Stanton and jacobs as development coaches are pretty meh appointments. Along with flipping back to Tudor as vfl coach, why was he even moved in the first place. Amateur hour.
Tudor was only coaching VFL during the pandemic wasn’t he? When the other staff were laid off and he had to cover the gap.

Well he coached them in 2021 didn’t he? Going into that year they didn’t think their would be lockdowns and so on again, the thought was it would be a full season.

Don't mind the Jacobs appointment. Guy was as good defensively as they come.

Looks like Stanton is a pseudo stoppage coach. Whilst I like that we're investing in that, Stanton is an odd choice.

As a part time gig as well as doing development stuff, while the club kept tightening its belt to pay back covid debts?

He was still coaching the vfl team and Stanton took over the role in the same format for this season.
And in 2023 when Tudor goes back to it it’ll be a full time role.

So Tudor was a VFL coach at other clubs previously and took a full time development role at Essendon. That’s the reason he came to Essendon.

Then he backfilled the VFL position a few hours a week during the pandemic, because everyone was pitching in and wearing three hats each at that time to cover absences and keep things ticking during budget cuts.

Then when the club could afford to separate the roles again he went back to the full time development role he came here for, instead of the part time VFL role. So he’s back to focusing on doing one thing well instead of everything not good enough.

Now that both roles are full time they’re switching people around, and he can do the VFL role well as his sole focus instead.

I don’t think it’s difficult to see why he would want to do the full time job he came here for and not the part time version of a job he used to have elsewhere… and I doubt anyone else cared much other than wanting to bring Stanton across and find a spot for him while still pinching the pennies.

If Jacobs had anything to do with Windhager going from ‘I’ve never tagged anyone in my life’ to absolutely destroying people in the space of three months then this is a worthy investment.

He’s probably in the top 5 defensive midfielders of the last 20 odd years

Ooh, good challenge. I'd have Ling, Stenglein (bloke was super underrated), Kirk, Hewett, Crowley, Sewell ahead but he's definitely in the conversation.

Bias but I reckon prime Hocking was pretty good too. I think they were all better because they did a little bit (or more than a little bit) going the other way.

Jacobs was essentially a pure blanket, and was pretty incredible at it for a period of time before the concussion stuff unfortunately got him.

Stanton is a dev coach rather than a line coach so I’m not too worried about him being involved in any part of gameplay; agree it’s curious his focus will be stoppages since his standout strength as a player was gut running. As long as he’s not teaching players how to kick over the man on the mark, it should be fine.

You’d think Scott will play a fairly strong role in coaching general contested work and the related skills, and with Jacobs covering midfield defence and tagging skills, perhaps Stants will be the guy who’s there just to beef up the team and support the messages from the coaches during prep and on gameday.

I thought Stanton and Jacob's are VFL development coaches? Haha

And still we have Tapping, a reputed midfield coach, as a forward coach. Hmmm, I can't say I understand that at all.

They are development coaches but that doesn't necessarily mean they run a line for the VFL and that's it, they would be working with the 1st-4th years even when the VFL guys don't have a scheduled training session

That hasn't been confirmed for 2023, the info in the OP is based on last year and is updated as announcements are made about any changes.

Expected more of a clean out than just rearranging the deck chairs
Tudor is a solid choice as VFL coach
Stanton teaching contested footy? Gia teaching defense?
I get that coaching is different than playing but neither of these appointments are their strong suits
Feel the backline coach is the most crucial of the line coaches for this group going forward, hope Scott micromanages the **** out of Gia so we don't repeat the same setups in 2022

They where still short of staff and actually the AFL was planning for lockdowns as where most others based on medical advise. Not sure what you where planning but the advise was certainly not a lock down free 2021.

Be advised Jacobs planning a lockdown in the midfield

thread)
Would love to get this straightened out as there seems to be multiple teams now. Guessing some people work in more than one role...

AFL team is Scott and his assistants, Cara (team offence), Gia (backs/team defence), Jacobs (mids) and Tapping (forwards).

VFL team is Tudor and his assistants..? Perhaps the development coaches are also VFL line coaches? Although I doubt Cloke is doing all three VFL, VFLW and AFL development all at once.

Development team is Roberts (Head of Development), Hurley (Jack Jones Academy & welfare), Cloke (specialist) and Stanton (fundamental contest craft & game day role)

Roberts will lead a program aimed at improving all Essendon players ensuring they thrive and reach their full potential. He will manage the development team which includes newly appointed coaches Michael Hurley, Travis Cloke and Brent Stanton for our list focusing on skill development and football craft.

Dunno if Bellchambers is going around again. Phillips has been working with the young rucks (including AFLW) so idk if Bellchambers is even still there or really needed.

Dunno if Nat Wood has a formal role to go with her AFLW role as she’s full time and has to have something to do in the long off-season.

There are still gaps in our information I think

Wasn't she named as having a role in the Men's coaching group when she was appointed?

She was supposed to have a development role and be mentored by Rutten as part of a women's coaching pathways program in the AFL (club gets some sort of incentive).

But if she has a development role, you'd think she'd be named as part of the development team, along with Cloke (who is also VFLW coach)... but she isn't.

I'll leave that to you, you seem to have a better grasp on it.

Not really, the club hasn't told us enough to figure it out and all the club website info is out of date
