Great news this... around 5,000 tickets left.

I can't wait for some on here to tell us that a sell-out = unpopular sporting event

Origin III Tickets Going Fast

Friday, June 9, 2006 - 6:31 PM
Rugby League is on the verge of selling out Melbourne’s Telstra Dome for the third Harvey Norman State of Origin game on July 5 and fans are now being urged to book their tickets as soon as possible.
Less than 5,000 seats remain available for Origin’s first Melbourne outing in almost a decade - and that’s with Origin two in Brisbane still a week away.

While there’s still time to book a seat, fans are being urged to make sure of their place at the match with strong sales still being recorded each day.

The uptake signals the excitement around Origin’s return to Melbourne in what has been a huge sporting year for Victoria.
ARL Chairman, Colin Love, said the league was looking forward to bringing State of Origin back to Melbourne.
“Origin 3 will be more than a great spectacle, it will go down as a must-attend event on Melbourne’s sporting calendar,” says Love.

“Whether it proves to be the series decider or the battle to avoid a clean sweep in the series, it is a match that is going to be high in emotion and skill.
“The way the Melbourne public have supported its return will make it a night to remember for everyone.”
The 2006 game will be the first State of Origin clash in Victoria since 1997 when the New South Wales Blues narrowly defeated the Queensland Maroons at the MCG.

Prior to that, Queensland won at the MCG in 1995, while the Blues took the points in a 1994 match that attracted more than 87,000 spectators (what was then a record Origin crowd and which is still the second biggest Origin crowd behind Telstra Stadium’s 88,336 in 1999).

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster on 1300136122 or on line through www.ticketmaster.com.au.

Of course it will sell out...

1. Melbourne is Australia's sporting capital
2. this is Rugby Leagues biggest game of the season
3. nothing else to compete with.

Good news for RL...

Melbourne is probably the only major 1st world city on the planet without a proper rectangualr field stadium... hardly a sporting capital by any stretch of the imagination.

RL has quite a few big games in Oz this year ... SOO, GF and Tri-Nations Final

Wether or not Melbourne is Australia's 'sporting capital' is debatable but one myth that the assured sell-out will bust is the fact that Melburnians won't support all sports and it proves that rugby league is not as 'forbidden' as some may have you think.

The sell-out is such a massive thing for rugby league in Victoria and now the Victorians get a Tri-Nations match this year that will, by all accounts, sell really well especially considering the success of the Origin move to Melbourne.

the first SOO match held in Melbourne got over 87,000 and the first Bledisloe Cup match in Melbourne got 90,000. Melbourne does support other sports, even if it doesn't follow the club side as much.

A bit like Swans games in Sydney, its more of an "event" to Melburnians rather than a sporting contest. And, of course, plenty will be there from NSW and Qld.

Good luck to the NRL though, personally Origin is about the only time I find league at all entertaining on a regular basis.

There is plans for a rectangular field for the Storm and Melbourne Victory isn't there?

-SOO
-Tri-nations final
-Car Racing
-Boxing day test match
-Golf

to name a few...

We also have big days on the AFL celander such as Anzac Day which attracts over 90,000 people annualy and the Queens Birthday weekend, which on monday will attract a huge crowd...:thumbsu:

Trust me there is no sport in Melbourne thats forbiddon, we turn up in numbers to any event...look at the Australia v Greece match! It's just the NRL that dosn't generate much interest down here...

To send a State of Origin match down to Melbourne is nothing short of a disgrace.

They clearly don't like League, so why should they get to host one of our premier events????????? The NSW public has been dudded.
