Took the kids and the mrs. Dropped 300 bucks in an instant. Am now at home reeling at what a huge rip off it is, but moreso, the money that is being made by the social misfit carnies that run an work the show...would love to never go again but the kids love it.

Yeah, nowadays I can see why my parents didn't enjoy it near as much as I did.

I live in the country now and it's a bit more serious for them, as there's a lot of competitions and other farm related things that go on. But if you're not involved in that, it's not really that great.

Have avoided every time my mates want to go as a group. Horrible idea, and those that fall for it are just as dumb as the carnies. Sorry!

Went to the Dandenong show once with my parents when i was younger. It was on the same day as the bouncing castle when it took off and some kids fell off while it was up in the air. And i think i went again with a few mates when i was 15/16, but that was it. Never been to the Melbourne show, every year you hear how it's a strain on the pocket. How much is everything these days? Showbags, rides, food, parking, entrance etc...

Family ticket after 2pm with racv card $60.00
Car parking $20.00
Rides $8.00
Show bags minimum $15.00 but all the ones my kids wanted were $22.00 minimum
Food-think ethihad prices.

So for a family with 3 kids- 3 rides each and 2 showboats- a littl bit of food and a coke.... You're looking at about 400
Bucks easy.

Geelong show is coming up in a little under a month. Not as big a waste of money as the Melbourne show, but it's close.

Was taken to the Show as a small child in the early 60s

Just remember lots of crowds and walking

Back then showbags were FREE because they contained samples of products to try

The bags became an industry in the 70s

My mum used to offer my brother and I back in the day either $50 each or go to the royal (adelaide) show - We took the $50, and mum saved money -

During high school, I was in the school concert band and we used to play at the royal show each year, so for four years as a teenager I went because we got free entry - once that gig was up I have never even contemplated going to the show and will not be taking my kids (if I have any) to any such place... they should expect the $50 bribe instead...

Remembering $50 bribe for possible future children :thumbsu:

I went until about the age of 12, when I actually had a bit of money and could buy my own lollies - I stopped. Imagine its the same for most people.

i sometimes go with the missus to check out the cake decorating which is bloody amazing, buy an obligatory showbag and regale her of the time i attended the show on acid. I've never looked at a toy story or barbie showbag the same since...

OP...did the same about 3 years ago. I sooked the whole time watching my hard earned cas go down the drain on what amounted to total plastic shit.

I think the problem in Melb is that we dont have a good theme park and the Show is what we get woopee doooed about.

I would rather have given my kid $300 and go sick in Big W on toys rather than ever go to that trash again.

Or you could just say no, and you can spend the $50*X amount of kids... ;)
True. But when they head off to school and every other kid is talking about the show, my kids would be able to be comforted by their small fortune :p

Biggest waste of money. Ridiculous prices for parking, entry and anything you want to do inside. Won't ever go again if I could avoid it. Would rather go to the pub, have a parma/steak and have a good old fashioned punt

All my mates strongly advised me not to go there last year, and yet I still went. Can safely say I won't be making the same mistake this year. Crap parking, absolutely terrible venue, and stuff all in the way of decent rides/attractions.
As for the Melbourne show, not bad if you don't mind the $5 buckets of soggy chips, the $9 dodgem rides that last one song (this is actually true), mile-long queues for everything, and the crowds. I did score one bargain there on Wednesday though- 8 packets of Vegie chips for $10.

What are veggie chips?
