Police have charged a 63-year-old Greensborough man with murder over the death of Melinda Freeman more than 30 years ago.

Ms Freeman was found dead in her home in Whittlesea in October 1991.

Detectives said she had been assaulted and the house appeared to have been ransacked.

Earlier that day, Ms Freeman and her husband had been at a family reunion, but she had later been left alone in the house to study.

Police said her husband returned to the house to find the front door open and the body of Ms Freeman lying on the top storey landing.

Wonder what happened to finally get the charges to stick.

My Mum worked with someone who was married to/or knew a cop who worked the case and he was there only suspect. Just didn't have enough evidence to go to trial.

He was also in a relationship with our next door neighbors daughter back around the time of the inquest. My sisters ex-husband use to chat to him a bit but no one knew about the ex-wife until the inquest into her murder popped up in the news.

Cop i knew working the case out of whittlesea said same thing .
The fact that he has been living amongst our greensy community is disturbing enough.

Interesting case, perhaps as much because it's quite local to me and I'd never heard about it until yesterday, the local community Facebook page certainly has a bit to say about it.

Melinda Freeman was a junior champion gymnast and a devoted mother, who was studying at the time for a proposed career in the beauty industry. Craig Freeman has a landscaping / lawnmowing business in Greensborough and was a former Carlton under 19 player, he continued playing local football, but not sure for which club.

It will be interesting to see the police's version of events and how it picks apart at what they'll allege is the staged alibi and crime scene. Along with where the baby child was when they're alleging he committed the crime.
