Just watched both parts back to back, and I reckon that's the most inspirational footy story I can remember since Jason McCartney's comeback, following the Bali bombing. Dan's courage and determination to beat the odds are simply amazing, and I'd love to see him make 2016 a year to remember.

I'd also love him to play a blinder against the Crows this week, and play his part in ruining their dreams of a home final :-)

There's been a fair bit written about Schwartz mentoring Menzel over the past few years but the doco gives a much better insight to their relationship than any written article ever did.
Interesting
David Schwarz had his own history of ACL issues, and lives near Geelong on the coast, but it was Wayne Schwass who was on this documentary due to his experience and work with depression.

* Schwass :)
Damn. I always call him Schwartz! And I always spell that wrongly and have to edit it.
Thanks, Lester. Will fix it now.

Schwatta = Wayne Schwass, not David Schwarz

2nd part wasn't quite as impressive.

I feel like the whole thing was only considered pretty recently and they probably didn't actually have enough footage for 2 x 30min episodes.

Anyway, glad they did something though. USA sport is amazing at making these types of short feature films. Check out ESPN 30 for 30 Detroit Bad Boys if you are bored. It's about the Detroit Pistons who won back to back championships sandwiched between Magic Johnson's Lakers dynasty and Michael Jordan's Bulls dynasty in the 90's.

Just finished watching part 2 of this doco. As a north supporter, I had no idea that Schwatta had been involved in Menzel's recovery but I'm so happy that he was able to help Dan deal with the mental side of things and have that conversation with his team mates.

Earlier this year, North did a very short video of Nathan Grima (who, if you've seen any of his work in the media you'll know, is an absolute clown and a hilarious bloke) during his recovery from back surgery and you could see that he was dead set depressed. This video and the fantastic doco on Menzel have really opened my eyes to what these blokes go through when they are trying to recover from not one, but multiple instances of the same injury to get back to the thing that they love to do and the thing that we love to watch them do.

Both men are truly inspirational and while Narni has retired, I will enjoy cheering for Menzel in every game he plays from here on. I truly hope you cats fans get to watch another 200 performances like you saw on Friday night. This kid is something special and he deserves all the success in the world

Did anyone else here Gary Lyon's dribble on the Footy Classified saying not to play him this week? Pretty much the whole argument was on Menzal getting a full preseason into him, Lyon doesn't understand every games precious... is your ACL safer at training? He's already busted one there. Really annoyed me
Lyon had a terrible fracture in his prime. Came back and starred.

He is an A-grade knob but on this one he may actually add value to the discussion.

Thanks Jay-Z
I'm hoping your namesake and Spitter can lead the team very deep in September/October.
Dawson Simpson can truly identify with Nathan Grima, both cruelled by spinal injuries.
What DM has done is utterly brilliant; we'll have to treasure each game we see him play in.
There is no doubt I for one did not believe it was physically/mentaly possible for him to do what he has.

As the great Friedrich Nietzsche said:

"He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how"

What's this? Quoting Nietszche on a footy forum.

Shed a tear watching Part 2 tonight.

Pretty special moment watching him hand the #10 to physio Mark Young after all the work they've done over the years.

Something I was thinking after watching part 1 last night - all the gymnastics style recovery he's done over the last four years, as well as all the time he's spent in the gym... I don't think it's ridiculous to suggest that Daniel Menzel is not only a freakish talent - but now fitter, stronger, and even more agile than a fast majority of AFL players. While the rest of the AFL were going through their regular paces, doing match simulation drills etc. - Menz was in the gym, day after day, pushing every aspect of his body to the absolute limits.

Those knees are gonna hold up, and it'll be like Stevie J never left.

Haven't seen the Dan doco yet but I was literally tearing up when I watched the McCartney game.
