Elwood, i've lived in a few different parts of Melbourne (Cheltenham, Richmond, Brunswick, Camberwell) and finally settled here and it's a great spot. You'll be able to find a nice 2 bedroom apartment for $400. My favourite part about it is that it's so close to the St Kilda, CBD and has easy public transport or road access to Richmond but at the same time it's residential streets are really quiet.

Maybe somebody knows the going rate for a unit/town house in the towers at Docklands. I'd think 400 a week you'd get in. 2 young studs surrounded by Asian students could be fun for 6 months or a year until you find the burb you like.

I'd rather live 20 k's further out in luxury, than in some noisy, tiny box.

I know a decaf latte with a twist of lemon drinker when I see one.

Thanks alot for all the insight guys. We are both late twenties and single so we will go out a bit but not like every night. And yeah probably wont have a car at least at first. Ive only been to melbourne once but loved it. Perth is great too but just want a change and there is plenty of jobs over there as ive been keeping an eye out. I was looking at rentals in east malvern and hawthorn what are those like?
Where do you normally like to go out on the weekends? i.e. Subi/Claremont, Northbridge, Mt Lawley, Leederville, Freo etc etc. A lot of the areas that have been already mentioned by others are sort of larger versions of the above.

Taking a stab in the dark though, someone of your age group would probably have an awesome time living in Fitzroy (try to get as close to Brunswick St as you can but stay north of the commission flats - you'll know them when you see them on google maps). Fitzroy is good fun, very laid back and close to the CBD which is also great fun.

If you prefer more upmarket then stay on the south-east side of town but you'll get less for your $400 per week and frankly it's not much more fun over there.

Whilst I take your point, there's little reason to move from Perth to somewhere like Melbourne and then live in a house just like all the houses in Perth in a suburb just like all the suburbs in Perth. Compared to Perth, the weather in Melbourne is total crap, so to make up for it you need to experience the inner-city lifestyle that just isn't the same in Perth.

Grew up in the burbs-Melton and Werribee for about 15 years and have settled in Elwood after being away from Melbourne for close to 20 years.

Lifestyle, leafy street, quiet, friendly neighbours, close to city by car (less than 10 minutes) shopping strip with bar, IGA, Indian, Pizza, Chemist are only 200 metres away, Elwood beach 10 minutes walk, with Ripponlea train station 10 minutes in the opposition direction, females friendly with them standing on street corners in St Kilda is what got me to move to Elwood :D.

You will also meet a higher quotient of pretentious w***ers in the inner burbs.
