JJJ are running on show next week about the best Melbourne songs of all time(i.e songs about Melbourne). They did a similar show on Sydney last year which was pretty good but I am tippin the Melbourne one will be heaps better. Anyone got any songs about Melbourne they can suggest both well known and obscure.
To start the ball rolling here are five:

Under the Clocks - WPA

Leaps and Bounds - Paul Kelly

Mourningtown Ride - TISM

Grey Skies over Collingwood - WPA

The Mordiallic Road Duplicator - TISM

"From St Kilda to Kings Cross" Paul Kelly - I'll give you all of Sydney Harbour....all that land and all that water....for that one sweet Esplanade"

some song about "My Brown Yarra" by someone (weddings parties anything ?"

Happy Birthday Helen- famously taken off by the Late Show and renamed "just another Melbourne cliche"

Also Mr Big Mouth by Hunters which was about Jeff Kennet I know but close enough.

"Here comes the rain again" - Eurythmics

"We gotta get out of this place" - Angels

"Highway to Hell" - AC/DC

"Ghost Town" - The Specials

"Why does it always rain on me" - Travis

Love that song. Actually, Things Of Stone and Wood's whole first album 'The Yearning' was very Melbourne-based, they have one song called 'Heidelberg' on there and another, 'Barkly Street' as well as 'Happy Birthday Helen'.

D-Gen's 'Got No More Melbourne Cliches' would be my favourite, along with TISM's 'Mourningtown Ride'.

Question - could the original 'Morningtown Ride' have been a reference to Melbourne? I can't even remember who sang it.

Mobbenfuhrer,

I think original was done by the Seekers but i dont think it was about Melbourne. I would have to agree that it is an absolute classic by TISM.

Actually I think you will find that it is. It refers to Morningtown as opposed to Mornington but I read an interview with the frumpy woman from the seekers who said it was.
