We need a distraction from the "drug" stories dominating Big Footy.

What positive and negative memories do you have of recently retired and past Geelong players? For example, when I think of Matthew Scarlett my favorite positive memory is the famous toe-poke in the 2009 GF, and the first not so positive memory that comes to mind is his jab to the face of Hayden Ballantyne in R1, 2012.

When I think of Gary Ablett Snr, my favorite positive memory is his unbelievable form in the 1989 finals series, and my negative memory, if you call it that, is when he walked away from the game, temporarily, in 1991, I think it was (?)

hahaha is the pun intended when you underlined and used the words "positive" and "negative".

My favourite memory of Scarlett was his goal against Gerig/ St Kilda, then running the whole length of KP to get back to Full back lololol.

Another positive was when he hit Ballantyne.

Memories ... way back to Wadey on World of Sport Goal Kicking Comp kicking his 60m torps straight through, and finally meeting him about 10 years ago.

GAS ... just about anything he did on the footy field - his first State game in (?) '85 after (I think) under 10 games with us, kicking a lazy 8 from the wing. Every game he played against Richmond. Negatives - too many, his clear physical deterioration (due to?) in his last couple of years with us.

Chappy ... the grab in '07 GF, the goal in '09 GF. Negatives - hammys.

I could go on.

Just thinking about Lonners and happy thoughts about his success reminded me of two other, non-Cats awesome footy memories:

Jason McCartney's return game, I was almost in tears.

SJ in our our round nineteen clash last year with the Dawks, done and dusted until we got the pill into his hands and he let rip with arguably the most audacious, precision guided kick you'd ever want to see, probably the only bloke in the side who would even attempt a kick like that let alone have the skill to pull it off.

Not exactly a recent retiree, but memories of the great Graham "Polly" Farmer and his sublime skills are many, kinda feel sorry for those who never had the privilege of seeing this master craftsman ply his trade.

1. Travis Varcoe. His last 2 games. Exact opposite scenarios.

2. Ditto Max Rooke.

3. Essendon's last 2 flag captains, and their most recent memories.

4. Menzel's game v Pies 2011, followed by his game v Haw 1 week later, ecstasy to agony.

5. The Ling "goal" v Saints 2010 final, again ecstasy to despair.

The thing that put the biggest smile on my face was Lingy's goal in the 2011 GF. NAIL. COFFIN.

Johnson in the 2011 Qualifying Final against Hawthorn. Got a stack of the ball but was playing dumb footy. Tried a stupid torp where he had no chance.

Then in the run of goals we kicked he soccered through an absolute beauty. The MCG was shaking.

Nothing will beat sitting in the forward-pocket of the Great Southern Stand, sunnies on, cold beer in hand, with the smell of sunscreen and baby-oil lofting from the terraces, surrounded by the roar of starved Cats supporters tearing a new one as we behold with a mix of awe, pride and jubilation, our Geelong boys rip apart the Kangas in the 2007 Elimation Final. The skill, the power, the artistry - jaw-dropping stuff, all set to a perfect sunny September Sunday at the 'G. After a tight first quater, we just opened up and let the light shine on - the running, the goals, the marks. We all felt the drought was just about to break, we just couldn't yet truly believe it...would give anything to go back to that day and re-live it all again.

Polly at KP in 1962. I was enthralled! He just seemed to float above the ground and was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I could have turned for him.
Gazza snr. Awesome. The Highlights pack from Footscore says it all.
Varcoe's assists. He seemed to have a hand in virtually every great goal since '07 (including Lingy's above and Chappies '09 GF clincher), then he nailed his own with that unforgettable 'coast-to-coaster' in the 2011 GF. "He'll NEVER forget it!!"
Max! A human wrecking ball. More heart than head, but soooo inspiring to watch.

The best part about that goal is that it came directly from a Josh Gibson spoil. The king (apparently) of spoiling marking contests knocked it perfectly into Johnson's path. He could not have handed it to him any better.

Yes, my memories too, he was just unbelievably different to anything we'd ever seen before, a pity his season was cut short, it undoubtedly cost us the premiership; we would have gone straight through to the GF, and we wouldn't have been robbed in 2 Prelims in one season - but 1963 made up for it in spades!

That was a great goal, my highlight was Selwoods balk and handball, we said it plenty of times in 2007 but again he showed maturity and experience well beyond his years.

Steve Johnson when he soccered that goal against the Hawks in the 2011 QF was just awesome (could feel the vibration through the TV) and then in the prelim when he went down with a possible season ending knee injury, I was just stunned and felt sick.

He really DID retire on the ultimate high, eh? Chris Scott's reaction in the box was fantastic as well. ALSO, watch Lingy's reaction during Chris's victory speech when he said it would be remiss of him if he didn't thank Dasher and the Moon-dog.

Ecstasy - the 2007 grand final - all of it - the beautiful length of the field sweeping passages of play - the final result - the dignity of the players in victory - the years of suffering at an end.

Agony - the 1997 debacle in Adelaide where we woz robbed blind. I still can't think of that game without getting angry.
