I know mergers are off and all but....

If Joe pulls the pin, what would Melbourne fans think of an alliance with Norwood. I seem to recall Melbourne previously being called the redlegs anyway. They would play Port & the Crows twice and could play the "Home" fixtures of these games in Adelaide, thereby ensuring huge gate receipts.

I am sure that if it were a formal alliance, endorsed by the Norwood Football club then plenty of now Crow (I assume there are no Port) Norwood supporters may jump ship...particularly if they also played say the home game against Freo & West Coast in Adelaide as well (therefore 5 or 6 games a year).

Norwood, last time I checked anyway, had plenty of cash they could tip into the equation.

To me, this seems like a very minimalist way to merge, without losing your colours, name, or having to relocate.

What do you think ?

I go for the Redlegs in the SANFL because of the red and the blue and Melbourne's "second nickname"is the Redlegs. But I don't think it will work in South Australia because they would still be a Victorian Team.

Norwood have previously been known as the Demons, their colours are a direct result of Lou Suhard the well known Melbourne jeweller who was recruited by Norwood ( amongst a number of Victorian recruits by Norwood ) . It was Lou who suggested Norwood play in the red and blue strip. The Eastern men as they were often called have never changed colours the were admitted into the SAFA in 1878.

Norwwod and the SACA just keep plugging away don't they? Norwood I suspect would have to kick in the license and pay off the debt and basically be sodomised by a mob of Victorian losers. A profession for which Norwood is more than qualified, so good luck to them. Thanks for pointing out the Victorian Norwood connection PA - it was one of the reasons Norwood did so well back in the last century, they may have even won consecutive flags back in the days when the played Harrow, didn't play finals and didn't count behinds - until after the match anyway.

I cant blame either.

firstly the SACA. I would love to see league football at the highest level back at Adelaide oval. I remember as a kid and into my late twenties the atmosphere was unparalleled at Adelaide oval, of course since the demise of the SANFL, 1990 onwards games at the oval are rather rural in atmosphere and lack any on field zest.

Norwood on the other hand, have all the facilities any of the suburban VFL clubs had, and the money and the desire, but nobody wants to play footy with them in Victoria... they can only get a game in the SANFL. ...they played their cards...

Norwood won 6 pennants in a row from 1878, due mainly to their Victorian recruits and Norwoods ability to be able to lure players from the other clubs in Adelaide at the time especially South Adelaide for good money...Other clubs being unable to compete with Norwoods resources...

It is interesting to note the club that brought a halt to Norwoods dominance of the SAFA were none other than Port Adelaide who procured the premiership at Norwoods expense in 1884. Port Adelaides first ever premiership.

South Adelaide were the other club that dominated the late 1800's with Port winning a further two premierships before the turn of the century.

1890 where they also secured the " Championship of Australia" by beating South Melbourne for the title at their challenge.

1897 their last premiership in the Magenta and Blue colours.

The only merger I would like to see the Demons make is with Melbourne Storm (because I love rugby league as well) (LOL)
But forget it guys, Melbourne Demons will never talk mergers again, if I have my way.
Melbourne City needs a team called Melbourne and we will stay here forever, other teams can merge if they want to.
Go Demons
Go Melbourne Storm

okay well here we go, as i am a member of both clubs and have been for all the 19 years of my short and illustrious life, i just wanna say this.
Norwood r in too strong a financial case t oenter into something like that, and they dont wanna go into the afl anyway, and second of all THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB ARE NOT GOING TO MERGE WITH ANYBODY. EVER!!! (Sorry Ms Storm not even melbourne storm)

At the moment the MFC are building up a strong supporter base, and trying to get to a position, where in about 10 years time we will be able to stand alone and be a powerhouse of the AFL. not just on the field but off it too.

So sorry to whoever started this. the merger aint gonna happen.

dee_girl 19,

Part of Norwoods charter is to play in the highest league possible.
The Norwood football club will do all within its power ,resources and influence to aquire an AFL license.

I have a "Redlegs review" Norwoods official publication from several years ago that indicates Norwoods stance on an AFL license. That shows Norwoods public stance on the AFL issue. The 'behind the scenes' stance is one of burning desire to field an AFL team.

The Norwood Football club will not lay down on this one and whether it be next year or in 20 years they will continue to exhaust every option and tenuous link to gaining an AFL license.
