Toast Menzel, Hunt, Duncan

I was a little shocked at how good all three were today. Particularly Duncan and Hunt.

I'd like to see what Bundy can do with a full game. Great effort from him in the last quarter.

I think that we are well equipped with mids and smalls but who will replace Ottens and Scarlett and Mooney?

I see the future problem of having no imposing big men. No Mooney or Max replacements who scare the Bejesus out of the opposition.

But yes, I am happy with the progress of our young guns. Collingwood bit the bullet and gave kids games over old favorites and it looks like Scott and Co are prepared to do the same.

Agree, it's an issue to address, but I have faith that Wells will, he's brilliant.

Honestly, our kids have been the highlight of the year for me. As I do most years, I wasn't expecting many opportunities for them, but due to circumstance and hard work they have got them, and they are having a real impact.

Duncan is just a jet, Menzel is so smart, and Poodle is so hard and runs wonderful lines, what a great combination. And Bundy has showed some flashes too, and Motlop is still to come.

Anyone who thinks we don't have great youth is an ignorant opposition supporter that knows nothing about our list.

Best of all, we're creating depth, and competition for spots, if these kids continue like this, there will be some premiership players missing out come finals time this year IMO.

No doubt about that PO..and with Motlop, Vardy , Mitch, ( and I believe Weston is a player, tho haven't seen him )..and Simpson and Smedts still to come, the list looks good...

I must add though that no-one can replace Scarlett...just a unique once in a lifetime full back....he will leave a big hole when his time comes.

Tim Lane springs to mind.

Great post. Come finals time, like the Pies last year, IF we happen to be in striking distance the kids will be essential to our chances. These 3 and others mentioned must be in the side vitally contributing or just on the fringe desperately pressing others for spots for us to remain viable.

I was super impressed with T Hunt yesterday. Wants the ball and uses it well. I haven't really seen him unwind and go on a run a la Wojcinski yet, but hopefully we'll get our chance soon. Looks a keeper, completely nullified whoever he was on (Motlop) and repelled quite a few Port advances.

It's all been said about Menzel and Duncan, but I love their composure and goal smarts. Christensen has showed some good signs too - still at times looks a touch of the pace but that goal showed a nice turn of speed and evasiveness.

The one who impressed me most was THunt. Duncan and Menzel were reasonably high draft picks - and have shown flashes of class.

THunt - was nearly always there to spoil. receive a handball, etc. Played really well. Was better than Menzel and Duncan when we played poorly in the first quarter.

He seems to get under the ball a bit when spoiling over head but I think he will get better t that over time.

Duncan looks to me to be one of those guys who will nearly always kick a goal in every match he plays.

Have not seen much of Christensen - but for some reason I get the feeling he might be a player too.

I agree whole heartedly with the comments - we are developing good young players - but mainly mid sized ones. For us to be seriously competitive we need to develop at least 2 talls that have real talent and presence. And I have not seen anyone yet that may fill that bill.

Scarlett has 2-3 seasons left in him if he decides to play on, Otttens looked good enough to go around maybe for another season but Mooney has only this season.

Given Pods is already quite old - and has 2-3 seasons in him I suspect - we need a new KP forward real soon - and it seems Brown is injury prone.

For all the great recruiting really only Mumford has been a good tall selection thus far. Perhaps Brown will make it, maybe Vardy, Simpson or West will come on yet. But we need one of them to come into the side this year and show something for us to be up there in the years to come.

Would help if Gillies or Drum could play a role like Josh Gibson did at North and now at the Hawks.

Agree with Belisarius. THunt is the the great value pick of the 3.

A Canadian watching the game with me yesterday picked on me for being interested in a blowout match. I told him it was the youngsters coming through that made a game like that exciting. And it's true, I'll be getting a lot out of this season, regardless of our position, because of the youth and new direction of the team. Very exciting.

Where is your Youtubing of Bundy's goal at? :D Gotta work harder for him Riz :D

Seriously, we talk about the others coz they've shown more to this stage, but Bundy showed enough yesterday to suggest we'll be giving him the same sort of praise by the end of the year.

Duncan is the stand out for me, I think he will be something special

I agree with this.

When I look at young players, I look for glimpses of things that they might be able to they do differently to other players. There are lots of players that come into teams and get a decent amount of possessions, hold their own straight away, and then go on to become "good average players".

The players that go on to be something special nearly always have at least one quality that allows them to stand out. Selwood was a classic example. It wasn't that he came into the side and picked up 20 possessions straight away (although that was nice), it was his ferocious attack on the ball, composure under pressure and leadership that set him apart from day 1.

So what is Duncan's 1 special quality? I reckon it is his self-belief almost to the point of arrogance. He carries himself like he belongs, he seems to have absolute belief in his ability, and he is never afraid to back himself. Not once have I seen him defer to a more senior player when he was in a decent position himself. He was like this from Round 1 last year when he debuted.

Every team needs "good soldiers" who are great team men. However these guys are pretty common and aren't hard to find. The guys who want the spot light on them and want the responsibility to make the big decision are difficult to find. Chappy has it, SJ has it, Bartel has it, Scarlo has it and Lingy has it.

I reckon Duncan has this quality as well. Luckily he has the skills to back it up. He will go far.

(On a different thought, imagine if Tommy H had this mindset? He would be a monster. Sigh.)

I have been really impressed with Christensen thus far.

I didn't think his contribution in the win against Freo got nearly the attention it deserved. He was the perfect sub in that game, and was a big factor in us winning. Pretty impressive for a first gamer, interstate against a pretty good team.

I am a convert...count me in. Really like what I have seen from Bundy this year. Looks a very likely type.

Lets hope for some more Bundy....( Uhmmm...I think I have said that before in different circumstances :D )

The form of the kids has been so encouraging , they will make mistakes and may be inconsistent at times but these 3 have shown enough to suggest they will be keepers.
Kudos yet again to Wells who has IMO put disposal skills as a non negotiable over the last few drafts - all the new batch rate very highly in this area and it will put them a long way towards being valuable contributors. Just need Mitch , Vardy or West to start putting pressure on our KPF's ..............

I will refrain from making biased comments about certain players.

All class. I giggle when I realise we only had to pay pick 28 for him. :thumbsu:

Got a heap of texts from mates when he kicked his first goal. Apparently everyone on TV saw "my pants explode" hehe.

Hunt and Menzel took another giant step in consolidating a spot in our best 22:) Menzel is quickly becoming a player that will begin to get more attention than ever before and Hunt has the time and skills along with the complete footy package to sustain a spot in our backline. Terrific game from both boys tonight and mention to Christensen who looks like he's already played far more than the 2 AFL games so far (Stokesy may have a real battle to keep that position of his)

I feel that with these guys in the mix GWS will be wondering "who do we go for"? Should they try to take established stars like Bartel or Selwood, or go for proven up and comers (oxymoron I know) like Menzel, Hunt, or Duncan?

Hahaha. Our future's so bright we gotta wear shades!

He is nowhere near Stokes level yet.
