Menegola - what happened there?

It's very fair to question our handling of him but at the end of the day none of us will know the full story.

Sam was interviewed by Mick Barlow for his podcast and he said some interesting things comparing the way Freo go about things versus how Geelong do it.

Team first v encouraging the individual etc.

Not saying Freo are wrong and the Kitties are right, but different approaches are going to be more effective on different individuals. I think that's what is going on here.

He really is a totally different player now to the one that looked below standard in his early years. He's developed beautifully.

The biggest thing for me is hid decision making and kicking skill. He still makes the odd blue but in the WAFL when listed to us he was dreadful in both these areas. He could always find the ball and run all day but that's where it ended.

No doubt that's a part of it, he was encouraged to play with more flair and take the game on at Subi and no doubt at Geelong too. Maybe he lacked confidence in his ability to make it and just needed to be backed in?

But the improvement in his footy nouse in terms of decision making and also his foot skills tells me that he's now getting access to better coaching. Let's face it our development coaches while he was at the club weren't great and skills weren't a high priority.

Having everyday access to Selwood and his footy nouse and experience would be extremely valuable too.

Two-can Sam attributes Simon Lloyd as having a huge influence on his development both at Freo and Geelong. However it is Steve Grace who both him and Barlow describe as a brilliant development coach at Freo who Sam says began his progress toward becoming a contested player. He credits Schofield at Subi and also gives big raps to Nigel Lappin and speaks very highly of Knights.OBree as his VFL coach also gets some plaudits.
Speaks about concentrating on doing everything he could to nail his role inside the team plan at Geelong, fitting into the game system, how united the group was.1700 plus days before a Hawthorn debut,6 years for 6 games.
Differences between the three clubs he's been at;he places Hawthorn in the middle and Freo and Geelong at polar opposites.
Reckons personalities of each clubs leaders contribute to culture, describes Freo's culture as ruthless and demanding whereas Geelong's is more accepting of individual difference, and Hawthorn somewhere in between.
Freo delisting was another wake up call.
His three AFL coaches Clarko,Lyon,Scott:Clarko given best spray,Lyon very demanding,Scott very supportive and loves playing for him.

A very good story of determination, application and reward for effort and belief.
Has just built and built on what has gone before to continue to improve.
Barlow reckoned Creepy took Lance Armstrong's advice on bike riding to cop a 12 month ban.
9 mins 40 for 3 klm time trial.Blicavs kills it at Geelong.

Nail ....head
Last year bulldogs won the flag.....on the back of some rapid development from their young players.....they also had liam jones on their list previously...goes to carlton...continues to do nothing then with a switch to defence in last year of his contract and last year in the AFL ...rest is history. So does that mean carlton are better at develpoing young players than the bulldogs?
It happens so many times in AFL cicles......its why this game (and life) is determined so much by mental application
Also means tho that lessons can and should still be learned ,by freo in this case esp in such a highly competitive environment like the AFL
Finally, hopefully we can put this thread to bed. Weve missed out on far far better players

We played him mostly as a tagger, doesn't really help.

We had him pigeonholed as the next Ryan Crowley. When he didn't turn out to be the next Ryan Crowley we got rid of him. That's just how we roll.

This thread is funny. One week he is a spud and that is why we delisted him. The next week he rules and kicks arse, and RTB is the spud for not developing him nor using him in the right position.

That was the (sarcastic) point of my post.

He just shanked a set shot to boot.
