Menegola - what happened there?

Mengola has turned himself into a fine mid coming in behind Danger, Selwood and Duncan. Dominated some of the games towards the end of the year. In Friday's final Scott played him out of position as a half forward.

Has there ever been a more overrated opposition player on this board just because he was once on our list, hardly touched the ball on Friday night and when he did he had his butcher's apron on. Just like in last year's PF.

Guarantee if he played for Freo he's be right at the top of the whipping boy list.

At least BF got more varieties when come to changes for matches . Rather then just the usual suspect

Despite our lowley current position he wouldn't get a game for us in our full strength side. He can really only play on ball and we have a full book of players better than him in that position. He's useless as a defensive role player rotating off the back or half forward flank and he can't hit the broad side of barn at 10 paces by foot so he can't play outside.

The cats have no depth in their midfield at all and I'm sure they wish he wasn't their forth best in that position.

I wonder if there is a thread on the Hawthorne board questioning the decision to delist him after just one season.
Hawthorn happy to let him go just like Dawson .

IMO its perfectly appropriate to question our development and selection policies when a decent (not amazing but handy) player slips through the net.
Of course blame can go to Menagola if he wasn't giving it his all but we need to look at our side of it too.

Imo Mengelola has had a better year this year than any Suban has had in his whole career.

Nah Menegola is a athlete who can find the pill but can barley kick the ball and is pretty vanila. Suban is far more versatile when he is playing well, great kick and natural leader. Not to mention he is a great guy, one of the most popular at the club. Menegola has a serious case of FIGJAM. Yeah he had a pretty bad 2016 and 15 but his back half of this year has been good. If he can regain his form from earlier in the career he would compliment our midfield far far more than a player like Menegola.

100% disagree. If your head isn't in it (and I believe Menegola said his wasn't at Hawks or Freo) then there is nothing we can do for him.

Sometimes it takes rejection to force you out of bad habits. Obviously it took Sam 2 goes to get it in his head. I have no problem whatsover with us delisting him if his attitude wasn't there. Doesn't have anywhere near enough talent to compromise in that area.

He was the fittest on our list so had a good work ethic and he did say that he felt that he was held back by our constant demands on him playing defensively. Was only when Schofield encouraged him to play an attacking role that he flourished.

It's very fair to question our handling of him but at the end of the day none of us will know the full story.

Not sure about personality/character or sociability etc. but on the paddock Mengelola gets hold of it way more, lays more tackles, takes double the marks and kicks double the goals. On field performance is just not even close.

another thing that needs to be brought up... Joel Hamling....

He was taken late in the 2011 draft. He was at geelong for 3 years. Played 0 games and got delisted. Bulldogs picked him up. Played 23 games in 2 years, played in the 2016 GF and got a premiership medal, then Went to freo. Hamling played all 22 games for freo this season.

Funny how a players stock can rise in a space of 1-2 seasons.

Has been a shining light for us this year IMO, an inspired trade.

So he's a bit better than 2 of the worst players on a team that finished 14th this year.

No - he's a fair bit better than those two. That statement was conservatively crafted to ensure no debate that he would now make it on our list.

Last night again underlined what he brings (in the fifth last game of the year) and he has done that very consistently for the last two years. Would easily be in the the top 50 inside mids in the game now (which doesn't sound that great, but there are 18 teams out there).
