Toast Menzel, Hunt, Duncan

Duncan fumbled a lot early but good players lift when the game is on the line and thats what he did. Menzel however was clean and very smart as soon as he came on the ground and must be on the ground from the start from now on, apart from a week off every now and then to keep him fresh.

Menzel, how good is this kid going to be? Just all class. Sharp, tough, skillful and pacy.

Yes, he really was very good today. I have just watched the last quarter very carefully....Duncan and Menzel were superb.

Can anybody let me know why Menzel slipped to pick 17? Was there a question mark over something. Maybe im biased, but i watch him play and think surely he must be a top 2 or 3 pick.

He was actually a mini bolter when we took him in the first round.

Here's Burgatron's phantom draft from 09 for Menzel who he had at #25 (went #17) and Duncan at #26 (went #28).

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/87451/default.aspx

25 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Daniel Menzel
DOB: 13/09/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 77kg
Recruited from: Golden Grove/Central District (SA)
Draft range: 13-29

Menzel has attracted strong interest and is now viewed as a certain top-30 selection, with North lured by his ability to play down back, up forward or on the ball. A proficient user of the ball, Menzel is noted for his rebound, footy smarts, endurance and efficiency - averaging a remarkable 85 per cent at the under-18s. It is understood he won't get past the Brisbane Lions at No.27 and, like Gysberts, could become a Crow or a Cat in the first round.

He actually had Vardy at 16 (went #42) in the phantom draft as well.

Cheers for that. Gee Burga looks to be on the mark with the description. Very happy he is a cat! Gee is Vardy comes good we have spanked the 2009 draft.

Emma Quayle predicted Geelong would take Menzel at #17:

17 GEELONG: DANIEL MENZEL
VITAL INFORMATION: 18, from Central District. 188cm, 79kg. A versatile type who has played midfield and forward and can also set play up with some pinpoint disposal off half-back.
THE RATIONALE: Best player available and an addition to a midfield that will need to gradually start regenerating itself in the next few years. He’s a good kick and a solid decision maker.

Obviously her rationale was spot-on.

Interestingly, she also had Vardy going at #16 to Port. I wonder why he slipped lower?

It was because after the failures of high draft picks such as Tom Valentine (pick 7 - 2006), Marcus Vern (pick 13 - 2008) and David Vaughn (pick 4 - 2004), teams have stopped selecting players with surnames starting with 'V' with their high picks.

I think the draft was light on for rucks and Vardy was one of the few decent ones so dots were wrongly connected with teams needing a ruckman. Plus at the time he would have been seen as undersized for a ruckman, now he has the dimensions of a prototype second ruck with the change in rules.

ps Murray Vance for the win.

I am in love with all 3 of these guys , and get significantly upset whenever they aren't playing ( like Duncan last week ) or are named sub ( like Menzel this week ).

Shite that Thunt is injured. All 3 NEED to play every game we can possibly give em, and only be rested when 100% needed.

ha ha ha. nice work :D

Because they decided (surprisingly) that they had enough ruckmen and tooks Falcons defender Jasper McMillan-Pittard instead. I had him penciled in for #16 or #18 to Melb, which is why I wanted us to take him at 17. As it was, we took Menzel and still got Vardy, WC inexplicably passed on Duncan twice in the 20's, and we got Bundy in the 3rd round too! In a few years, this will be proven to be an absolute gun steal draft for us :):thumbsu:

It's almost as though you have taken the DNA of Stevie J and embarked on a stemcell continuation program.

He was the difference over here, absolute gun.

Agree, that no look handpass just shows the footy smarts he's got. Very SJ like.

Funny, I remember reading a thread on your board when the rising star odds came out and most of your posters thought it was ridiculous that Menzel was on the second line of betting. Fair enough I suppose because he was injured last year and didn't get much exposure, but I remember thinking, by about halfway through the season, you'll all see ;):thumbsu:. He probably won't win it (it'll end up at GC) but he's worth being on the betting list that's for sure.

I see the resemblance - goal smarts like that just can't be taught.

Wouldn't be surprised if we have some mad scientists down there with the way we get kids to come in and make an impact (i.e Selwood, the three musketeers of '11) in an already very strong list.

Before the Freo game on their board one of their mods described Menzel as vanilla. I bit my lip on that. I don't think going on an opposition teams board and arguing with a mod will get you far LOL.

I noticed that too. Thought it was wrong at the time and Menzel went on to show his talent. Felt like bumping the comment but also thought not a great idea on an opposition board.

major wraps on Motlop..he has sensational hands for his size and all the freakish skills of his brother. How the Geelong football club and the recruitment staff are able to snap up these potential superstars is beyond me as teams in the bottom half of the table would have surely had a chance to grab him before us

Motlop is brilliant, has so so so much talent.

That said, he's had a lot of injuries and I'm sure they won't make the same mistake they made with him last year, so don't expect to see him for another few weeks yet.

I wanted to bump it too, but I didn't want to get carded.

Menzel is about as far removed from vanilla as you can possibly get!
