Melksham's replacement

I'm just stoked that after years of copping shit from all and sundry I can look forward to the season knowing we won't end up with the spoon.

...surely not...
We've been fortunate over the years to use expansion sides as a cushion. Then the saints saved us. now we have crappy Carlton and b-grade Essendon to sit on top of.

A cunning plan. Executed quietly and efficiently.

Agreed. We should be able to upgrade a rookie to the main list and be able to replace that player with another rookie. The 4 clubs affected outside of Essendon should be able to have a full list. Yes, we knew the risk by taking Melksham, but we are punished by not being able to play that particular player for a year. We should be allowed to have a full list in 2016..

With Joel Smith as a cat b rookie, we had 45 players which is 1 more player than quite a few clubs...

The Bulldogs released a statement at approx 10am. St K & Port 1230ish. Us, not until approx 5pm, and it's very brief. Something suggests we are very unhappy/ill prepared for this eventuality: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-01-12/club-statement-on-jake-melksham

If the club couldn't see this as a possible, if not probable outcome, then we are not as rid of the managerial incompetence that we thought we were.

Still this is the club that hired Goody based on the fact that he was "really honest" in his interview.

Caro has a new stick to beat us with.

I know it's not as bad but that's now 3 years in a row we have lost a new player for a season before they've played , not too mention clarke Trenners and jurrah
Ah yes the great MFC tragedies - Hogan, Petracca, Melksham.

Look at it as a positive, we've gotten the season ending ... isssue ... to a new player out of the way now, all others can rest easy. :thumbsu:

Don't see the big gain in picking up another state leaguer, on the rookie list who will need to go back to the draft next year if he is any good? Just upgrade a current rookie no loss imo

We haven't got a rookie who's put their hand up yet, so I hope we can wait a while until we choose who to upgrade.
I'm sure the Footy Department will use the senior list spot as a prize for the rookies to compete. No need to make a call on it until at least R1 or until needed.

There's two ways we can approach the rookie promotion

If we go with who we deem as the best player on our rookie list, then we'd promote Michie, especially given he was probably unlucky to be delisted ahead of Terlich and Matt Jones.

This wouldn't be the worst idea, given we have several players who can play that half-back role on our senior list: Salem, Lumumba, Grimes, Trengove, Watts?, Brayshaw, Hunt and we could perhaps even start trying players like Vince or Vandenburg off half-back to enable Salem, Oliver and Brayshaw more time on ball.

The other approach is to promote a like for like replacement, in which case it would come down to Mitch White and Josh Wagner. White looked decent in his debut, actually has some speed and apparently is quite a good trainer.

Despite this I'd still rather promote Wagner on the basis that he's more mature (21 yo), with more experience and that is the role Melksham was brought in to do, be a more mature head off half back.

Agree with this 100%

No need to be so rational. Throw all the rookies into a cage match and the last man standing gets the senior spot.

Yeah, that whole not playing any games since September thing makes it a bit tough though.... If only there was pre-season training for somebody to put their hand up without us knowing about it. Hang on, there is?!?

Good list of Bomber top-up options from AFL.com.au: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-01-14/which-topup-players-could-the-bombers-turn-to

1) Hypothetically, if we could take one from this list, who would it be?

2) Since when has Rohan Bail been a coach's dream?

3) Would you like to see a delisted MFC player at Essendon? I'd love to see The Russian going around
1. Id throw a rookie to Watson from Carlton, ripping left boot

2.Everyone hates him but if given a defensive role he does the job

3.Id be filthy if we lost Cross to them because hes important off field, but wouldnt mind blokes like Bail and Mckenzie cause they atleast had a crack

Um, yeh I sort of meant that it would be handy if we were permitted to elevate a rookie at any time.

That way we could wait until round 8 or 9 if we wanted, and see who demands a spot via strong VFL form.
