Oh yeah, how could i forget.
Rd 4, 1996. We played Richmond at Waverly Park. Richmond were coming off a very good 1995 IIRC and we were given no chance of winning this one.
It was drizzling most of the day i think and scoring goals was hard to come by. But in the last quarter i was up behind the goals richmond were kicking to, and there was nothing in this game and the Swans were hanging on for grim life. The ball was camped in Richmonds 50m zone for what felt like the entire last quarter.
When we cleared it out of there, at times Plugger had to come up to the wing to even get a kick, i distinctly remember one occasion when he took a mark on the wing there were plenty of bronx cheers. But the funny thing was there was not one player ahead of him. Not one and he was on the wing.
Anyway, right at the death i think it was Daffy who had a snap shot on goal, Dunkley was right on the line where he was going to try and touch it to prevent a goal, until Richo came flying through and flattened Dunkley before he got the chance to jump at it. The ball sailed through for a goal and the Richmond fans went up thinking they had scored the goal which put them back in front.
It wasn't to be. The ump gave a free kick to Dunkley and the Swans hung on by a point.
