lift the club out of debt and into an AFL powerhouse. Don't hate us for being so extrovertedly buoyant about our recent success when you consider that forces conspired to kill the club we love. It's definitely makes our financial position and the 2008 flag even sweeter.

Idiots now?

I was 6 years old at the time so I could have hardly voted but it was definitely an embarrassing moment for our club :(

Don't think many Melbourne supporters voted for it - there was a surprisingly large number of proxy votes fron uknown sources.

However, the idiot Jeff Kennett (who is now your beloved leader, wanted to sell you out probably because he was pals with the AFL honcho and it suited him politically) voted for it and Nick Holland couldn't wait for the merger. Who are the real idiots.

First of all, many of the 'supporters' who voted yes were just rich semi-followers who gave money to the club. They didn't care about our history, but only current success and boasting rights

Secondly, some Melbourne fans were just tired of no success. I don't know if anyone else can sympathise but our last 45 years have been getting so far for no result. It's only now that Bailey, Schwaab, Connoly and the board/coaching staff have shownb some balls and rebuilt the club from the ground up that that trend is looking like its aout to break. My dad had moved to Australia from South Africa a couple of years before and wasn't a memebr at that point, he said he would have voted yes becasue he was tired of no success and just wanted to see a good team

Thirdly, The current crop of hard cores vwould vote no, the current board would actually care what we think and wouldn't even consider it.

And finally, hats off to the Hawthorn fans of that era, they fought for the cause and saved, in hindsight, both clubs. The two clubs now look thety're heading into sustained periods of success on field, stability off field and are establishing themselves as power houses of the AFL; one nearly if not already there, and one about to explode onto the scene :thumbsu:

Good post, so good that it needed to be said twice

You could argue its made us about 3x more feral - its tha paranioa.

I still reckon after all this, of *certain* people would still try to shaft us if they can.

And some of us are well aware which way jeff swung at the time

No, we hate you because so many of your supporters pour a bucket on clubs doing exactly the same as you did, only a few years later.

They're obviously the young ones who don't appreciate what we went through.

Personally I'm a fiercely proud Victorian who would rather watch West Coast and Adelaide crumble to the ground before seeing the end of North, Bulldogs or the Demons in Melbourne. The more Vic teams the merrier!

Its not all and I'll grant you that but the behaviour of so many Hawthorn fans when North was struggling for survival in late 2007 was truly vile.

difference is, that Melbourne somehow managed to get underage HAwthorn members included in the vote, and sold the merger by telling them "you can have Farmer playing for the hawks"

Is this just some kind of piss-take now to see how long this thread can be 'alive'?

An 8 year bump and a 3 year bump, boy oh boy wowee.

Wow, I was too young to remember this but THANK GOD this didn't happen

I couldn't imagine supporting anyone else, let alone Melbourne.

The thing that I don't understand is how this could have possibly happened so soon after Hawthorn were a powerhouse on field? It seems so unlikely today that a team can nearly have to effectively fold so soon after a period of dominance
