I'm cheating a bit this time around. Most of it is a cut and paste from the AFL Coach screen grabs. With a little photoshop magic.
Had to give the illusion, I'm doing more work but it's actually halved my turn around time.

NOLAN BOSH
Coach Assessment

We had a good opening term in terms of scoring shots. 9 to 4 and we had a 25 point lead at quarter time. We couldn't dominate the possession in the middle of the ground and it was pretty even but tilted slightly in favour of North Melbourne which wasn't pleasing. Goldstein dominating the hitouts early and we're probably going to have to follow him around all day. Scoring is coming easy so If we can keep it up we should be able to get a further lead in the second term.

We rectified some of the problems we were having with midfield possession and got up the clearance stats and evened up the hitouts which was good to see. Defensively we lasped a bit and couldn't get our set up right. North sending an extra man back in our forward line gave us the extra number in defence but we failed to take advantage of it and still gave away too much space. North picked up their first goal of the game and another 2 during that quarter. Pleased with the fact we only allowed them 3 scoring shots but it's a shame they were all goals. We're still going well up forward. finishing off ok with another 4 goal term to keep the lead edging out in our favour. North are trying to run the ball alot so we need to look at shutting that down and using it against them in the third.

Our pressure was pretty good around the ball again during the third term. We let the ball get out of our attacking 50 a little too easily that term which I'll need to adress but otherwise there isn't much to change. We've had all the scoring but inacuracy is creeping back in and we're filing to put North away.
Suprisingly Oscar McDonald is our leading goal scorer so far as he's been used to cover Defensive and Forward rotations. He's kicked 3 goals and We might give him a longer stint up forward in the final term to see what he can do. Will have to reshape our structure to get it done but I don't we'll suffer from it.
about an 8 goal lead to play with.

I'm not sure what hapened in the last term but we completley shut down and the whole team nearly went to sleep. I can't remember the last game where we were kept goalless in a quarter. I can tell you I wouldn't have been happy and today is no exception. It may have been the McDonald move to the forward line that unsettled them but we had ample inside 50's for the quarter but wasted the possessions and no one wanted to have a shot it seemed. That effort has soured the win for us. What could have been a great win will now lead to some questions and trying to work out what broke down. Our defence was still strong only allowing 2 goals to North. Look It's another win. We've now gone 3 in a row and off to a good start.
Still getting the job done but we haven't nailed the perfect game yet.

Keeping a close eye on those Crows this season. They better be playing finals footy
The board wants a grand final appearance.
Supporters expectations are close to finals

They had a pretty poor trade/draft period. didn't fill their required needs much at all.
Only 1 listed ruckman at 62 OA
Josh Jenkins is doubling as ruckman and key forward

Not a great openning term for the side. Missed a couple of shots with kicks out on the full (Collingwood also missed 2 the same way)
We got away well and and had kicked the openning 2 goals but failed to sustain the pressure for the quarter. We won all the major key stats yet the Pies are just 2 points behind us. Our midfielders are winning the ball well but we're allowing to get out of our forward half to easy and their scoring on rebound attempts. Need to try and take some pressure of our defenders in the second term and focus on trapping it in our forward half.

We did a bit better in the second term. Stopped their defensive rebound attacks by more than half wich was good. We messed around in the forward line a little too much. silly passes when we could have had shots on goal. our match stats were very much on par with our first quarter so it's pleasing that we could maintain our effort. If we weren't giving away so many free kicks (17 to half time) I doubt the Pies would be in the position they are just 11 points behind.
Need to clean that part of the game up. They lost T.Langdon to injury and Levi Greenwood came down into defense. He's caused us some issues and became the leading possession winner that quarter with his defensive work.

Pretty much exactly what we wanted to execute in the third quarter. Levi Greenwood is still hurting us in taking away possession but he's not really damaging us in term of it's efectiveness so we're letting that go. 22 inside 50's for the quarter and we're keeping the ball around our forward half for longer which is exactly what we wanted. Mathew Kreuzer kicked 3 goals in the quarter and dominated Brown when we were able to give him space. We're forcing the pies to defend in the air up forward with our crumbers playing up the ground and running back in on forward entries. getting some good rewards for that style of play but I'm not sure how much longer the Pies will let us do it. Asking the boys to lift for Nathan Jones 250th game in the final quarter and see if we can stick the knife in this Collingwood side and win big.

I wasn't happy with our final term. We still managed 6 scoring shots but could add 2 goals. We also allowed the Pies to get 4 scoring shots off and they really did apply pressure and try to win the quarter. We lost some of our forward control and gave too many easy easy transitions out of attack. We were under enough pressure in defence I was forced to send a spare man down there to try and take back control of the ball. Levi was outstanding in defence for the Pies. We couldn't get him to follow any one up the ground to try and take him out of the play. Seemed to do what he liked and he cut off our attacks without any pressure. It would have been nice to really hurt the Pies with a big win. but we'll take the 4 points and a 48 point victory.

Oscar McDonald has received Melbourne's second nomination
(in back to back to weeks) for the NAB Rising Star Award for round 4.
While many feel his round 3 performance was far better as he was able to kick 3 goals.
His defensive work against Collingwood was quite good for a player of limited experience with just 8 games under his belt in 4 seasons.

The Tigers were quiet during the offseason with the only aquisition being Harrison Wigg. Wigg who was listed with Adelaide in 2016 was shipped off to Essendon at the end of the season and De-Listed by them at the end of 2017. He's now at his 3rd club and is still yet to play his first AFL game.
Richmond delisted 5, including talented player Corey Ellis which was surpising to see.
Adelaide jumping to pick him up which has the lead to questions if Hardwick had anything to do with Corey moving states.
Richmond are expected to be a top 4 side and are currently underperforming under new coach Frank Woodall, who took over duties after Damien Hardwick left to take on the Adelaide Crows senior coach role.
Frank, an unknown coach to many in the football world has his hands full in his first season to deliver on the expectations.

Coach Assessment

Wow. That was an intense quarter. Richmond came out hard and fast and picked up 3 goals within 7 minutes and the pill hadn't even touched the hands of our forwards. We had to re-adjust our gameplan to withstand the Tigers surge and thankfully we slowed them down without having to have to make many personnel adjustments. Richmond still wanted to go toe to toe so once I felt like we had evened things up the boys got on top and we surged back with a vengeance. We kicked 7 unanswered goals and only allowed 2 behinds for the rest of the quarter. Really pleased with our recovery but we have to be wary of a Tiger fightback. They look a little worn out at the end of the term. We'll keep an eye on that and hope they spend their tickets by 3 quarter time and we can run out better. Long way to go yet.
24 points up at quarter time.

Started fast and furious again in the second term. What was good is that we didn't allow the Tigers to score as easily as the did in the first term. We lost Neville Jetta to a broken leg about 8 minutes in. That could prove costly as he's been the only man to stop Sam Lloyd on our list and he's a very damaging player for Richmond. It proved accurate as moments after Neville was taken from the field Lloyd got more involved in the play and the Tigers added another 3 goals rather quickly. We were doing ok with our inside 50 entries but it was getting harder to score as their defence was lifting. We pushed on and worked hard to score 4 goals. Mathew Wright getting amongst the game really lifted in the term along with Kreuzer who kicked 2 of our goals in the second.Richmond is keeping us honest but we're doing ok.
33 point lead.

We failed to find a way to break free of the Tigers and increase our margin further. Sam Lloyd continued to cause headaches Daniel Talia was shifted to take him on wich left us vulnerable in defence with both McDonalds having to carry the load. We were managing to keep them honest and it was looking like we could get through without a loss as we managed to kick a couple of goals further clear. It turned on us towards the tail end of the term as Griffiths was able to capitalise on our weaker defender and get back to back goals. Hampson caught us out during a position change and the Tigers got something going. We let them add 6 goals in that term and our margin dropped back down to 22 points. We're losing the midfield battle after having control in the first quarter. Need to find something extra to stop this from turning ugly.

We did exactly what we needed to do. get out there and show intent and we did that by kicking 4 quick unanswered goals. Richmond didn't want to roll over and they continued to press for forward entries of their own but our defenders were able to withstand most of their attacks.Midway through the last we could tell the Tigers had run out of puff and we had plenty of legs left. We kept on hitting them hard and kicked another 2 goals to seal the game. Richmond could only manage 1 goal in the final term and it's a great result for the boys to be able to rally, withstand the pressure and deliver a 4 quarter game.

Credit to the Tigers outfit. They were a challenge. I felt we played close to our best footy and they gave us a run for 3 quarters.

Sorry No Ladder for Round 5
I must have overridden my snapshot with a different round. (A few games ahead of the posted story so far)

All you need to know is that Melbourne was still on top after round 5. ;)

Geelong
Finished 9th in 2017 3 games outside of 8th placed Hawthorn.

They went into the offseason delisting 4 players who were yet to play a senior game
Ryan Gardiner - Calvin Solly - Scott Treleaven - Jacob Parkins

They Traded R.Stanley to Carlton for D.Gorringe (RUCK) and Pick 28 to Fremantle for M.Barlow (O-MID)
and then picked up 2016 draftee B.Abbott (DEF) in the pre-season draft

It's too early to tell at this point if they've made a gain from their off-season action. As it stands right now, they're in touch with the top 8.
Percentage the only thing keeping them out and they'll be looking for a home game win over Melbourne to give them a good shot of getting in.
Patrick Dangerfield who suffered a major knee injury towards the closing stages of the 2017 season and is still a big loss.
He could return to play in the finals series if required however without a pre-season and very limited game time in almost a year.
You'd have to wonder if he would add to the side or be a burden.

Conditions for the match are pretty terrible. Geelong started ferociously and kicked off 3 quick goals and it was looking much the same as the Richmond game a few weeks ago.Blicavs was damaging in the pocket and Menzel was proving to be a handfull. We managed to work out way back into the contest thanks to Jack Darling getting off to a flier and kicking 3 goals but the Cats wouldn't let up. We've got the lead at the change but are under immense pressure across the ground. Need to lift in the middle and work harder in defense.
5 point lead

We got away to a better start in the second term.Jack Darling kicked another 2 goals for us and we started to look more composed and settled across the ground. This was only to last the opening 10 minutes before the Cats lifted again and began to threaten our defense with multiple entries. We've done a good job of restricting Menzel this quarter. Gibbs having to slot back in defense to take him on and that extra pressure forced the Cats to rush their kicks as space became hard to find. We kept them to 1.3 and kicked 4.4 ourselves which was reward the effort I had asked them to give during the quarter-time huddle.
Looking for more of the same
24 point lead.

The Cats made us work hard for our goals in the third term. It wasn't clear cut who had the advantage and we had to continuously move players around to counter act the Geelong changes in shutting us down. They dropped a spare back in defense and it caused some issues trying to get clear space to mark inside 50. The boys worked hard including Darling who had now kicked 7 goals for the match to grind out 3 goals in the quarter. We gave away some cheap transition play to the Cats but were able to stifle them in defense again giving up just 2 goals for the quarter. It's really tough out there and I hope we enough tickets left to run this game out. Geelong didn't look at all tired so we need to be wary of an all out attacking final term.
30 point lead.

Jack Crisp has done an AC joint and we had to get him out of the game 6 minutes into the final term.
We lifted our intensity and class out there on the field after the injury. We smothered the Geelong's forwards and our midfielders took over allowing us to get constant repeat inside 50 entries. We put on 5.2 in the final term and didn't have to rely on Jack kicking them as we mostly ran them in from the middle and kicked over the top. Gibbs did a good job slowing caddy down who still managed 33 disposals. but with him, Menzel, Motlop and Joel Selwood kept quiet we took the game away from the Cats and finished the game with true grit and determination.
Another challenging contest, but we prevailed.
48 point win
