B - Garland Frawley Bennell

HF - Trengove Watts Sylvia
F - Jurrah Howe Green
R - Jamar Moloney Scully

IC - Bail Martin Petterd Woneamirri

Emer - Gysberts Tapscott Bartram
Best effort on this page of the thread at least. I can't believe how many have just written off Rivers, it's crazy.

Green and Davey will maintain part of our best 22 if they have a big preseason and get over their psychological deficiencies. Wona probably is our best crumbing forward and we need one at least!

Grimes, Blease and Bennell seem to be the leading 3 for the small defensive spots. I think they just have Tapscott and Bartram covered.

The midfield - Jones, Moloney, Davey, McKenzie, Scully, Trengove, Bail picks itself, which is very disappointing. Besides Gysberts, Bartram as a back up tagger and Morton there isn't a lot of depth there. After that it's Jetta and Evans or shifting a defender or forward in.

There's certainly a place for Green and Rivers there, it's just pending a few things over the summer. I think Davey's best position is as a small forward and he should play there until Maric proves himself to be consistently adequate.

I like Grimes in the centre, and maybe rotating with Jones, Petterd, Gysberts and Bail if he's lacking fitness wise. Dunn and Bate are on the edge of the team, and it will be interesting to see how Gawn and Fitz come along. Will be fantastic if we can develop as strong a depth as it looks we might.

for round 1 i'd be fine with:

B: Tapscott - Frawley - Rivers
HB: Grimes - Garland - Davey
C: Blease - Moloney - Jones
HF: Howe - Watts - Sylvia
F: Jurrah - Green - Petterd
Foll: Jamar - Trengove - McKenzie
I/C: Bartram - Gysberts - Martin
Sub: Bennell
Emerg: Morton - Gawn - whichever mid we pick with #12 or #14

gotta say, it's really hard to know what to do with grimes, davey, green and bartram in particular.

viney has shown, thus far, that he prefers bartram way away from the backline - i actually think he's our 'best' small in terms of playing a clamp-down role. but as we all know, his kicking is woeful. so far in his tenure, viney has preferred him in the midfield playing on the best oppo mid, rather than behind the ball, where bennell, tapscott, and occasionally blease have played the small defender role. i think tapscott has the makings of a josh hunt. i'd love to see someone like jacob surjan recruited, but his kicking is truthfully no better than bartram's, so you'd have to query the point. tenacious defender tho.

grimes you want on-ball, but every time he's gone there he's injured himself in some way or another. is he better off attacking behind the ball?

the problem with davey is that this year we've seen him coming back from a serious leg break, then battling form and confidence, then a knee injury, then coming back, then the same issues of form and confidence. is he better off ahead of the ball or behind it or on it? i honestly no longer have any idea, so i've stuck him in at half-back as a last measure sort of thing.

green i still think is better off around the play, or up around it and pushing forward, but we have about three other players who play that role too - sylvia, howe and petterd, not to mention dunn or maric. so i guess he's full forward, swapping up and back from the cage as a result. i dunno. our forward line doesn't fill me with a great deal of confidence - too many mids rather than powerful forwards.

the same is true of petterd - i think he's far better running up from half-forward to present to the kicker, but he - along with wonna - is one of few players who puts defensive pressure on inside 50.

in truth the line-up will be more like this, i think, utilising the basic 22 i've outlined above:

Lock down defenders: Tapscott - Frawley - Rivers - Garland - Bennell
Creative defenders: Grimes - Davey - Blease - Garland - Frawley - Bennell
Loose man back: Blease - Davey - Watts
Grunt mids: Moloney - Jones - Sylvia - McKenzie - Bartram - Jamar
Running mids who play the transition: Trengove - Gysberts - Sylvia - Davey - Martin - Bennell
Push up forwards: Watts - Howe - Sylvia - Green - Petterd
Inside 50 roamers: Jurrah - Petterd - Bennell - Davey

as we know, there's no such thing as a traditional 6 man defence, 6 man forward line these days. most teams barely even play 4 man forward lines these days.

With the addition of Clark:

HB: Grimes Rivers Blease
C: Trengove Jones McKenzie
HF: Watts Clark Davey
F: Jurrah Green Petterd
R: Jamar Moloney Sylvia

I/C: Tapscott Martin Bail Gysberts

E: Howe Bartram Wonna Macdonald

Assumes that Maric, Bate and Warnock are gone as well.

Comments:
Green: He will play, and he will start on-field - anyone putting him as a bench or emergency is taking the piss. Hoping Green can get back to 2010 form at FF.

Blease/Macdonald: We are still a young side, so Macdonald may get the nod here...

I only saw Clark play once in 2011 (against the Dees), and he destroyed us roaming around the 50m arc...you reckon he's best suited to FF?
No point having a 200cm, 105kg KPP roaming the 50 arc. Let Watts and Petterd do that.

Forward line is far too top heavy and that back line would get destroyed by any forward line.

Jeremy Howe has to be in the forward line with Clark now. Can you imagine him one out with 3rd or 4th best defender. Ridiculous

Players who will benefit from the signing of Mitch Clark : Green, Howe, Watts, Petterd, insert small forward

Players who lose out: Newton. Bate, Dunn

Still got some depth with Bartram, Bate, Bennell, Campbell, Dunn, Jetta, Macdonald, Maric, Morton, Warnock and Wonaeamirri all having a fair bit of experience at senior level. While the younger brigade includes Cook, Davis, Evans, Fitzpatrick, Gawn, Johnston, Lawrence, McDonald, McNamara, Nicholson, Spencer and Strauss.

I think that this is a pretty accurate representation of the team. Perhaps switching Davey* with Bail and we'll be fine.

* = at his best.

I have the feeling that McNamara will be delisted - Clark coming might mean Spencer could get the chop as well.

Have to agree with this line up. Gets me very excited seeing that on paper, looks dangerous. Our spine has gotten a major boost.

Garland
Frawley
Moloney
Watts
Clark

A nice little crumbing forward would be an awesome addition. Someone who play the role that Garlett and Betts do at Carlton would be amazing. Wonaeamirri has the potential for that, hope Misson and Craig can sort his body issues and get him playing regular footy in 2012. Bennell or Jetta could fill this role as well, but both aren't forwards. Lawrence could be our answer for this...

From what I've read Ahmed Saad plays this role and would have been a great addition to the side, but thats not going to happen. We should target this kind of player in the draft.

This too... :thumbsd::thumbsd:

The team desperately needs either Wona or Maric to step up.

WC have cox, nat and lynch, edit Kennedy
CW had Jolly Brown with both Dawes and Cloke inside 50
Cats have Ottens, Hawkins and West and Podsiadely(all in grandfinal side)
Hawks Buddy, Roughy Hale and Bailey

Does this just make us catch up and straighten up, i was originally concerned for Martin but he can play all 3 key positions imo

Every top 4 side from last season had 1 ruck 2 tall forwards and one versatile ruck

Edit - Jamar, Martin, Clark and a Watts

I'd say Martin is versatile enough to stay in the team. Mitch isn't going to play as a ruckman, he's not getting paid all this money to ruck.

West Coast regularly had all of Cox, NicNat, Lynch, Kennedy and Darling in their team this year and they got to a prelim.

Edit - Beat me to it with the West Coast example Mentor!

Mt attempt,

B Bartram - Frawley - Rivers
HB Mcdonald - Garland - Grimes
C Mckenzie - Jones - Sylvia
HF Howe - Watts -Green
F Davey -Clark - Jurrah
R Jamar - Moloney - Trengove

INT Petterd - Tapscott, Gysberts, Martin

DEPTH Morton, Bail, Evans, Nicholson, Strauss, Bennell

Not so bad
