Will be interesting to see if we can keep operating in the black once the $3-$4m annual pokies profit is removed.
Quote from PJ and Barlett today is that the pokies are worth $2mil to our bottom line. They're saying, effectively, that we need to grow our income streams by 10%...by 2022.

Given typically that a business wants to grow by 3% a year to keep up with inflation, that means we're aiming for a growth target of 5% per year. It's big, but it's not unreasonable, particularly given that the bulk of that hit will come in 2022, and we'll have financial incomes from the sale of the Bentleigh club (as we have received from Leighoak).

Not to mention there's the question of what the club will do with the $11mil...could we finally have a dedicated facility on the table?

The figures I saw were that we made a $3.7m PROFIT out of gaming last year, our revenue was around $10m.

You have to remember this doesn't exist in a vacuum either, were not just talking about revenue and profits to satisfy dividends to investors. We compete in an arms race with other clubs and we are already behind the 8 ball. So we don't just need to replace the pokies revenue, we need to replace that in addition to finding other profit-making revenue streams.

If a club drops their pokies.
The people were apparently doing good by will just go elsewhere and the money going to a for profit company which only cares about money"

Im happy for clubs being involved in gaming as at least the money can indirectly go back to the community through the football clubs.

The AFL has a 2.6 billion media deal. If it is such a bloated pig that it needs to dip into old folks' pensions then the problem isn't on the revenue side. Poker machines aren't football revenue. They never had a place in the game.

Don't mind this at all but does MFC and the other clubs have a suitable plan for getting money into the club other than an AFL grant?

Cant take your hand out of one pie and place it in another.
We already have threads discussing this

Richmond are running a number of community sports and aquatic centres, and profits from these are expected to over take our pokies numbers soon

Gws have just announced they are going to start managing child care facilities in western sydney

Bulldogs have their partnership with Vic Uni to support their sport science courses. Richmond has also started offering cert 3 courses in conjunction with swinburne

They are legal. No one is forcing old folks to pump their pensions into computers designed to take their money. If people are dumb enough to do that I'd be happy for MFC to take their money instead of it going to Woolworths or Crown.

I'm wondering where the discrepancy comes in between those numbers and what was quoted yesterday then.

My guess is yesterday was a 100% machine number, excluding food, booze (not sure pub keno or tab)
Ah. Reports today suggest that the MFC won't sell the Bentleigh Club in 2022 but will just remove the pokies so that fits.

Apparently the Leighoak machines are/were the most profitable in the league too.

Ok so you're just a hypocrite
Its easy to get defensive about it, but pokies are a whole different animal to TAB, alcohol etc. They are designed to con people to keep spending. They are a psychological con job. The pokies dont care about the mass of people who spend a few $$ on occasion. They make their real money out of the few addicted people who lose everything. Their families & work suffers. Or they lose pensions, house etc etc.
Gambling addiction is bad enough but pokies are designed to exploit just that problem.

I used to live up the road from leighoak, tbh its location makes it only viable as a pokies venue, so id be surprised if that gets run as a pub.

Bentleigh i agree is a possibility, but i expect someone to come in and offer to buy pub and pokies at that locale

So Melbourne get a conscious and seek praise by announcing they will get rid of their pokie machines......in 2022.

So this self loathing of gaining income from these poor sods who cant control their pokie cravings only applies from 2022? If they cant get rid of the machines now:
- Why not unplug each machine they own and get rid of them in 2022?
- Why not give the net profit from these pokie machines to a charity that deals with problem gamblers?

Their conscious mustn't feel to bad if they want to take the profits up to 2022

Name calling? Oh wait look who Im talking to.
Not at all.
I believe that pokies are worse than all those and they dont actually have any other purpose than to fleece money.
Even sports betting has the sporting element.

Yes that's exactly the point - YOU believe, ie you are placing subjective values on what is moral or not. Fact is alcohol, gambling and junk food all have adverse impacts on society yet you are only singling out pokies you have a personal dislike for them. Pretty much every product in our society is created with the goal of fleecing money from people, that's capitalism. People are still free to decide who they give their money too though.

Again that is just applying a subjective value on morality. People do that when they need to justify a hypocritical stance ie profiting from gambling, alcohol, junk food is OK (even though all result in terrible adverse impacts on society and prey on poorer communities) but profiting from pokies is not OK.

They do but they have other applications.

Pokies have one thing and on thing only. To fleece money from the poor on the off chance they are lucky enough to win a few bucks.

Its not even random and depends on how "nice" the owners of said machine are because they can change the settings.

At least everything else you mentioned wether it be food or drink or sports betting have an actual alteria motive other than fleecing you of your hard earned and actually give you something for your payment.

They are a cancer on society. Full stop.

All the things you are adding have a payoff or product you get from it.

Pokies do not.

Are clubs directly profiting from alcohol or junk food like teams are with pokies though?

Alcohol contributes to depression, junk food causes all sorts of issues like heart disease, cancer etc Gambling also preys on problem gamblers.

Sorry I'm not buying your subjective morality.
