The memorable highs for me;

  • 1993 V Melbourne - Only win of the year if I recall correctly, completely unexpected.
I was at this game, and it was our only win of the year. It was the first game coached by Ron Barassi. We also won by plenty! I think Osborne kicked quite a few goals that day?

Off topic, but i reckon that Barassi turned our club around,in those dark days.
He gave the club pride in itself. And i am forever gratefull for his efforts.
He is a legend, for what he did for our club. And is often forgoten,as one of the people who believed, that the club could survive!

Without a doubt. I honestly believe that if it wasn't for Barassi our club may not have survived. He didn't set the world on fire with his coaching but he lifted us off the bottom of the ladder and was instrumental in the club gaining recognition in Sydney. He also got us Plugger and Roos (arguably the 2 swans most influential in our success).

Cheers Malc, good that we agree on the turning point in our clubs history.
Hopefully some our younger posters will ,do some research, and look at the
ins and outs of the clubs struggle to survive in Sydney.

All the highs have been listed already, but for me there is one incredible low not yet mentioned and it was the 1st semi V West Coast at Subiaco in 05.
I didn't sleep for 3 nights after that game because of the disgraceful umpiring that cost us that win. The free against Leo (when he actually was innocent), Goodsey not getting the free paid for tripping, all in all, the worst case of home town umpiring decisions I have ever seen.
Of course, as we all know, it was onward and upward from there, but at the time I was devastated.
I've often pondered since, if we would have gone on and won the flag if that had not happened. I think it gave our boys the steely determination that they showed in the rest of the finals games that year.

Most of my favourite moments have been covered above. Glad to see that the Hawthorn Semi was mentioned. That game is a poor cousin to the famous Lockett Prelim, but the way we pulled that game out of nothing was just as remarkable. And to see Cressa (a man who'd kicked something like 9.21 at that piont in his career) take a mark in the square and kick the winning goal was something I still can't quite explain.

But a few more:

Highs:

1996: Round 22 Syd vs West Coast. We thrashed the Eagles in a torrential downpour to seal the minor premiership. It was freezing. And it was bucketing down. But 33k so called fair weather fans kept warm by starting a slow Sydney Chant. Something unique in Aussie Rules back then. Shame the Chant has died out now, but that night it was so loud it made your spine tingle. And I'm positive the way that chant lifted our boys in the finals was what got us into the Granny that year.

1999 - Round 10 Syd vs Coll. Lockett breaking the record. Kicked 9 goals on some skinny rookie we'd never heard of called Mal Michael. Poetry that Kel was the man who passed it to him. And that was our Grand Final that year. I ran onto the field like a schoolkid. :D

2003 - Rnd 5 Syd vs Melb at the SCG. We were 1 and 3 for the year, trailing by 27 pts late in the 3rd qtr and those pundits who'd written us off as certain wooden spooners might have started thinking they were right. But then we piled on 10 goals in the last qtr! It was the game that turned everything around and put us on track for the Prelim that year.

2003 - Rnd 6 Coll vs Syd at TD. The very next week we met the Grand Finalists away. It was also Davis's first game against his old club. It was a great game, but a personal favourite for me as I travelled down with all my mates to see it, and Davis marked the ball right at the death and slotted the goal on the siren to the howls of hysterical Pies fans. :thumbsu:

Lows:

1999 - Rnd 3 Ess vs Syd MCG. I had travelled down on my futile yearly quest to see us beat Essendon (which lasted from 1996 through until we broke the duck in 2005) to see us thumped away by the Dons yet again. And that year year didn't disappoint. Lloyd kicked 13 goals. I'll repeat that: Lloyd kicked 13 goals. All I have to say about that night.

I was there at that game, made the trip up for the weekend, was well worth the terrible Virgin Blue service. And a week later at the game that Davis kicked the goal late to seal victory I was there as well. Then a week later we played Brisbane in the game I spoke about earlier. It was a great 3 weeks to be a Swannies fan.

Agree with that. It was just like a pressure release on the whole season. And we never looked back.

Some superb games so i won't repeat the obvious ones but 2 of my faves that haven't been mentioned which came from a "recession we had to have year" Which was 2002 (Got Roos as coach and never looked back).

Round 3 Vs the Kangaroos - Game was see-sawing all night and we got ourselves down by 3 points with seconds to go. 30 metres out from our goal Cressa the showman annoyed shannon motlop. Shannon had a brain fade and grabbed Cressa high and being the showman Cressa is, he milked it for all it was worth.
Umpire gave Cressa the free, siren blows and cooly as you like, Cressa slots it from 30 metres (he loves the big stage). Everyone was in raptures. Eade had half of his shirt tucked out running onto the field to hug Dunkley as it was his 200th as well i think (and micky O's 150th).

Round 19-20 Vs the Kangaroos - Back at the SCG again (as the Roos had a deal to play their home games there) Another see-sawing game for 3 quarters until the absolute explosion of 10 goals which was the final quarter. I think it was Willo that started the avalanche as he kicked 2 memorable goals in 30 seconds. One was a long towering bomb from 52 metres then 30 seconds later he kicks a quick snap while being tackled at the same time to get us about 10 points ahead.

From there it was just raining goals for Sydney and was the breakout game for Ryan O'Keefe as our next big thing. Prior to this game he was struggling to hold down a permanent role being at either HBF or in the midfield. However Roos gave him a spot in the forward line and kicked 4 goals that game. Has never looked back since.

That 10 goal avalanche also contained 2 awesome Paul Kelly Goals. Kelly kicked a pearler from the boundary line and a huge set shot bomb from 50.

:thumbsu: I remember that well - an oscar nominated dive. At least it went the right way.

Wow. That was hilarious. WE'd had about 5 shocking decisions go against us in a row. And then the Ump pulled that free for Cressa out of his arse. It was wonderful. That happened about 10m away from me. And I spent Cressa's entire prep actually having a crack at the umpire on the mark for making such a crap decision - even tho it went our way. :D

Great post. I have shivers just reading and being reminded of some of the greatness.

Living in Tas I have only ever seen the Swans live 3 times and my first will always stick with me. It was round 19, 1995. I was eleven.

Swans V Fitzroy at the Western Oval. There was bugger all people there. I would guess about 6 thousand? Lockett kicked 16 straight. Everyone at the ground moved from one end to the other each quarter to be as close as they could to Plugger. It was brilliant. I remember Lockett snapped one that wsa bouncing through and Kappler grabbed it and booted it over the line, should have been 17 straight for the big man.

Was a truly special individual effort.

Being a little bit older, all of the above mentioned are in my fav/worst selection, but from memeory in '87 I think, we had 3 games in a row where we kicked 30+ goals, still a record I believe. They were pretty good games to watch. The first was against the Eagles, the 2nd was against Essendon and the third was against Richmond. The Richmond game, we finished of with 199 points for the game, even though we kicked 30 goals. It would have been another record if we had scored 1 more point, being 3 games in a row to score 200 points or more.

Yes, there is some fantastic and some very low memories from following the Red & Whites. I wouldn't have it any other way. Just makes the high sooooo much sweeter.:D

Yes that was a topsy turvy end to a season. We won three games with 30 goals +

30.21 (201) vs West Coast
36.20 (236) vs Essendon
31.12 (198) vs Richmond

But then we lost 3 of the next 4 games leading into the finals. And then we absolutely screwed the pooch in the first home final with the Hawkers, and then trooped down to Melb where the Demons spanked us. Talk about the agony and the ecstasy.

If the Swans actually knew how to play accountable footy anything might have happened that year. But we were downhill skiers in those days that couldn't even hold an 8 goal lead if we didn't win the ball at the centre bounces. Uncontested ping pong. And it cost us badly. I loved the players we were lucky enough to have in that brief successful era. But give me our hard grafting current squad anyday.
