Welcome, footy fans the Demons Lair.

COACHING SHOCK HORROR!
In what can be described as one of the biggest coaching scandals since Ross the Boss moved to Fremantle.
The Melbourne Football Club earlier announced that Paul Roo's resigned for personal reason's ahead of his final season at the club. It was pre-determined by fans that Goodwin would no doubt take the reigns for this season earlier than expected.
This was blown away with a shock signing. As the club signed Nolan Bosh to take over the club this season. Reports indicate that Nolan had been meeting with the Board during the 2015 season in hopes of joining the Casey Scorpions Coaching staff. Whatever Nolan was selling, The board members brought the whole barrel to make a decision like this on an unknown coach.

Simon Goodwin has released a statement about the news.
"It's disappointing that the club has overlooked my tenure to take over earlier than planned. However I fully support their decision and will continue to offer my services as an assistant coach until the time comes where I may get my opportunity. I look forward to meeting with Nolan and going over the gameplan and ideas he has for the club moving forward."

NOLAN BOSH PRESS RELEASE
blankface.jpg

"Firstly to the Melbourne members and supporters. The news of my appointment may be shocking in nature. There was a plan in place for the development of the club and the future handover of coaching roles here in Melbourne. My appointment as Melbourne coach was not a rash decision by the board. I had spent 2015 in deep discussion over joining the VFL coaching staff. Several of my ideas and game plan initiatives were taken on in high regard. I was offered the role a few days after Paul Roo's resigned. I may be an untested coach at this level but I assure you the fans of this great club I would not take on this job if I didn't believe 100% I wasn't capable of doing it.
I'm excited for the opportunity to prove myself amongst the coaches currently in the AFL. The board has expressed their view of where the club is headed and how long I have to make it happen. I want all Melbourne supporters and members to know. I'm here to make this proud club a force again. We will break the finals drought. My job depends on it.
It's going to be challenging on match days but I'm focused on delivering results."

With the pre-season nab rounds just around the corner. We'll wait to see what Nolan Bosh can bring in game 1.

Until the next issue Demon fans. may your heart beat true.

BOARD EXPECTATIONS

It's been revealed, that newly appointed coach Nolan Bosh has been given the task of pushing for finals contention this season. Nolan may get an extension to his 1-year contract if he can bring Melbourne fans some relief by making the finals in almost 10 years of finishing in the bottom half.
He's tenure could be short-lived if he fails to deliver on getting the Demons close.

MEMBERSHIP TARGET
the MFC is hoping to get 30,000 members on board this season. Currently, we have 24,239. only another 6 thousand to go to beat the target.
If you haven't renewed your membership or always thought about it Now is the time Demon fans.

FINANCIAL STATUS
MFC are set to make a profit this year if they can manage to run under budget costs. at the moment a target profit of $324,609.00 is our baseline
Facilities are suffering at the moment. There is no more funding availiable to continue the upgrade of the club house and supporting facilities. currently the up-keep alone is more than can be spent in this department.

Almost 2 million dollars is tied up in coaching staff contract for this year. with contracts signed until 2017 there will be no respite to spending in this area.
The Medical team is down on numbers with just 4 people across the 3 roles. Injuries may be on the rise this season for the club.

The Recruiting Staff are just 6 strong. With a reasonably qualified scouting group, They will need to make the most of their limited viewing time to scout the right players for the club.

We still have a lot of back office work to do around the club. Lets hope this season can prove to be the launching pad we need to be back amongst the powerhouse clubs.

Until next time, May your heart beat true Melbourne fans.

Petracca was given a run in the CTR. He played well getting 19 disposals, 6 uncontested marks, 5 contested possessions, 3 clearances and 5 inside 50's.
Oliver - was looking disappointing on the HFF again this round. He only had 7 touches but kicked 3 goals (top scoring for the Dee's) which saved him from having a dud day.

Neal-Bullen - Played from the bench again. didn't do so well the second time around. Just 12 disposals and 3 inside 50's.

from the seniors Kennedy-Harris up forward, Gawn in the ruck, Lumumba from CHB played well for the Dee's

NAB 3
The best display from Melbourne during the pre-season. a similarly aged side to round 2 (23.6) the Dee's controlled an attacking Port Adelaide outfit to win by 44.
Nolan Bosh again deciding to mix things up played several players in different positions for this game.

N.Jones - Usually playing from the middle was given a small forward role to which he didn't complain about kicking 4.2 for the Dee's
Kennedy-Harris also had a great game. 27 touches, 6 uncontested marks, 4 goals and 10 inside 50's from LHF
Vandenberg started out on the RW but was pushed into defence in the LBP. Nolan discovering Berg's talent as a defender in which he collected 34 possessions , 9 contested and 6 rebound 50's
356540_np.jpg

Lumumba all but cemented his spot as CHB with another good showing. 25 disposals, 12 contested and 4 rebound 50's
Brayshaw, Oliver, McDonald and Neal-Bullen all played below their previous form.

Technical Issues have prevented us from displaying the remainder of the NAB challenge games
*Another mass error on my tactics page - rotations kept crashing the game. restarted and simmed the pre-season. taking off from round 1 just ahead*

Head Coach Nolan Bosh was available to discuss his thoughts on the pre-season.

What did you learn about your new side?
"At the moment, we look better on paper than we actually are. We're a really good foot skilled side but are probably a little lower in terms of getting the ball to use it by foot effectively. So we cancel ourselves out really there. We're lacking in the midfield and up forward. It's early I know but at times, it's difficult moving players as I lost out in one area to gain in another. Being a young side. It's going to take a bit of time before I can reap the rewards of these kids development. We have some highly rated talent here at Melbourne. "

Who surprised you this NAB challenge?
"Neal-Bullen - Exceeded where I thought he could play and the opposition he could take on. He did a good job running through the midfield and I think he'll get plenty of games this year. The other surprise can from Vandenberg. He looks like a midfield forward type with some defensive attributes. We had to move him back in a pinch and he excelled from there. went from hardly being in the game to leading possession winner I think with 34 in NAB 3. He could be really damaging on the rebound which is a style we are looking to play."

What's the main factor holding back Melbourne at the moment?
Club funding is really limited. Our back office is quite poor. I have to be careful of how we play as injuries might be frequent with the lack of facilities and staff we have in that area. The side itself is poised to improve. We just need a good couple of seasons financially and we can invest where we need to."
"Thanks."

That's it for this installment of the Demons Lair.
Be sure to stay tuned Round 1 is just around the corner

Until next time May your heart beat true

DEMONS LAIR

Sun Shines on Gold Coast as the Demons are left wondering.
A hard fought very skilled gamed played out at MCG. Melbourne costing themselves a win as they managed to outplay the Suns but forgot about scoring. Gold Coast's transition on attack looks damaging as Melbourne struggled to contain the ball up forward. Gary Ablett was quite with just 20 disposals whilst

A.Vandenberg for Melbourne racked up 39 touches from the back half. Despite his effort, the Demon's didn't do enough to win.

Lynden Dunn Injured himself pre-game with a wrist sprain. It was serious enough for him to withdraw from the match and emergency Garlett brought into the game as his replacement.

This match did not start as out as a typical round 1 clash were players would still be trying to find their feet and the skills would be a little rough around the edges. Instead what we got was a highly contested, tackle frenzied very skilled opening term.

Nathan Jones: Kicking the first goal of the game for Melbourne

The dee’s found the avenue to goal first with Nathan Jones opening his seasons account. A lot of possession in gold coast’s forward half but the Melbourne defender’s were up to the task. Vandenberg and Petracca doing all the cleaning up down back starting with 14 possessions each for the quarter. The running game of Melbourne created a few holes on the rebound which Gold Coast took advantage of. Coach Nolan looking to change that set up for the second term. Demons in front by 2 points.

A disposal error by Jetta gifted the Suns their opening goal of the second term. The frenzied pace of the first quarter still on display as free flowing end to end football was on display once again.
The Dee’s using run off the half-back flanks to transition the ball forward. Were doing it easy but finding it hard to score with their entries. Rebound football from the Suns was working better for them as Matera scored to open up their lead. The gold coast suns began to get their talented list on the same page and the Dee’s looked to be losing their way as 5 un answered goals sailed through the suns end. Bugg getting one late for the Dee’s. Suns out to a 29 point lead at the main change.

Gold coast continued to win the midfield battle and their inside 50’s sky rocketed to 40 6 minutes into the third. Melbourne defence doing the best they can against such an attacking press. but at some point, the lines will break if they can’t get the midfield in the game.
Coach Nolan must have been reading our minds as he made several positional changes through the wing and midfield and the game balance started to swing Melbournes way. Although not able to stem Gold Coasts attacking efforts the Dee’s were able to slow them up and allow themselves to eat away at the margin reducing it to 20 points going into the final change.

T.Bugg the unlucky Demon to be given the red vest. Matt Jones comes on and heads out to the wing on Rosa who’s played very well so far. Melbourne continued to work hard and create chances to score.
Brayshaw had a few opportunities about 40 mtrs out but chose to hit the top of the square and coughed up possession. He did finally manage to fire one off and get a major for the Dee’s but the Suns had scored 2 themselves by that point.
A lot of hard work being wasted by Melbourne. Gold Coast realising Melbourne are getting back into the game decided to flood the contests.
Nolan Bosh telling his players to run off their man hoping they can get a fast break if they win possession. It was working but the Dee’s failed to score registering 4 out on the full from wayward shots. Falling short in the end the Demons loose the opening round by 10.

So Close yet so far. The boys couldn't get the job done against the Suns

Melbourne coach Nolan Bosh disappointed with his forwards kicking errors
“We’re a better foot skilled side than that. We gave ourselves every chance to get back in the game. We turned the tide of possession but didn’t capitalise. It’s a lot of effort to do that and we really let our defence and midfielders down today. They battled hard but the Forwards lacked a bit of composure.”

Port Adelaide v Melbourne

Adelaide Oval 26/03/2016

Summary: Port Adelaide who were unbeaten in the NAB challenge games couldn’t transfer that into round 1 as they were beaten by the reigning premiers Hawthorn by 29 points. The power will be without midfielder Mathew Broadbent as he struggles with an Osteitis Pubis injury suffered at training earlier in the week. Despite his loss they should be able to take care of the Demons as they have a better side across the board with the exception of their ruck wich is a little shallow.
Melbourne who are recovering from their 10 point loss to Gold Cost will need to lift if they want to be a chance in this game. The demons don’t have the class that port Adelaide does across the ground. Along with their small forward power, it could be a tough day in the office for the defenders.

Round 2 Match Review

*Lost my notes for this game*

Port Power home to send Demons 0 and 2.

Port Adelaide
has used the Demons mistakes against them as they overcame a 16 point deficit at half time to run out eventual 14 point winners. Melbourne will be licking their wounds as they head back to Melbourne. The Dee's had every chance to win this game and probably should have. However, their forward structure failed to deliver on opportunities as poor kicking really took them out of the match.
r0_30_594_365_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Boak celebrating the 30 point turn around as the final siren sounds.

Melbourne started the game in superb style looking to rebound from the loss last week. The midfield lifted and the forwards started to work together well as they opened the quarter with 7 scoring shots (4.3). Port Adelaide were a little slower in getting their game going. The only opportunities to score they had were from Melbourne players being caught out of position on the overlap. Port keeping themselves in touch with 2.3 giving Melbourne a 14 point lead.

The forward structure of Melbourne started to collapse in the second term. Despite having all the possession and inside 50’s Melbourne couldn’t get anything to show for their tireless effort. Rushed kicks and spray’s out of bounds started popping up as the Dee’s could only add 2.4 to their first quarter tally. Port Adelaide suffering from lack of possession managed to make the most of the chance Melbourne gifted them by turning it over as they put 2.2 onto their total. Melbourne edging their advantage out to 16 at half time.

Port Adelaide become the beneficiaries of Melbournes hard work. The Dee’s just couldn’t find an avenue to goal and worked relentlessly from the back line to get the ball forward. The midfielders struggled against the power and costly mistakes gifting Port Adelaide shots on goals. Melbourne winning the majority of Key stats but found themselves trailing at the final change by 1 point. Port Adelaide putting up a 4 goal term to Melbournes 1 goal and this game had swung around.

Melbourne tried hard to make up for their midfield failures and pushed to run hard and see if they could break the port Adelaide lines. The Dee’s stringing together 3.1 for the term. They wasted 4 opportunities by kicking the ball out on the full in their forward 50. Despite having the forward 50 entires they couldn’t account for Port Adelaide’s press as the Power broke the Demons lines to send the ball into their attack in which they scored 5.2 to run away with a 14 point victory.

1364771830577.jpg

Supporters giving the Melbourne players a piece of his mind Post game. No Doubt Nolan Bosh will be doing the same in the club rooms.

Demons Coach Nolan Bosh post game was furious with his side's performance.

“Our midfielder’s and forward players let us down today. Our backline worked very hard all game but that effort wasn’t reciprocated by anybody higher up the ground. Our back 6 had 31 more disposals than the entire midfield group and almost double that of our forward 6.”

“We wasted so many shots on goal in the last term. We had the opportunity to win but when you miss on the full 4 times in a quarter you really hurt yourselves. Port Adelaide used those errors we made up forward to punish us on transition. I have to find a way to structure this side to limit the effect”

Fremantle V Melbourne

MCG 2/04/2016

Summary:
Both teams are sitting 0 and 2 to start the 2016 season. Fremantle is not travelling well interstate and with a defence and forward structure that remains questionable, The demons might fancy themselves a chance to get to the 4 points this week. Despite Fremantle having great success against Melbourne recently, this meeting will provide the demons with their best chance of getting a win against the purple army.

Round 3
Match Review

Grimes gets Dirty and The Demons win on the back of his 100th game.

Jack Grimes,
Playing in his 100th game amassed 38 disposals, 15 marks and 4 inside 50's to lift the Demons from the backline and secure the 4 points with a 22 point win over the Dockers.
130523_JackGrimes_M.jpg

Sunny conditions but a strong breeze right to left goal post. The match started with both sides fighting over it in the middle. Fremantle looked to have the better run but the Demons defence stopped any entries high up in the forward 50. Melbourne were able to get the ball inside easier and a lot deeper but failed to make Fremantle pay missing 4 getable chances. Chris Mayne (leading the goal scoring for Fremantle) got his tally ticking over. Sandiland to Fyfe to Mayne on 4 direct occasions resulted in Mayne kicking 2.
In a on field nightmare the Demons players started lining up on the wrong opponents. Nolan Bosh pulling his hair out screaming down the phone to get the runners to sort it out. The demons with 10 scoring shots to freo’s 4 are only leading by 6 points at the first break.

Angus Brayshaw was given a chance to play in the midfield and he started strong getting the first clearance and following it up with a shot on goal but only managed a behind. Melbourne continued to have bursts of forward entries but failed to convert with multiple behinds and shots out on the full. The kicking trouble is really damaging for the demons.

130509_NathanJonesArticle.jpg

Nathan jones showed the boys how it’s done getting the first goal after 4 straight behinds. Melbourne were relentless around their forward half and the goals started coming with Watts and Garlett both scoring majors. Fremantle seemed to be getting caught out ahead of the ball allowing Melbourne to catch them out on the overlap. Fremantle finally getting their positioning right as we entered the 20th minute. They scored their first for the term at the 25 minute mark. The Dee’s taking a 22 point lead into half time

3 more quick goals to Melbourne in the opening 5 minutes of the third quarter took the margin out to 30 points and the match was slipping away from freo’s grip. Mayne kicked his third and Nolan Bosh sent big man Pedersen down back to double team him.
T.McDonald in his first game for Melbourne in 2016 was subbed out for Hulett.
The defender not doing his job on Mayne and Lumumba having trouble also. Hulett was brought in to see if he can slow down Maynes charge. Hulett having an immediate effect as Fremantle switched to find another forward 50 target.
Freo lifted their ball movement speed and caught the Dee’s napping on a couple of transitions. Melbourne not wanting to slow the game down yet decided to go toe to toe with freo’s run and see who had better legs. A 5 goal to 3 term Melbourne’s way pushed out the margin to 36 at the final change.

The Coach using Jack Grime’s 100th game as inspiration in the quarter break. trying to lift Melbourne to dig deep and keep fighting.

Clancee Pearce for Fremantle, the main reason the game hadn’t blown out. Had amassed 40 touches 10 minutes into the final term. Unable to get him away from the ball Nolan sent his direct player to defence and Clancee followed. This opened up Melbournes scoring as Pedersen nailed one from close range. Mayne continued to be a problem for Melbourne as he bagged his 5th and kept freo within an outside chance of a comeback. Clancee Pearce scored along with another from Mayne and suddenly Fremantle was back within 20 points. Nolan Bosh deciding now was the time to slow the game down for Melbourne and protect the lead.
That was enough in the end as Melbourne scored it’s first 4 points for the year with a 22 point win over fremantle. Freo now slip to 0 and 3 and look to have a difficult time ahead making it into the 8.

DEMONS LAIR

Welcome back to an off-field update Melbourne fans. We've just been given news to do with the remaining place on the Demons list.

ROOKIE ELEVATION

Demon’s Coach Nolan Bosh Has given the last remaining place in the Melbourne side to Viv Michie.

Viv+Michie+qab-UePu21Xm.jpg

VIV was delisted by the demons at the end of last season but was picked up again as a mature age rookie in the draft. He’s played 17 games for the Dee’s since coming from Fremantle back in 2013.

Nolan Bosh had this to say about his elevation status.

“Viv’s been given a good opportunity here. I still feel we need another midfield body to add some strength to the side. Viv has tremendous clearance ability, Silky hands, moves the ball by foot extremely well. His ability at ground level and how he reads the game, should be an asset for the club. If he can make the most of his chances he might get a good run in the seniors this season.”

We hope to see Viv out there in Demon colours really soon.
Until next time

May your heart beat true Melbourne fans

West Coast v Melbourne

Friday 8/04/2016 - Domain Stadium

Summary:
West Coast has had a horror start to their 2016 campaign. Without a win after losing to Richmond, Sydney and Hawthorn. Nic Naitanui has a severe back injury earned during pre-season training and was expected to miss 11 weeks. The eagles will still be without his service for another 3 to 4 weeks. Jonathan Giles doing the majority of the ruck work in his place. With the past 5 wins against the demons going the Eagles way they’ll be confident they can win this despite their form slump.
Melbourne will be looking to build on their 22 point win over Fremantle at the MCG. Melbournes competitive nature has improved under new coach Nolan Bosh this season. They would like their forward kicking to improve as they waste a lot of opportunities. Jack Grimes who picked up 38 touches last week along with Petracca and Vandenberg have been solid down back for the Demons and would hope to limit the Eagles star forwards. Hard to see the Dee's winning this match.

Jetta makes way for Lynden Dunn’s return to the side after injury. Dunn who started in the side this year up forward will be given the job at CHB against the Eagles power forwards. Lumumba moves into the pocket where Jetta was playing.

T.McDonald had a terrible game defensively last week. Despite being the highest rated defender on the Dee’s list he was unable to match the form Oscar McDonald had been showing at full back.

Round 4
Match Review

Eagles Forward's too strong as Dee's battled hard all day.

West Coast gets their 2016 season underway after 3 losses with a 12 point over a vigilant Melbourne outfit.
Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Lewis Jetta combined for 10 goals and Scott Lycett destroyed the Demon ruckmen across the ground.
Lycett best on ground with 12 possessions, 7 marks, 27 hit outs (3 less than both Melbourne's ruckmen could manage) and a match rating of 8.7

163486-eagles-v-demons.jpg

Jack Darling
celebrating after his first goal - He scored 3.1 in the end.

45 seconds was all it took for the Eagles to score. It was so fast, Melbourne players had barely left the centre square before having to line up again. Melbourne settled themselves after that quick goal and the Dee’s captain (Jones) got the side on the board to even things up. Melbourne working better in the midfield so far with quick transition from defence to forward. Again being able to trap the ball inside 50 they wasted chances early with the wayward kicking. Small forward Jetta for the Eagles was too much for Lumumba to take care of as he got 2 quick goals and gave the eagles a 12 point buffer midterm. The Eagles didn’t stop as they overran the Demons to get another 3 unanswered goals and take 29 point lead at the first break.

Frustration in the Melbournes box as the Eagles continued to torment the Dee’s across the ground. Another reshuffle of matchups finally netted the Dee’s a goal through Matt Jones from the pocket. Melbourne giving away countless free kick’s to the Eagles in their forward half. Destroying their chances of getting back in the contest. Jack Wats was removed from the Game by Nolan Bosh, Lynden Dunn was sent forward and L.Hulett sent to the backline in hopes he could calm things down. Melbourne needing a forward badly at the moment.
Viv Michie coming to the demons aid getting his first goal of the season and the margin was down to 20. Michie was again part of the attack for the Dee’s as he set up Pedersen to score.
Melbourne finally starting to even things up around the ground and get back some of the control they had in the first term. The margin is 13 in the Eagles favour as we go to into the half.

The Demons continued their work from the tail end of the second term to score first. Darling at the Other end got one for the Eagles to maintain the 13 point margin. Melbourne still trying to attack kicked 2 goals to get it back to 1 point before the Eagles again responded with 2 of their own. Both sides now fighting each other for control of the game. West Coast finding ways to hurt the Dee’s on the rebound, started to turn the game back around to their favour. With 2 quick goals ensuring the margin got back out 18. Another 2 to the Eagles and the game was slipping from Melbournes grasp. Matt Jones and Lynden Dunn got 1 each deep into stoppage time to reduce the margin back to 17. Melbourne with a chance but the way the game has gone it’s going to be tough for them.

Bothe sides scoring goals in the few minutes of the final term Melbourne had to roll the dice if they were going to win this game. With time running out and the Eagles defence outworking the Dee’s forwards. Nolan Bosh asked his side play on quick get the ball forward and create chances. Although, Knowing this would leave them venerable on the rebound. The Dee’s got the next 2 goals and the margin was down to 12 with 10 minutes to go. Kennedy slashing the hopes of a comeback getting one for the Eagles and it was back out to 18. Trengove goes forward for Melbourne and bags one. Margin back to 12. as stoppage time ticked over.
It was like watching seagulls chasing a chip in the final few minutes with the ball not getting very far out of the middle. Melbourne trying frantically to get the ball forward. But that was as close as the Dee’s got, as the siren sounded and West Coast come away with the 4 points. And a 12 point win at home.

After the Siren. A close call for the Eagles but 4 points in the bag.

Summary:
The Bombers are coming off their biggest loss (22 points) against Hawthorn. Having lost all 4 games so far, 3 under 10 points they will look to apply the same pressure to Melbourne and be hopeful of a result in their favour. Mathew Leuenberger has 111 hit outs already this season and the Bombers would hope he can continue to dominate against the Dee’s.
Melbourne had a trying loss to West Coast at domain stadium. Despite trailing by 6 goals they fought back and got to within 1 point at some stage. If they can produce that same intensity here against the Bombers they should win. Goal kicking has been a serious problem for Melbourne. Their leading goal scorer so far is Nathan Jones with 5. If they can get on the board more often they should take this game. Demons to win by 4 goals.

Round 5
MATCH REVIEW

33 Point turn around saves Melbourne from an embarrassing defeat.
Melbourne have turned a 14 point deficit into a 19 point win against the winless Bombers outfit. Essendon worked incredibly hard and were superb through the middle of the ground providing plenty of headaches for the Melbourne coaching staff. The Demons never give up attitude of 2016 was again on show as they rallied to provide a final quarter blast and run out the game better than their opponents.
1436518641156.jpg

It was an interesting first quarter from a neutral spectators point of view, as both sides ran into a stalemate up until the 15th minute where Leuenberger separated the scores. Both sides had to battle for possession as it was very even across the ground. The run and carry game Melbourne was trying to execute had been shut down by the bombers and they shot off 3 goals in succession. Suddenly the Dee’s were 24 points down. Thankfully, Melbourne was able to kick straight as they put up another 2 goals. It could have been 3, but Garlett sent one flying into the stands from an easy angle. The bombers going in with a 14 point lead.

The Demons coach furious with what he saw in the first term really sticking it his playing group in the huddle.

Melbourne was responding to the coaches blasting. Albeit, a lot slower than he would have liked. The Dee’s got the ball forward and created chances with their efforts but they could only net 3 behinds for the hard work.
For every good thing, the Demons could muster Essendon was able to follow if not better. Melbourne finding it extremely difficult to close back the margin. Dawes had 2 chances to do something but instead got pinged for holding the ball twice. For some reason he felt the need to play on from taking a mark (against team orders). Melbourne taking 1 point off the first term deficit trail by 13 to the Bombers.

Goddard leading from the front rallies his teammates to keep on fighting hard

Melbourne’s Matt Jones broke the Bombers handle on the game getting the Dee’s first in the third and the margin dropped to 8 points. The Dee’s started to find some space in transition and with the help of the Bombers missing a couple of chnces the lead was down to 4 points. It didn’t stop there for Melbourne as miutes later the scores were tied and then again from the foot of Kennedy-Harris the Dee’s had the lead. Essendon got their first goal for the term in the later stages and took back the single figure lead. Melbourne was applying forward pressure and the bombers sent everyone to contain the ball. The Dee’s un able to break out of the packs formed inside their forward 50 had to settle going into the final term 1 point behind the lead.

Mathew Stokes gave the bombers a 1 goal advantage early in the term to leaving the demons with all the work to try and get back in front. Another out of bounds on the full, this time by Hulett wasted the chance for the demons to tie things up. Matt Jones got on the end of one thanks to an Essendon mistake and the game was tied up 15 minutes in. The sides traded goals as one would take the lead just to have the other side tie it back up. The bombers piling up tremendous forward pressure on the demons back 6. They held their nerve and cleared to allow Garlett who registered a handy behind. Kennedy-Harris found a way to goal and now it was the Dee’s who had the upper hand. Leading by 7. Jack Viney and Kennedy-Harris went forward again and scored and the Demons were on the cusp of a 19 point win. They just had to see out the last few minutes.

The siren sounded without any further scores and the Dee’s celebrated the win. Essendon was certainly a challenge for the Dee’s as the coach thought they would be. Melbourne just doing enough to stop Essendon from registering their first win.

Maybe a little too happy to have survived this match with 4 points

Goddard, Zaharakis and Heppell were dangerous for the bombers. They seemed to be everywhere and were very hard to slow down.103 possessions between them for the match. Each picking up over 30.

Collingwood v Melbourne

Summary:

Collingwood is currently 3 and 2. They’ve lost to Geelong (21) and Hawthorn (10) so they have the ability to run with the heavyweights of the competition. Pendlebury and Grundy have been the standout players for the pies so far. The midfield is likely to be too strong for Melbourne to match up with and it’s purely going to be a need to score game if the Dee’s have any chance.
Melbourne will be concerned with the Pies midfield and will most likely try and tag Pendlebury to slow him down. They can’t waste too many resources on shutting players down as they need to be able to get the ball forward. A defensive game style will probably be the best offence for Melbourne going into this clash. Collingwood tipped to win comfortably.

Round 6 Match Review

Cloke Kicks a bag as the Pies outclassed the Dee's

Melbourne was slow to react as a classy Collingwood side ran rampant for 3 quarters of Football. Melbourne got the first goal of the game but it became a one-sided affair after that as Grundy and T.Adams took apart the Melbourne players. Melbourne was unable to match the Pies in the air with Collingwood out marking them by a considerable margin. Melbourne was more classy once the ball hit the deck but a lack of forward power resulted in them having less scoring attempts than they really should have. Melbourne lifted in the final term to kick 7 one of the few times they been able to score more than 4 goals a quarter. They reduced a 66 point thrashing down to a 42 point win for the Pies.

Travis Cloke had his best showing up forward this season kicking 6.2 against Melbourne

Melbourne got the start they wanted as Kennedy-Harris got the first goal of the game. From there though it was all Collingwood. Their superior mids took over the field and the Dee’s were on the back foot. 3 quick goals with Varcoe, Grundy and Elliot. The Melbourne match up fears started to show early. Grundy was very damaging when pushed forward as he found himself open on more than occasion. The Dee’s focused on using the defence to start their attack battled hard to get the ball forward and were rewarded with 2 more goals. Fighting to stay in touch with the Pies. It was a hard thing to do though as Collingwood had 11 scoring shots to three that quarter.
Melbourne in a hole early 23 points behind.

Travis Varcoe took no time getting his second and the Pies were off again. Melbourne is getting smashed in contested and uncontested marking -10 each. Inside 50 count very 1 sided also. Melbourne is in trouble if this continues.
The Dee’s were having no luck trying to play defensive and Nolan Bosh sent out the order to let the boys free. Melbourne switching styles and trying to take the game on. The change of tactic worked for a period of time as the Dee’s scored another 2 goals. Collingwood waking up to the change and quickly shut Melbourne down again. The pies adding 7.4 that term to increase the lead to 55 at halftime.

It’s getting ugly for the Dee’s. Nolan Bosh will have to find something to change things

It was turning out to be a game incredibly difficult to watch if you were a demons fan. Nothing was going right and Melbourne just couldn’t get possession away from the Pies as they continued to increase the pressure and push the margin towards 70 points.
Melbourne never gave up during the quarter and found a way to score 3 goals against the flow of play.

Lumumba down back for the Dee’s was playing his best game so far with 32 disposals at 3 quarter time. Melbourne just could not penetrate the Pies midfield players as they seemed to be doing as they pleased despite Melbourne trying hard to get through. The margin at 66 in the pies favour.

Nolan Bosh spoke to his Melbourne side during the break, asking them to keep on digging deep and trying.Testing themselves against a better opponent is a good learning opportunity. The Melbourne players something from that began with their best start to a quarter as they got 3 early goals. Travis Cloke was unstoppable getting his 6th goal during the term. Nolan tried several of backs on Cloke but none could stop his marking efforts up forward. The small defenders also having trouble containing Varcoe, Swan and Elliot who were all rotating forward. Melbourne’s continued efforts began to get rewarded as they finished the game with their best quarter picking up 7.4 to the Pies 3.4. A strong finish to a game the Dee’s were heavily outclassed in Nolan Bosh can be happy with the fact the side never gave up. Collingwood win by 42 in the end.

Melbourne v Western Bulldogs

Summarry
The Bulldogs are having a terrible start to their 2016 season. Currently 0 and 6 and having 60+ point losses to Hawthorn and Richmond It’s hard to see them dominating Melbourne. Koby Stevens and Tom Campbell are injured and won’t play. Melbourne coming from a 42 point loss against Collingwood will be looking to add another win on their board.

Nolan Bosh has been tireless in trying to find a Forward line-up that can score goals. Even at VFL level Melbourne forwards have been struggling to kick more than 1 to 2 goals a game. Clearly not good enough to make the mark at AFL either.

Round 7
Match Review

Low Scoring contested affair sees the Dogs stand up and get 4 points.

In a low scoring game, The Dogs found a way with the help of little man Dahlhaus up forward to steal a win away from the Hapless Melbourne side. Melbourne who lost Kennedy-Harris very early in the game with a broken leg never looked like scoring after he was taken off. The Dogs found it difficult at the other end but made the most of thier opportunities to grind their way to a 19 point victory over Melbourne.

Dogs fan celebrate as the club gets its first win of the season

It was hard to tell if the match started out with both sides playing well or Melbourne is not playing well enough. It was contested, free flowing and low scoring for the most part.

In a shocking turn of events Kennedy-Harris for Melbourne appears to be in great pain out the field. He collided hard in a marking contest and is clutching his leg. Terrible new for Melbourne as he is their leading goals scorer in a line-up that finds scoring very difficult. This could be a game changer.

The Bulldogs started to have more of the ball forward. The Dogs getting the first goals of the quarter through Dahlhaus, who was destroying the Melbourne defenders. Nolan Bosh moving three players onto him during the quarter and Dahlhaus beat all of them convincingly. He was the main reason for the Dogs attacking press early. Melbourne held to just 2 behinds as the dogs got their scoring going with 4.3 for the term. 25 points the lead to Bulldogs.

Kennedy-Harris Helped from the field after suffering a broken leg.

Melbourne finally getting their first goal 4 minutes in the second term.Dahlhaus still causing drama for Melbourne. He just couldn’t be matched up. Doing as he pleased he picked up a goal to keep the margin at 25. The Dee’s managed to hold the Dogs at bay during the term as the game was mostly centered around the Midfield battle. Melbourne stretched thin couldn’t adjust matchups much more as the Dogs looked to have the better midfield/forward line up. The loss of Kennedy-Harris was hurting Melbourne as they managed to get more inside 50 entries for the quarter but couldn’t find an avenue to score. Melbourne hanging in there trailing by 23

Melbournes defence was able to withhold a barrage of attacks by the Bulldogs midfield and little man Dahlhaus to keep the dogs scoreless 15 minutes through the quarter. Melbourne however still unable to score up forward with their entries couldn’t do anything about the margin. The Dogs finally breaking the demons defense at the 22-minute mark to score. Melbourne kicked 2 goals to 1 to reduce the Bulldogs lead down to 15 at 3 quarter time.

396842-tlsnewsportrait.jpg

Dahlhaus causing Melbourne defenders countless trouble as he kept the Dogs forward line active.

Melbournes coach Nolan Bosh setting up the Demons to be able to win the ball and create forward entries but no one up forward had the ability to translate that into goals. It’s a common theme with Melbourne so far this year. They get themselves into a position where they win the majority of the possession and forward entries but can’t get anything to show for it.

Last role of the dice for Melbourne as Nolan Bosh made his best adjustment to try and give the Dee’s scoring options. It may hurt them in the middle as he’s weakened the side in this area. Garland going into defence and Dunn moving to the forward provided instant success as Dunn scored to get the margin down to 9. The dogs having something to say answered back with a goal of their own. Another goal to the dogs at the hands of Boyd and the Dee’s chances of winning started to slip away. They just couldn’t score. Who needs defenders if the forward line does the work for you. The Dogs putting the nail in the Dee’s coffin with MaCrae getting the sealing goal. Melbourne goes down to the winless bulldogs by 19.

Melbourne won Contested possession by 22, hit outs by 5, Clearances by 5, tackle count by 36 by lost contested marking by 25 and uncontested marking by 38. This is where the dogs won the game as the Dee’s couldn’t do anything when the ball was in the air.

Disappointed Melbourne coach Nolan Bosh Post match.
I’m struggling for ideas with this side. We have the game plan, We have the opportunities. We’re in positions to win games, but We can’t do anything with it. The boys don’t know how to score. We mess around with the ball up forward. We can’t take marks. This is not a side ready to play finals. We will keep battling on, that’s one thing we can do in this team is keep fighting. We need to find someone who can stand up though when it matters

Melbourne: 0.2 – 1.5 – 3.7 – 5.1 (40)
Bulldogs: 4.3 – 5.4 – 6.4 – 9.5 (59)

BACK OFFICE UPDATE

NEWTON%20Ben.png

Melbournes Ben Newton has officially told the club he requests a trade at season end. Newton not happy with being left out of the Demons lineup so far this season under new coach Nolan Bosh. He played in 11 games last season after coming across from Port Adelaide.

Melbourne coach Nolan Bosh asked to comment
"Yes. Newton has informed us he wants to be traded. We've not made a direct decision on his future as yet. Ben is out of contract at the end of the year so it's not really an issue we can impact on too much."
"I understand he thinks he should be playing our best 22, But at the moment I haven't seen anything in his VFL form to confirm that statement."
"We've had issues up forward recently and injuries in the last 2 weeks. Ben will most likely be given a chance to impress. How he plays will determine what course of action I take with his future at Melbourne."

APRIL BOARD REVIEW
A recent appraisal of Nolan Bosh's season start has surfaced. We happen to have a copy of it to share with our supporters.

"As we stated at the beginning of the season we're expecting the club to push for finals contention this season. We feel that you have the team currently underachieving. We expect to see a reversal in fortunes starting this week."

R1 - 14 point loss to Port = Very Good
R2 - 22 point win against free = Very Good
R3 - 12 point loss to Eagles = Very Good
R4 - 19 point win against Essendon = Very Good
R5 - 42 point loss to Collingwood = Acceptable
R6 - 19 point loss to Bulldogs = Acceptable

Possibly a motivating game the board are playing as they've been contradictive given they seem happy with the overall match results. It's a tough gig being a coach at Melbourne

Until next time Melbourne fans, May your beat true

Brisbane V Melbourne

Summary:
The lions are travelling well. 4 and 2 with their bye round in round 2. They lost by the narrowest of margins to Hawthorn last week and had more than comfortable wins over Sydney, Richmond and Carlton the weeks prior. Dayne Beams and Stefan Martin have been the standout players for the lions so far this season. They’ll be without Tom Rockliff with a hamstring complaint but see themselves very much the favourite for this clash.

Melbourne, The only question you could ask is how much will they lose by. The Dee’s lost their main goal scorer (Kennedy-Harris) to a broken leg for 7 weeks. Small Forward Ben Kennedy does his achilies at training and the Demons are well short on replacement forward players. With no one currently standing up to kick the goals for the Dee’s it’s hard to see them winning many games from here. Lions easyily taking care of Melbourne

Round 8

MATCH REVIEW

Dee's Fight back too little too late

The Brisbane Lions have notched up their 5th win of the season with a 29 point victory over the Demons.
Melbournes forwards were nowhere to be seen for the most part of the contest. The Demons backmen doing all the work and defending well were let down once again by limited scoring power and opportunities. Brisbane didn't have it all their way as Melbournes defensive players were doing a fine job of controlling the Lions forward line. Perseverance and limited midfield pressure allowed the Lions to get out to 41 point lead aat the final change. Melbourne finally bringing something to the table outscored and outplayed the Lions in the final term stringing together 3 goals to one. but they well short of taking anything positive from this game. Lion win by 29

Brisbane Celebrates the 29 point over the Demons.

Brisbane started the game well, dominating possession and getting repeat inside 50 entries. Melbourne’s defence slightly stronger With Garland playing at FB and Hulett in the pocket were able to transition the ball out of defence quite easily. The Melbourne midfield, however had a more than difficult time going forward as the Lions took possession away frequently. The Lions only allowing the Demons inside 50 9 times for just the 1 behind. Melbourne giving the Lion 20 inside 50’s for 3.4.
21 Point advantage to Brisbane.

It took 17 minutes of the second term before the Demons could score their first goal. The Lions adding 2 more to their tally during that time. Nolan Bosh noticed the Lions players appeared to be zoning off and quickly changed his game tactic in the aim of getting out the back of their defence. It was showing promise and Melbourne got on top of the inside 50 count for the quarter. However, once again poor kicking netted them just 4 behinds for all the hard work.
Brisbane edging the margin out further now 29 points in the lead.

The Demons were doing a great job at stopping the lions attack holding them to just 3 scoring shots late in the third term. Melbourne continued to have the advantage of the inside 50 count but only managed 2 scoring shots. Still unable to do any better than the lions.
Brisbane found themselves with acres of space on the wing as the Demons were running a rotation. In one of the best passages of play, The Lions went coast to coast to get their second for the term. One last late goal to Lewis Taylor and Brisbane were comfortably in charge of this match. Siren sounding to end the term Melbourne trailing by 41

Allen Christensen did a hamstring during the quarter.
He wasn’t having the best of days out there on the field so it can’t really be seen as an advantage for Melbourne.

Nolan Bosh gave the Melbourne players a hell of a spray at 3 quarter time.
Melbourne responded by finally stringing 2 consecutive goals together to get the term underway. Their defensive pressure restricted Brisbane scoring opportunities to just 1.2 as the term was in its final stages. Melbourne winning the quarter kicking 3.2 but struggled to do any better up forward. Brisbane Lions winning by 29

Nolan Boshs press conference
That’s 3 losses in a row now. Your side sits 13th with just 2 wins and 6 losses. Is your season slipping away?
“It’s not slipping away. We're probably right being we deserve to be. If you can’t score you can't win. That clearly is we are at the moment. Play well defensively and our midfield is going pretty good. Up forward is Achilles heal. We just don’t have any scoring power. Kennedy-Harris was playing that role. He’s out injured for 6 more weeks. Matt Jones came in to pinch hit and got us a few. He’s actually leading our goal scorers list right now. He’s not even a first rank forward so you can see how far down we’ve had to go to find someone who can kick a goal.”

If you’re forward line is the problem can you fix it this season?
I can’t fix our Tall forward issue. That’s going to come from the trade period and end of year drafts. We have several smaller guys who can probably play up forward that we haven’t tried yet. It will definitely take something away from our midfield doing that but at this point, we need to be able to score. It doesn’t matter if your mids dominate if you can't get anything from it. So we’ll take a look at our best options up forward from here and hope we find something.”

Is your job safe?
I’ve had my April review with the board. They’ve been pleased with our results and how we’ve been trying to play. Collingwood and Footscray games just scraping through as acceptable losses. I’m not delivering the ladder position they want though and I’m expected to turn that around. We need to get a couple of wins this month to get back on track.

Melbourne: 0.1 – 1.5 – 2.7 – 5.9 (39)
Brisbane: 3.4 – 6.4 – 9.6 – 10.8 (68)

MEDICAL ROOMS
Allen Christensen, for Brisbane suffering a hamstring strain. Likely to miss just 1 week.
