Why don't you come down and train with the boys? Play against Theo, Johnny A or Scotty in central defence. If you don't end up with any bruises show me afterwards and I'll pay you some money. If you're clean, you pay me. How about it?

Don't just watch the game, that's weak. PLay the game and them make an informed comment. If you've played, then I accept your view.

Camberwell on Thurs night. 7.15 pm.

lol

I don't understand your argument. If we get 'bruises' playing soccer its a 'tough' sport? The only way we'd get bruises is if some other bloke kicked us in the legs which FYI is how girls fight.

You don't scratch as well do you?

That's b/c bruises can result only from physical contact. I'll tell you what, you tell me what constitutes tough, and soft, and we'll work from there. I can define tough any way you want me to.

Put your money where your mouth is, come down to soccer training one night, no more than that, then come back on this forum and you can bag soccer all you want if its warranted.

You're either scared or weak.

Camberwell, burke road 7.15 pm this Thurs.

...I'm either scared or weak? Well that is a difficult choice...I'll have to go with 'weak' but you have to understand that there is a rather annoying stretch of sea between me and Camberwell which is really more of the problem than me being weak.

I'll give you a hint, a non-contact sport is 'soft'.

********. You're a kiwi

Still a soft excuse. Why can't you go to a local soccer club and do just one training session? I'll give you a hint - don't train against the defenders - go with the midfielders they don't tackle as hard. And wear shinguards so you don't bruise your supple legs, but if you're tough as you imply then you can go without.

Look forward to hearing how your soccer training session goes. The forum waits in suspense.

Remeber your definition of 'soft' is no contact. If you don't have any physical contact while you hold the ball (your definition of soft), you are then in a position to say that soccer is soft and I will humbly agree. I would still be happy to bet money with you I need the cash for next year's Victory membership.

I was referring to the Bass Strait...

I'm not going to goto a soccer training session as it would be a waste of my time.

FYI I was unfortunate enough to play soccer in Primary to High School and while I can't comment on adult soccer training the training I did was as about as tough as a pillow fight.

Hey Vinnie, I DON'T think I'll be coming down to play your weak, pussy-arse little 'sport'. I played a real sport for 10 years, and let me tell you about it.
Year 8 of my career: I suffered 2 broken fingers and a ruptured eardrum.
Year 9: I crossed legs with another player and mine broke. The crowd said they could hear the loud snap on the boundary line 40 metres away.
Then it got REALLY nasty....
Year 10: I took a knee to the guts which, unbeknownst to me, ruptured my spleen. I played on for 15 minutes, thinking I was just winded, until I collapsed. An ambulance rushed me to hospital, where the surgeons opened me up and found 2 litres of blood in my stomach that shouldn't have been there. I was approx 15-20 minutes from death. I still have the 6 inch scar on my gut to prove it.
So no, I don't think any of the piss-ant little bruises I get off Theo the Turk will quite compare to that (unless of course, he and 12 of his mates come visit me AFTER training)
Thanks for the offer though.....:thumbsu:

Roddy

where does that leave your other favourite sport, cricket?

no excuses. its pretty simple - come along to one soccer training session, see how you go, then you are free to call soccer 'soft' and all the other names. I'll even buy you a beer afterwards. No tricks - just want you to actually play the game before slagging off that its a weak sport. That's all I want.

I don't go around claiming AFL is weak (I played it four 4 years). If I did claim its weak, I'd have the guts to try it before I make the claims you do about soccer.

See, I think you are weak. But prove me wrong. Show that there's no physicality in soccer. Are you in Melbourne?

Camberwell, 7.15pm Burke Rd - Ask for Vinnie. I'll be waiting.

Thank-you I now understand the word 'no', but its not me you should be worried about.

Theo the big Turk will be waiting for you in the clubroom showers after your soccer training session. He doesn't know the meaning of 'no'.

Yeah, remind me not to drop the soap......

Actually, there were a few big hip & shoulders, but they quickly get carded.
The Australian brand of soccer is much more physical than the European's. Don't see as much in the way of diving acts. It's growing on me. Always hated it growing up - bored me to tears. The live matches are what has converted me.

It would be great if Aussie soccer, and asia too - continued to have theatrics free soccer. I remember korea and japan being fresh too last time.

Will have a look at argentina next time out here - in the WC they have morphed from one of the most cynical, melodramtic and dirty teams ever into a great team to watch. Speed and Skill !

It is more physical, I hope Australia always play like that internationally as well, I'd rather see a physical game then see us win via diving, and generally doing anything but playing the game.

If you want to get technical, ballet can be considered to be extremely physically punishing.

Soccer requires a high degree of skill and I enjoy it as a spectacle and especially so with the A-League which I think has derived much of it's good sportmanship and lack of diving from the rich tapestry of AFL.

I didn't begin this topic to start a debate on how tough players of any given code are. It was simply for Hawk fans who are also interested in the Victory a place to talk about the impending Grand Final and celebrate a great win together, and I don't think anyone can disagree that like it or not, the sport of soccer has enjoyed a huge profile boost as a result of A-League.

Maybe we'll see players switching codes in the future? Perhaps playing in both to stay fit as cricketers once did which gave birth to Aussie Rules in the early 1900s.

Edited for accuracy! :D

Roddy,

Don't forget, soccer traiing tonight 7.15pm. Burke Road. Ask for Vinnie.

You claimed soccer was a soft sport so we're going to give you a run with the boys so you can make up your own mind and report back to this forum tomorow morning. We reckon you're actually a nerdy weedy boy hiding away in cyberspace so we look forward to you showing up.

If you don't show Theo, Johnny A, Willy the Scot and I will track you down and kit you up and drag you onto the soccer pitch.

Be a man.

Oh Damn!!! Oh sh*t!!!!! Oh blast!!!!! It's nearly 8.30, so I musta missed it!!! I had to come home from my nerdy, weedy work and watch my grass grow.
Bit relieved though! You big tough soccer blokes probably woulda got stuck right into me at training. (actually it's not the training I was worried about, it's that trip to the showers post-training that you mentioned that was concerning me!)
Give my sincerest apologies to Theo and Willy!!!

Don't know why people would enter this thread just to bag soccer and it's rise.

I happen to really enjoy the game. Watching and playing( on a social level, not competitively).

I think it's great for Victoria and Australia in general that we've gotten right behind the Victory and the Socceroos. I had so many late nights during the World Cup and was truly gutted when we went down to the Italians.

Like many here I once thought it was a ridiculously boring and soft game.
I was wrong on both counts.
