Went to Hogs Breath and ordered the Prime Rib and Pork Rib Duo.

The pic on the menu looks like this.

Meal served looked like this.

The chefs seem more interested in making the meal look artsy rather than actually cooking it well, or using better ingredients. And for the most part, those $40something dishes at those 'trendy' restaurants you get very little - often a small piece of meat with some tasteless vegetables on the side. The majority of the dish happens to be zig zagging sauce or garnish in intricate patterns. I paid for a meal, not for a ****ing art exhibition. This is why pub meals are usually better value, because it's no-frills food, cheap but plentiful and it often hits the spot.

Yes another food thread.

So I order a grilled chicken breast and vegetables with mushroom sauce, something like this I imagined;

I got a crumbed piece of chicken that went underneath the layers of a parmy...bashed within a centimetre, and tasteless....something like this...

After waiting 50 minutes for this delight, I could not be bothered complaining as I was ready to eat my hand off.

So BF'ers, share you tales of menu v reality meals....

How much were you charged?

Can't pay burger prices & expect steak

Yeah the second one I would just eat the schnitzel and tip the peas in the bin. Don't like peas but if the mash was good enough though I might eat it.

I ordered a pork knuckle in a ski resort town in Slovakia. Expected it to be small on par with what you get in the Czech republic but it was massive and it was sensational, despite having a fair bit of fat on it.

BTW have to look at Maccas to see why you shouldn;t expect the same quality of food in reality compared to what it looks on the menu.

The food in the ads is exactly the same ingredients as what you get. They just dress it up - like all food advertising.

Unless you're a real connoisseur, expensive restaurants are usually a waste of money.

I know a couple of people who are right into food, they really know their stuff and reckon they can really taste subtle ingredients and changes.

They're not bullshitters, I beleive them... and when I eat with them I enjoy it, but I don't appreciate it like they do. It's a real interest for them.

For those of us who eat like dogs - just put something mildly appetising in front of us and we'll inhale it - it's a waste really. It's like asking a 17yo binge drinker to critique reds.

I don't think there's really such a thing as "pub food" these days. They're mostly proper kitchens run by chefs, they're the same as restaurants. Some pubs have great food, other are shithouse. Pubs have generally been improving their fare for years now, as they want to be food destinations rather than just somewhere to have a pot - it makes money.

Not sure if you are in Melbourne or not but the Hofbrahaus in chinatown does an excellent pork knuckle.

With all due respect, that's a steaming load of... :)

Pub food has always been cooked by proper chefs.

And if you can't taste good food from bad you either need a new tongue or your mates are taking you to the wrong places
