Melbourne traffic a DISGRACE!

Yup it sucks, drives me and the wife insane. We live in the eastern suburbs, sometimes you feel like you're getting tormented by the lack of movement in traffic.

Melbourne is a dream compared to Sydney, and both are lightyears ahead of Brisbane.

I'm not sure how its been the last couple of years since they opened the tunnel, but it used to be a disaster. The bridges are crap and you have to cross the river at least once to get anywhere. It's just perpetual bottlenecks.

Don't even get me started on the Gateway Motorway. The number of flights I've missed...

It's getting worse.

Are there twice as many cars on the road as there were this time last year? Took me an hour to get from Wantirna to Mulgrave this morning, a 12-minute trip in the middle of the day.

The lord has spoken

ITS A JOKE

I'm from the north-west, but I'd have to say the traffic in the eastern suburbs is infinitely worse than this side of town. At least here, even if there's traffic you generally move. I spose it might be because the eastern suburbs extend out quitet far these days in comparison to the west.

My daughter lives at Cockatoo & works at Bayswater. During peak hour it takes 1 & 1/2 to 2 hours each way, in non peak hours it's only 45 minutes. Fortunately she asked her boss if she could start 2 hours earlier & finish 2 hours earlier, luckily it was OK. So she leaves home at the same time, but gets home so much earlier.

All of the roads between around Caulfield/Malver and the Eastern suburbs (Kew etc) are so unbelievably frustrating. Trams, cars parked on the side of the road reducing it to the one tram lane and ****ING SHOPPING STRIPS EVERYWHERE!!!

If I was in charge, the first thing I would do is firebomb every shopping strip on roads with trams (except for the ones that are divided and the trams have their own lanes).

So much truth in this statement.

Vancouver is really frustrating as well. It just came out that we have the second worst traffic congestion in North America - just behind LA. When the city was expanding they tried to make it environmentally friendly by having no big highways. Now we just have a bunch or arterial roads with cars in gridlock pumping out exhaust!

That is hands down the worst idea I've ever heard.

Yep. Something to do with keeping the natural beauty of the place. This province has good weed and they must have been sampling it. We have one highway and it's the worst part of the city. Constant roadworks and they keep changing the signs. About 4 times now I have gone in the wrong lane and ended up crossing a bridge to the other side of the city

Melbourne will need to upgrade it's train system to london esq standard before to long or else I think or our roads are going to be a major problem. It's all good and well having one train line to the outer eastern suburbs like Ringwood. But what about the whole city of Knox? Doncaster? Surely adding buses isn't going to solve or congestion problems.

Vancouver has an extensive, elevated skytrain that links Burnaby, Metro town, surrey University of British Columbia and downtown especially on its expo and millenium lines. Canada line goes to Richmond and has a branch line to it's airport. When u factor in how less spread out Vancouver is compared to Melbourne and has only half the population, you can see why Melbourne has problems.

I don't think a Doncaster rail line is viable because there is not enough catchment to warrant. Ditto Rowville. Much better to implement a Bus Rapid Transit on those two corridors for the time being. Sending Doncaster to the city via Victoria Park would choke the Epping/ Hurstbridge and Rowville would choke the Caulfield group especially since 18 trains run per hour run inbound from Dandenong during peak hour (2 V-lines) and is expected increase in frequency as the south east is a growth corridor. Signalling allows for 24 TPH.

Ted is getting on with the job and doing his best in trying circumstances made impossible by labor pissing money away on rubbish like myki, desal, north-south pipeline etc. He is expected to Lobby Canberra for more funding for grade separation of the Dandenong line and the metro rail tunnel which i believe is poorly planned. It makes you realise how far behind Australia really is.

public transport is the key

im out in the north west of melbourne and it takes me 30 minutes less to drive my car to essendon station, park within the vicinity and walk to the station and catch the train in & then reverse it coming home. there is just no incentive.

i have also noticed that any train between 7-9am and 430-6pm each day on the craigieburn line is almost at capacity, this could be a huge issue in the next few years as more people go on the roads.

its more of a generational change but i think as a society we need to change our perceptions of car use as more of a luxury, alternate mode of transport than dependent. of course this relies on better planning etc.

Sigh....Myki although handled badly(perhaps that's the company's fault rather then the government) is just getting us up to par with the rest of the world.
